Coequalitisation of the relation between the physician and his patient, which respects the professional dominancy of the first one, has promoted the full guidance before any serious diagnostic or therapeutic intervention. Comparing neuropsychological and psychiatric evaluation of competency in rehabilitation: a case example.

This report describes the case of a 20-year-old man who sustained a gunshot wound to the forehead, resulting in traumatic brain injury and C2 ventilator-dependent quadriplegia. Issues of personal control and autonomy typified his psychological adjustment. The question of competency to refuse medical treatment arose when he disallowed intervention for a suspected ear infection not confirmed by culture. Subsequently, the patient was alternately described as incompetent by a psychiatrist and competent by a medical ethics review panel. These decisions are interpreted within the context of existing

Psychosocial competencies and reasons for living in young adults: implications for suicide prevention from a social determinants of health perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Suicide prevention research has predominantly focused on risk factors, while psychosocial resources that may serve as protective factors have received less attention. From the perspective of social determinants of health, examining such resources may contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of mental health. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between psychosocial competencies and reasons for living among young adults, taking into account selected socio-demographic and family factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between March and June 2025 am

Parallel lives: A phenomenological study of the lived experience of maladaptive daydreaming.

This qualitative study describes the lived experience of maladaptive daydreaming (MD), an excessive form of unwanted daydreaming that produces a rewarding experience based on a created fantasy of a parallel reality associated with a profound sense of presence. A total of 21 in-depth interviews with persons who self-identified as struggling with MD were analyzed utilizing a phenomenological approach. Interviewees described how their natural capacity for vivid daydreaming had developed into a time-consuming habit that resulted in serious dysfunction. The phenomenology of MD was typified by compl

Enhancing Transition to Nursing Practice: The Mental Health Immersion Experience.

The number of people facing mental health issues continues to grow in the aftermath of COVID-19. Nurses are challenged with providing care for an increasing number of patients, including veterans, with complex mental health needs across healthcare settings. Of concern, many students transitioning into practice feel they lack the necessary confidence, education, and skills to competently care for patients with mental health illness. This article discusses an innovative mental health immersion experience strategically integrated within a new-nurse residency program.

Curricular Innovations in Tobacco Cessation Education for Prelicensure Baccalaureate Nursing Students.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is the primary preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, resulting in enormous health care expenditures. The burden of smoking is higher among disadvantaged populations, such as individuals with mental illness. As the largest group of health care providers, nurses must assume a leading role in tobacco control efforts to decrease the deleterious impact on health outcomes. METHOD: Investigators used a randomized control group design to assess the effectiveness of a theory-based tobacco education program on the perceived competence and intrinsic m

Navigating Faith-based Practices in Therapy: Psychotherapists' Experiences in India.

Addressing clients' faith-based practices (FBPs) is indispensable in psychotherapy, especially in a religiously diverse country like India. This can be particularly challenging in contexts where psychotherapy is highly stigmatized and FBPs are culturally accepted. A review of the literature highlighted a gap in research on how psychotherapists negotiate FBPs in the Indian context. This pilot qualitative study aims to address this gap by exploring the experiences of Indian psychotherapists in navigating FBPs as mental health service providers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 I

An Evaluation of co-Delivered Foundational BPD Training With Health Service Staff.

Individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) are frequent users of mental health services and may be perceived negatively by mental health professionals. Educational training has been associated with improved attitudes towards individuals with this diagnosis, but few interventions have been delivered in collaboration with lived experience experts. This study evaluated an educational intervention for mental health professionals that was delivered with lived experience experts. The impact of the training on staff attitudes, namely personal competence, empathy and treatment optimism was

Need for training or already OnTracc? Development and psychometric properties of an online transcultural competence questionnaire among psychotherapists.

The prevalence of mental disorders among people with migration experiences is high. Studies have shown that despite the increasing number of patients from different cultures requiring therapy, treating them is still a major challenge. Furthermore, professional training aimed at improving transcultural competence is rare, and psychometric instruments assessing transcultural competence require improvement. Accordingly, this study aimed to develop and evaluate an online transcultural competence questionnaire (OnTracc) to assess transcultural competence among psychotherapists. Based on extensive l

Peer Mentor Training and Supervision for a Digital Adolescent Depression Treatment in South Africa and Uganda: Mixed Methods Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Blended digital mental health interventions combining technology with human support are more effective than stand-alone treatments. However, limited research has examined how to train and supervise personnel delivering human support components. The Kuamsha app, a gamified digital intervention for adolescent depression based on behavioral activation, was designed to be paired with low-intensity telephone-based peer support. A structured training and supervision program for peer supporters was codeveloped through workshops with mental health professionals and youth with lived experie

The competency-control paradox in parenting adolescents: Evidence from an Indian mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical developmental period during which parenting practices interact with temperament and sociocultural context to shape mental health and adaptation. Most parenting models are derived from Western settings, with limited evidence from India. METHODS: This simultaneous mixed methods study drew on cross sectional data from the Indian Consortium on Vulnerability to Externalizing Disorders and Addictions (cVEDA) cohort, including adolescents aged 12-17 years (parent report n = 931; child report n = 836). Exploratory factor analysis was conducted on parent and child

Non-clinical Psychosocial Mental Health Support Programmes for People with Diverse Language and Cultural Backgrounds: A Critical Rapid Review.

Low accessibility to mainstream psychosocial services disadvantages culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations, resulting in delayed care and high rates of unsupported psychological distress. Non-clinical interventions may play an important role in improving accessibility to psychosocial support, but what characterises best practice in this space remains unclear. This critical rapid review addressed this gap by searching for, and critically analysing, existing research on non-clinical psychosocial support services, drawing from a critical realist framework and Brossard and Chandl

Insight and capacity to consent to electroconvulsive therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To critically examine a recent decision of the Victorian Supreme Court that found that the Mental Health Tribunal and the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal erred in the application of the capacity test in the Mental Health Act 2014 (Vic) and that compulsory electroconvulsive therapy would infringe upon the human rights of two patients who had no insight into their chronic schizophrenia. CONCLUSIONS: After considering the concepts of insight and capacity to consent to treatment, the paper concludes that the decision in NJE and PBU v Mental Health Tribunal [2018] VSC 564 is

Diversion of Mentally Ill Offenders from the Criminal Justice System in Ireland: Comparison with England and Wales.

AIM: It is generally accepted that certain people who are mentally ill and have contact with the criminal justice system should be diverted to psychiatric care rather than imprisoned. We sought to comment on priorities relating to the development of diversion services in Ireland through comparison with developments in a neighbouring jurisdiction. METHODS: A comparative review was undertaken in relation to the provision for psychiatric diversion across the offender pathway in Ireland and England and Wales. This included legal and service related considerations. RESULTS: In both jurisdictions,

[Ethical questions in clinical research with the mentally ill].

The review deals with present problems of protecting mentally ill patients who are incompetent to give informed consent to participating in clinical research, and of assessment of the capacity to consent. 1. Clinical trials of drugs on efficacy and safety in incompetent patients are ethically justified and legally admissible if the investigational drug can be expected to exert a direct potential individual benefit and if such trials will be performed under defined criteria to protect these vulnerable patients. In Germany it is questionable how far these prescriptions of the German Drug Law (AM

Serious Mental Illness and Hospice Care.

There are a small number of articles in the literature discussing palliative and end-of-life care in the SMI population. Most tackle the questions relating to competency to refuse care in end-stage anorexia or terminal medical conditions. This is a case review of a 55 year old patient with a complex psychiatric and medical history, who despite extensive treatment and long hospitalizations has failed to regain any ability to care for her basic needs. She has exhausted all available treatment options and her prognosis is extremely poor. The mental health community is resistant to discussing and/

[Access to electroconvulsive therapy for people lacking decision making capacity and as nonvoluntary treatment : Expert consensus and statement of the German Association for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics (DGPPN)].

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a clinically well-established, evidence-based procedure for the treatment of particularly severe or treatment-resistant psychiatric and neuropsychiatric disorders. A considerable number of patients who require ECT are unable to provide informed consent due to their medical condition. Both international and national studies show that restrictive laws and legal rulings can hinder or even prevent the use of ECT in patients lacking the capacity to provide informed consent or in cases of nonvoluntary treatment (coercive treatment). Patients with indications for EC
