Mercury and methylmercury concentrations, sources and distribution in submarine canyon sediments (Capbreton, SW France): Implications for the net methylmercury production.

Submarine canyons are important stocks of commercial interest fish, whose consumption is one of the main monomethymercury (MeHg) exposure to humans. Currently, biogeochemistry of mercury in those biologically productive system is unknown. In this work, inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) and organic mercury (MeHg) distributions were measured in sedimentary accumulative zones (slopes and terraces) against adjacent continental shelf sediments. Hg compound concentrations in these sediments show a huge range of concentrations (Hg(II) ranging from 18 to 973 ng g-1 and MeHg ranging from 0.07 to 2.03 ng g-1)

Environmental impacts of the Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston coal ash spill. 2. Effect of coal ash on methylmercury in historically contaminated river sediments.

The Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston coal ash spill in December 2008 deposited approximately 4.1 million m(3) of fly ash and bottom ash into the Emory and Clinch River system (Harriman, Tennessee, U.S.A.). The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of the ash on surface water and sediment quality over an eighteen month period after the spill, with a specific focus on mercury and methylmercury in sediments. Our results indicated that surface water quality was not impaired with respect to total mercury concentrations. However, in the sediments of the Emory River near the coal a

Mercury bioaccumulation and biomagnification in southern hemisphere riverine food webs: Environmental drivers across a 3,700 km Chilean latitudinal gradient.

Mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in freshwater food webs is a worldwide concern, commonly interpreted through broad geographic gradients derived largely from Northern Hemisphere datasets, yet controls on dynamics in Southern Hemisphere rivers remain poorly resolved. Our multi-basin, multi-matrix investigation of total mercury (THg) and MeHg across a ∼3700 km Chilean latitudinal gradient using integrated abiotic (water, sediments) and biotic (benthic macroinvertebrates, trout) matrices and stable isotopes (δ13C, δ15N), alongside environmental and land use variables. Sediment THg ranged fro

Factors affecting enhanced mercury bioaccumulation in inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park, USA.

We investigated factors causing mercury (Hg) concentrations in northern pike to exceed the consumption advisory level (>500 ng/g) in some inland lakes of Isle Royale National Park. Using Hg-clean techniques, we collected water, zooplankton, macro invertebrates, and fishes in 1998 and 1999 from one advisory lake, Sargent Lake, for analysis of total mercury (Hg(T)) and methylmercury (MeHg). For comparison, samples were also collected from a non-advisory lake, Lake Richie. Concentrations of Hg(T) in northern pike were significantly higher in Sargent Lake (P<0.01). Counter to expectations, mean co

Infrared spectrum of Hg(OH)2 in solid neon and argon.

Mercury(II) hydroxide molecules have been prepared upon mercury arc lamp irradiation of Hg, H(2), and O(2) mixtures in solid neon and argon. The strongest three infrared absorptions are identified through isotopic substitution (D(2), HD, (18)O(2), (16)O(18)O) and comparison to frequencies from DFT calculations. The isolated Hg(OH)(2) molecule is stable and has a linear O-Hg-O linkage in a C(2) structure with an 86 degrees dihedral angle. However, in aqueous solution Hg(2+) and 2OH(-) may form an Hg(OH)(2) intermediate, which eliminates water and precipitates solid HgO: The solid Hg(OH)(2) comp

Application of isotopically labeled methylmercury for isotope dilution analysis of biological samples using gas chromatography/ICPMS.

An isotope dilution (ID) procedure for the determination of methylmercury (MMHg) in biological samples using an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer as detector after the capillary gas chromatographic separation (CGC/ICPMS) has been developed. For the first time, open-focused-microwave pretreatment has been used in conjunction with ID. Optimum conditions for the measurement of isotope ratios on the fast transient chromatographic peaks have been established. Mass bias was found to be about 1.5%/mass unit and was corrected by using the simultaneously measured thallium signals at 203Tl an

Mercury biomagnification in marine zooplankton food webs in Hudson Bay.

While much research has been carried out on mercury in large marine mammals and associated food webs in northern regions, comparatively less has been conducted on lower trophic levels including zooplankton and the subsequent transfer to predators, which marks the entry of mercury into northern marine food webs. We present here the first database for mercury uptake and transfer exclusively within zooplankton food webs in northern marine waters. We have investigated both total (THg) and monomethylmercury (MMHg) concentrations, and isotopic signatures (δ(15)N and δ(13)C) in individual zooplankton

Transformations of aquatic mercury species by the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana.

Phytoplankton are traditionally viewed as simple bioaccumulators and key entry points for mercury (Hg) into aquatic trophic chain. However the more recent findings suggest that they can function as dynamic biological systems capable of enhancing Hg cycling reactivity and altering its speciation. Nevertheless, the role of phytoplankton species in mercury transformations remains largely overlooked. The present study examined inorganic mercury (Hg(II)) methylation, monomethylmercury (MeHg) demethylation, and the production of dissolved gaseous mercury (Hg(0)) following exposure to sub-nanomolar c

Multi-element detection of organometals by supercritical fluid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric detection.

Organometal compounds of arsenic, antimony, and mercury are speciated using supercritical fluid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometric (ICP-MS) detection. The multi-element capability of ICP-MS for transient signals is examined by detecting five compounds containing all three elements in a single chromatographic injection. The results obtained are compared with those obtained from flame-ionization detection (FID). Trimethyl arsine is not distinguished from the solvent peak when FID is used because it coelutes with the solvent, whereas trimethyl arsine is detected whe

Overlooked role of soil microbial-derived carbon in promoting neurotoxic methylmercury production.

The bioaccumulation of neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in rice has raised global concerns due to its potential threat to human health. Organic carbon is a crucial factor influencing MeHg production in soils, as it regulates mercury bioavailability and microbial activity. However, the role of microbial-derived carbon, a critical source of soil organic matter, in regulating MeHg production remains unclear. Here, we compared the effect of microbial necromass (i.e., Gram-negative bacteria, Gram-positive bacteria, and fungi) and plant residues on microbial mercury methylation during incubation of p

Contrasting Spatial and Seasonal Trends of Methylmercury Exposure Pathways of Arctic Seabirds: Combination of Large-Scale Tracking and Stable Isotopic Approaches.

Despite the limited direct anthropogenic mercury (Hg) inputs in the circumpolar Arctic, elevated concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) are accumulated in Arctic marine biota. However, the MeHg production and bioaccumulation pathways in these ecosystems have not been completely unraveled. We measured Hg concentrations and stable isotope ratios of Hg, carbon, and nitrogen in the feathers and blood of geolocator-tracked little auk Alle alle from five Arctic breeding colonies. The wide-range spatial mobility and tissue-specific Hg integration times of this planktivorous seabird allowed the explor

Utility of Diffusive Gradient in Thin-Film Passive Samplers for Predicting Mercury Methylation Potential and Bioaccumulation in Freshwater Wetlands.

Mercury is a risk in aquatic ecosystems when the metal is converted to methylmercury (MeHg) and subsequently bioaccumulates in aquatic food webs. This risk can be difficult to manage because of the complexity of biogeochemical processes for mercury and the need for accessible techniques to navigate this complexity. Here, we explored the use of diffusive gradient in thin-film (DGT) passive samplers as a tool to simultaneously quantify the methylation potential of inorganic Hg (IHg) and the bioaccumulation potential of MeHg in freshwater wetlands. Outdoor freshwater wetland mesocosms were amende

First Retrospective Study of Avian Mercury Exposure in a Tropical ASGM Hotspot.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest anthropogenic source of mercury globally. Few studies have explored how this toxicant affects avian wildlife in Indonesia, an ASGM hotspot. Here, we use feather samples from museum specimens (n = 92) of Indonesian birds to examine changes through time in methylmercury (MeHg), diet, and foraging habitat (inferred from stable isotope ratios of nitrogen, δ15N, and carbon, δ13C, respectively). We ask how MeHg changes between time period (1860-1980 vs. 1980-2019) given increases in mercury emissions due to ASGM and describe how foraging gu

Terrestrial mercury and methylmercury bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in subtropical urban forest food webs.

As the "lungs of the city", urban forests can improve air quality by absorbing air pollutants, becoming hotspots for mercury (Hg) pollution from anthropogenic activities. However, the bioaccumulation and transfer of Hg in the urban forest food web are unclear. In this study, total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations, as well as the stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) in organisms with different trophic levels (TLs) were investigated in a mid-subtropical urban forest of the Changpoling Forest Park (CFP) in Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, southwestern China. Comparison of methods with respect to efficiencies, recoveries, and quantitation of mercury species interconversions in food demonstrated using tuna fish.

Eight different analytical extraction procedures commonly used to extract mercury species from biological samples were evaluated by analyzing Tuna Fish Tissue Certified Reference Material (ERM-CE464) certified for the content of total mercury and methylmercury. Speciated isotope dilution mass spectrometry (SIDMS; US Environmental Protection Agency's method 6800) was utilized to evaluate and effectively compensate for potential errors during measurement and accurately quantify mercury species using all the extraction methods. SIDMS was used to accurately evaluate species transformations during

Distinct demethylation pathways of rice- and fish-derived methylmercury in pregnant women revealed by compound-specific isotope analysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Understanding mercury (Hg) metabolism and exposure pathways in pregnant women is essential for protecting fetal health. However, most previous studies have relied primarily on Hg concentrations in single biomarkers, limiting insight into in vivo metabolic differences and maternal-fetal transfer, especially regarding source-specific MeHg metabolism. This study applies compound-specific stable isotope analysis to investigate total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations and isotopic signatures in rice and maternal biomarkers from the Wanshan Hg mining area, China. Even after remediation

In situ ethylation of organolead, organotin and organomercury species by bromomagnesium tetraethylborate prior to GC-ICP-MS analysis.

An analytical method for simultaneous in situ ethylation, of organolead, organotin and organomercury compounds in aqueous samples was developed using a new derivatisation agent, bromomagnesium tetraethylborate (BrMgEt(4)B). The determination of lead, tin and mercury compounds was done by species-specific isotope dilution, derivatisation and GC-inductively coupled plasma MS (GC-ICP-MS) or by GC-MS. The recovery and accuracy of the derivatisation were evaluated. The effect of pH and the relative quantity of derivatisation agent were studied.

Methyltransferase: an enzyme assay for microbial methylmercury formation in acidic soils and sediments.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is a highly toxic form of mercury that bioaccumulates in aquatic food chains. However, methods to reliably identify sites of MeHg formation or to quantify MeHg production require the use of isotopic tracers, which limits their use. In this paper, a method is presented to quantify the methylation of mercury by a methyltransferase pathway. This methyltransferase pathway is one of the biochemical pathways responsible for biological mercury methylation. Protein is extracted from environmental samples, and mercury methyltransferase (HgMT) activity of soil extracts is calculated

Isotope dilution SPME GC/MS for the determination of methylmercury in tuna fish samples.

The development of a rapid, precise and accurate analytical method for the determination of methylmercury in tuna fish samples is described. The method is based on the use of isotope dilution GC/MS with electron impact ionization, a widespread technique in routine testing laboratories. A certified spike containing (202)Hg-enriched methylmercury was used for the isotope dilution of the samples. After extraction of the methylmercury from the sample, methylmercury was propylated using sodium tetrapropyl borate in SPME vials and the analytes were sampled from the headspace for 15 min. For isotope
