The incubation of Allium cepa L. roots in Pb(NO3)2, Cd(NO3)(2)x4H2O or Cr(NO3)(3)x9H2O solution at the concentration of 100 microM lowered the mitotic index (MI) value in meristem by 58%, 39%, 48%, respectively. The proportion of mitotic phases (mainly prophases and telophases) in MI value was also changed. Moreover, mitotic disturbances such as: c-metaphases, sticky and lagging chromosomes, chromosome bridges, binucleate cells, micronuclei, "budding" nuclei and nucleoli partly outside nuclei were induced in the presence of the tested heavy metals, most frequently after Pb treatment. Pre-incub

The rampant use of pesticides can cause serious environmental problems. They can be contaminating surface water and groundwater, affecting the surrounding micro and macro biota. In this sense, this work aimed to evaluate the effects of a tebuconazole-based fungicide through endpoints accessed in Lactuca sativa bioassays. Germinated-seeds with roots upon 2 mm were treated with a fungicide containing Tebuconazole (TBZ) as active compound. The final concentration of TBZ in the tested solutions were 0.025 (C1); 0.05 (C2); 0.1 (C3); 0.2 (C4) and 0.4 g/L (C5). L. sativa roots were exposed for 24 h t

PREMISE: As the sister clade to angiosperms, extant gymnosperms are crucial for reconstructing ancestral gene regulatory networks in seed plants. This highlights the need for model systems representing each of their distinct lineages. However, tools to quickly and effectively investigate gene function in gymnosperms are still limited due to the challenges of long life cycles and large genome sizes. Species within the xerophytic genus Ephedra (Gnetales) have comparatively smaller genomes and shrubby growth habits with shorter life spans, making them better suited for greenhouse cultivation and

The plant hormone auxin plays a critical role in regulating various aspects of plant growth and development, and the spatial accumulation of auxin within organs, which is primarily attributable to local auxin biosynthesis and polar transport, is largely responsible for lateral organ morphogenesis and the establishment of plant architecture. Here, we show that three Arabidopsis INDETERMINATE DOMAIN (IDD) transcription factors, IDD14, IDD15, and IDD16, cooperatively regulate auxin biosynthesis and transport and thus aerial organ morphogenesis and gravitropic responses. Gain-of-function of each I

The natural rubber industry consumes large volumes of water and annually releases wastewater with rich organic and inorganic loads. This wastewater is allowed for soil irrigation in developing countries. However, the pollutant composition in wastewater and its environmental effects remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to assess the wastewater's physicochemical parameters, toxic organic pollutants, heavy metals, and phytotoxic and cytogenotoxic. The result revealed that values of comprehensive wastewater parameters were recorded as chemical oxygen demand (187432.1 mg/L), pH (4.23), total nitroge

Mounting evidence from genomic and transcriptomic studies suggests that most genetic networks regulating the morphogenesis of land plant sporophytes were co-opted and modified from those already present in streptophyte algae and gametophytes of bryophytes sensu lato. However, thus far, no candidate genes have been identified that could be responsible for "planation", a conversion from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional growth pattern. According to the telome theory, "planation" was required for the genesis of the leaf blade in the course of leaf evolution. The key transcription factors r

The MIR396 family, composed of ath-miR396a and ath-miR396b in Arabidopsis, is conserved among plant species and is known to target the Growth-Regulating Factor (GRF) gene family. ath-miR396 overexpressors or grf mutants are characterised by small and narrow leaves and show embryogenic defects such as cotyledon fusion. Heterologous expression of ath-miR396a has been reported in tobacco and resulted in reduction of the expression of three NtGRF genes. In this study, the precursor of the Populus trichocarpa ptc-miR396c, with a mature sequence identical to ath-miR396b, was expressed under control

Plant lineage has traditionally constrained grafting compatibility, with monocots generally considered incompatible because of their dispersed vascular bundles and limited secondary growth. Recent studies have shown that embryonic grafting can establish successful graft unions in selected monocot systems by exploiting early developmental plasticity before anatomical constraints become fully established. Experimental evidence from cereals and orchids has demonstrated callus adhesion, vascular reconnection, and early tissue integration under controlled conditions, indicating that embryonic graft

Based on our previous finding that polysaccharide peptide (PSP) has substantial antiviral activity, we cultured strawberry plants infected with strawberry mild yellow edge virus (SMYEV) or strawberry vein banding virus (SVBV) in Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with PSP to test its ability to eliminate these viruses. PSP not only improved the elimination of SMYEV and SVBV but also promoted the growth and rooting of strawberry plants in tissue culture. On the 45th day, the average height of the 'Ningyu' strawberry plants in the 1-mg/ml PSP treatment group was 1.91 cm, whereas that of

BACKGROUND: miRNAs are a type of conserved, small RNA molecule that regulate gene expression and play an important role in the growth and development of plants. miRNAs are involved in seed germination, root development, shoot apical meristem maintenance, leaf development, and flower development by regulating various target genes. However, the role of miRNAs in the mechanism of tea plant flower sterility remains unclear. Therefore, we performed miRNA sequencing on the flowers of fertile male parents, female parents, and sterile offspring.
RESULTS: A total of 55 known miRNAs and 90 unknown miRN

A total of 231 different soil Streptomyces isolates were recovered from 16 different locations in North Jordan. They were assessed for their phytotoxic activity on seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) placed adjacent to a 2 cm wide Streptomyces culture strips grown at 28C degrees for 3 weeks on starch casein nitrate (SCN) agar. Phytotoxicity was ascertained on the basis of suppressed seed germination, discoloration of the root tip, reduced root and the shoot growth and eventual death of the root. Twenty one of the isolates exhibited adverse effect against gro

Plants rarely encounter environmental stress as a single, steady stimulus. Heat, drought, high evaporative demand, excess light, nutrient limitation, mechanical damage and infection often overlap, creating compound conditions that require rapid coordination among leaves, roots, vascular tissues and meristems. This review develops a mechanistic framework for rapid whole-plant stress signalling under compound environmental stresses. We propose that acclimation depends on a multi-speed signalling architecture in which reactive oxygen species, Ca2+, electrical and hydraulic waves transmit fast sys

Cytogenetic information remains limited for many rare and geographically restricted species of Zingiber in Thailand. This study investigated chromosome numbers, karyotype characteristics, centromeric-index and relative chromosome-length variation, and karyotype asymmetry in Z. brachystachys, Z. gramineum, Z. mekongense, Z. pellitum, and Z. pyroglossum. Somatic chromosomes were examined from root-tip meristems using the aceto-orcein squash technique, followed by quantitative karyotype analysis, principal component analysis (PCA), UPGMA clustering, and Stebbins asymmetry classification. All five

While carpels in Orchidaceae are predominantly unilocular, trilocular carpels can also occur, mainly in branches separated during the early diversification of the family. Variation in septa structure in the trilocular ovaries of the anthetic flower of orchids suggests distinct ontogenetic processes. In general, Orchidaceae fruits are capsules dehiscent by longitudinal slits, however, the number of valves, the pericarp composition, and the form of dehiscence can vary. To date, little is known about the development of unilocular capsules in Orchidaceae, and even less is understood about the deve

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a plant of South American origin recently valorized for its nutritional and nutraceutical properties in human diet. Quinoa is cultivated in many parts of the world, with a selection of varieties with good adaptability to extreme climatic conditions and salt stress. The variety Red Faro, native to southern Chile but harvested in Tunisia, was considered for salt stress resistance, considering its seed germination and 10-day seedling growth at increasing doses of NaCl (0, 100, 200 and 300 mM). Seedlings were spectrophotometrically analyzed for antioxidant sec

Stevia is a herbaceous plant containing non-sugar sweeteners that could be regarded as a successor to sugar for diabetics. However, there are some problems with the cultivation of stevia, especially in the greenhouse, including unbranching and low sweetening agents. To overcome this issue, an experiment was designed to increase not only the branching and leaf production but also the sweetness. Therefore, a novel strategy using abscisic acid (0, 50, 100, 150 μM), its inhibitor, i.e. fluridone (0, 50, 100, 150 μM) and decapitation of plant apical meristems was applied. Results showed that when s

The presence of antibiotics in soils could be due to natural production by soil microorganisms or to the effect of anthropogenic activities. However, the impact of these compounds on plant physiology has not been thoroughly investigated. To evaluate the effect of β-lactam antibiotics (carbenicillin and penicillin) on the growth and development of Arabidopsis thaliana roots, plants were grown in the presence of different amounts and we found a reduction in root size, an increase in the size of root hairs as well as an abnormal position closer to the tip of the roots. Those phenomena were depend

Dynamin-related proteins (DRPs) are large GTPases involved in a wide range of cellular membrane remodeling processes. In Arabidopsis thaliana, two paralogous land plant-specific type DRPs, DRP2A and DRP2B, are thought to participate in the regulation of post-Golgi trafficking. Here, we examined their molecular properties and functional relationships. qRT-PCR and GUS assays showed that DRP2A and DRP2B were expressed ubiquitously, although their expressions were strongest around root apical meristems and vascular bundles. Yeast two-hybrid, bi-molecular fluorescent complementation, and co-immunop

Cold deacclimation and preparation to flushing likely requires rehydration of meristems. Therefore, water stress related genes, such as dehydrins (DHN), might play an important role in providing protection during winter dormancy, deacclimation and bud burst timing processes. Here we report the sequence analysis of several Norway spruce DHN identified in late and early flushing suppressive subtraction hybridization cDNA libraries and in our Norway spruce EST database. We obtained 15 cDNAs, representing eight genes from three distinct types of DHN, and studied differential expression of these ge

A number of features of the gravitropic response of roots are not readily accounted for by the classical Cholodny-Went theory. These include the observations that (i) in the later stages of the response the growth gradient is reversed with no evident reversal of the auxin gradient; (ii) a major component of the acceleration of growth along the upper side occurs in the distal elongation zone (DEZ), a group of cells located between the meristem and the main elongation, not within the central elongation zone; and (iii) the initiation of differential growth in the DEZ appears to be independent of
