Metacognition and mentalizing are associated with distinct neural representations of decision uncertainty.

Metacognition and mentalizing are both associated with meta-level mental state representations. Conventionally, metacognition refers to monitoring one's own cognitive processes, while mentalizing refers to monitoring others' cognitive processes. However, this self-other dichotomy is insufficient to delineate the 2 high-level mental processes. We here used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to systematically investigate the neural representations of different levels of decision uncertainty in monitoring different targets (the current self, the past self [PS], and others) performing a

Caffeine, mental health, and psychiatric disorders.

Caffeine intake is so common that its pharmacological effects on the mind are undervalued. Since it is so readily available, individuals can adjust their own dose, time of administration and dose intervals of caffeine, according to the perceived benefits and side effects of each dose. This review focuses on human studies of caffeine in subjects with and without psychiatric disorders. Besides the possibility of mild drug dependence, caffeine may bring benefits that contribute to its widespread use. These benefits seem to be related to adaptation of mental energy to the context by increasing ale

Representation, Pattern Information, and Brain Signatures: From Neurons to Neuroimaging.

Human neuroimaging research has transitioned from mapping local effects to developing predictive models of mental events that integrate information distributed across multiple brain systems. Here we review work demonstrating how multivariate predictive models have been utilized to provide quantitative, falsifiable predictions; establish mappings between brain and mind with larger effects than traditional approaches; and help explain how the brain represents mental constructs and processes. Although there is increasing progress toward the first two of these goals, models are only beginning to a

The myth of senility. Diagnosing nonspecific major illness in the elderly.

In the elderly, physical and mental concemitants of chronic and explainable ill health are often masked by the diagnosis of senility. The presentation of major illness in the elderly is commonly nonspecific, and a full physical examination and tests with special attention to infections and to the signs of endocrine and metabolic disorders should be carried out. Symptoms such as confusion and memory loss, hostile or difficult behavior, and dementia point to different probable causes, and the physician should carefully search for the underlying pathology.

Comparing cognitive fusion and cognitive reappraisal as predictors of college student mental health.

Transdiagnostic cognitive behavioral interventions target different cognitive processes to promote mental health, including cognitive fusion and cognitive reappraisal. Determining the relative impact of cognitive fusion and reappraisal on a range of student mental health concerns could help interventions target psychopathological cognitive processes more effectively. Therefore, this study examined the longitudinal impact of cognitive fusion and reappraisal on mental health and functioning outcomes. A series of hierarchical regression models tested the effects of cognitive fusion and reappraisa

Advancing Proficiencies for Health Professionals in the Treatment of Tobacco Use Among Marginalized Communities: Development of a Competency-Based Curriculum and Virtual Workshop.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco-related disparities are a leading contributor to health inequities among marginalized communities. Lack of support from health professionals is one of the most cited barriers to tobacco cessation reported by these communities. Improving the proficiencies with which health professionals incorporate social and cultural influences into therapeutic interactions has the potential to address this critical barrier. In general, training to improve these proficiencies has shown promise, but the specific proficiencies required for treating tobacco use among marginalized communities a

When the loss of positives feels negative: Exploring the loss of positive experiences in committed couples.

Despite romantic relationships being characterized by high positives (e.g., enjoyable activities, positive feelings) early in commitment, many couples experience a loss of positives over time. However, interventions are typically not as effective at enhancing positives as they are at reducing negatives (e.g., hostile conflict). Thus, it is important to understand why positives decrease and how to use interventions to enhance positives optimally. In this article, we present how the field has evolved to (a) heighten focus on positives independent of negatives, (b) identify trajectories of positi

Primum non nocere or primum facere meliorem? Hacking the brain in the 21st century.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that modulates cortical excitability. It is devoid of serious adverse events and exerts variable effects on cognition, with several research findings suggesting that it can improve memory, verbal and mathematical skills. Because tDCS devices are low-cost, portable and relatively easy to assemble, they have become available outside of the medical setting and used for non-medical ("cosmetic") purposes by laypersons. In this sense, tDCS has become a popular technique aiming to improve cognition and the ac

Auditory, tactile, and audiotactile information processing following visual deprivation.

We highlight the results of those studies that have investigated the plastic reorganization processes that occur within the human brain as a consequence of visual deprivation, as well as how these processes give rise to behaviorally observable changes in the perceptual processing of auditory and tactile information. We review the evidence showing that visual deprivation affects the establishment of the spatial coordinate systems involved in the processing of auditory and tactile inputs within the peripersonal space around an individual. In blind individuals, the absence of a conjoint activatio

[Morphologic and molecular neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease].

Alzheimer disease lesions include the abnormal accumulation of two proteins normally present in neurons: tau protein and Abeta peptide. Tau protein aggregates into fibrils in the cell body of neurons (neurofibrillary tangles), in dendrites (neuropil threads) and in degenerating axons that constitute the corona of the senile plaque. Tau pathology progresses in the brain areas in a stereotyped manner and in parallel with the clinical symptoms. Abeta extracellular deposits may be diffuse or focal. The Abeta focal deposit constitutes the core of the senile plaque. Progression of the Abeta lesions,

Management of anomia.

Anomia is a complex, commonly occurring symptom of aphasia with different underlying causes. A number of behavioral approaches to rehabilitation of anomia have been described. Some are restitutive in nature and attempt to reactivate lexical-semantic or phonological representations to improve word retrieval. Others are intended to reorganize language functions by engaging alternative cognitive systems to mediate word retrieval or by exploiting residual abilities to circumvent the impairment. A better appreciation of the characteristics of an individual's naming deficit may assist the clinician

Psychophysiology by the end of the 20th century.

The first real breakthrough in the research of brain organization and thinking in the 20th century was made in neurophysiological investigations performed in direct contact with different sites of the brain, which became possible in diagnosis and treatment. The second breakthrough is happening at present. It is based on the opportunities provided by the non-invasive technique. The theory of the unique character of the brain system consisting of rigid and flexible elements maintaining thinking was created as well as concepts on the reliability in the system, of the error detector and intrinsic

Neurocognitive networks and selectively distributed processing.

The association cortex of the human brain can be divided into unimodal and transmodal components. Unimodal (modality-specific) cortical areas are subdivided into upstream regions specialized for encoding unitary features of experience and downstream regions which are specialized for encoding composite features. Modality-specific features lead to multimodal knowledge through the mediation of transmodal areas in the brain. These transmodal areas include cortical regions that are conventionally designated as heteromodal, paralimbic and limbic cortex. Contrary to earlier formulations, it is no lon

Neurophysiological mechanisms of implicit and explicit memory in the process of consciousness.

Neurophysiological mechanisms are increasingly understood to constitute the foundations of human conscious experience. These include the capacity for ongoing memory, achieved through a hierarchy of reentrant cross-laminar connections across limbic, heteromodal, unimodal, and primary cortices. The neurophysiological mechanisms of consciousness also include the capacity for volitional direction of attention to the ongoing cognitive process, through a reentrant fronto-thalamo-cortical network regulation of the inhibitory thalamic reticular nucleus. More elusive is the way that discrete objects of

Profile of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease.

Cognitive impairment (CI) is a common nonmotor complication of Parkinson's disease (PD), and is associated with significant disability for patients and burden for caregivers. Similar to motor symptoms, the characteristics of CI in PD can be quite variable, both in terms of what cognitive domains are impaired, and the timing of onset and rate of progression. This review will examine the profile of cognitive domain impairments observed in PD, with a focus on early CI (without dementia). We will also discuss possible relationships between specific cognitive domain impairments in PD and pathologic

Heuristic and analytic processes in propositional reasoning with negatives.

The authors report 4 studies on heuristic and analytic processes in conditional reasoning with negations and show that a heuristic negative conclusion bias cannot account for the effects observed on problem-solving latencies derived from eye-movement measures (Experiment 1) and a novel mouse-tracking methodology (Experiment 2). A double negation elimination process can account for both the latency and response-frequency effects of a negation in the clause about which an inference is made. It is further shown that other negation effects cannot be explained by an affirmative premise bias propose

Co-production of accessible digital mental health supports with marginalised young people: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While some digital supports aid in improving young people's mental health, there is a dearth of information regarding the most effective ways to involve young people in the co-production of digital technologies. User input is essential, particularly for marginalised young people who are often excluded. The aim of this scoping review was to examine recent literature on the most common co-production processes of digital mental health supports with marginalised young people. METHOD: A scoping review was conducted to identify literature published since 2021, written in Englis

Evaluation and Restoration of Competence to Stand Trial: Intercepting the Forensic System Using the Sequential Intercept Model.

The sequential intercept model (SIM) is used to reduce the penetration of persons with mental illness and substance use disorders in the criminal legal system. Its framework recommends identifying individuals with mental illness at various decision points of criminal case processing, from arrest to return from incarceration, so that they can be diverted toward treatment rather than permeate deeper into the criminal justice system. Communities frequently use the model to augment and inform jail diversion services. Despite the model's widespread adoption, individuals with serious mental illness,
