Mesenteric cystic lymphangioma mimicking malignancy.

Mesenteric cystic lymphangiomas are benign tumours arising from the mesentery, and have no known aetiology. Patients might be discovered incidentally to have asymptomatic mesenteric cysts, or they can present with symptoms such as pain, nausea and vomiting. A 27-year-old man presented with vague abdominal pain, loss of appetite, postprandial fullness and significant weight loss. There was no lymphadenopathy, and abdominal examination was unremarkable. CT showed a mesenteric mass and a diagnosis of abdominal lymphoma was suggested. There was no evidence of pulmonary tuberculosis on chest X-ray

[Partial jejunal volvulus due to a mesenteric cystic lymphangioma].

Mesenteric cysts are unusual benign tumours that include lymphangioma. Their clinical presentation is variable and acute symptoms can be produced due to complications. This tumour appears especially in childhood, and its prognosis after surgical removal is excellent. We present the case of a 15 year old female patient with symptoms of postprandial abdominal pain and palpation of smooth mass in hypogastrium. Radiological studies showed a big polilobular mass of cystic substance that included a portion of jejune with incomplete volvulus. The treatment was the removal of the cyst and a jejunal po

[Intestinal duplication in the adult. A case report of colonic duplication and a review of the literature].

Alimentary tract duplications are uncommon congenital anomalies that are usually present during the first decade of life. However, a smaller number of cases may remain unsuspected until adulthood. They are most common in the ileum but can occur anywhere along the alimentary tract. Duplications may be cystic or tubular in appearance and characteristically arise from the mesenteric aspect of the intestine. Abdominal pain, nausea and/or vomiting, palpable mass, weight loss, and bleeding are the most common symptoms. This paper reports the case of a 24-year-old male with a cystic duplication of th

A giant peritoneal simple mesothelial cyst: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: A peritoneal simple mesothelial cyst is a very rare mesenteric cyst of mesothelial origin. The size of this lesion usually ranges between a few centimeters and 10 cm. It is usually asymptomatic, but occasionally presents with various, non-specific symptoms, which makes correct pre-operative diagnosis difficult. We present a case of a giant peritoneal simple mesothelial cyst that was successfully managed by complete surgical excision which is the treatment of choice. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old Caucasian Moroccan woman with vague abdominal discomfort and associated distentio

Pathological characterization of hepatic and mesenteric neotropical Echinococcosis in Brazilian Amazonian patients using light and scanning electron microscopy.

Neotropical Echinococcosis (NE) is an emerging parasitic zoonosis of significant public health concern. The disease is caused by the larval stage (metacestodes) of Echinococcus vogeli and affects humans in tropical forests of Central and South America. While clinical presentation, radiological imaging, and surgical procedures have been investigated, the pathological features of NE remain partially understood. We performed a comparative study of hepatic and mesenteric metacestodes obtained from Brazilian patients in Acre and Amazonas States during surgical procedures, using both light and scann

Unusual site and uncommon presentation of epidermoid cyst: a rare case report and review of literature.

Epidermoid cyst of gastrointestinal tract is very rare, and only a few cases of epidermoid cyst of the caecum have been reported in the literature. We report the first case of epidermoid cyst of the caecum in an elderly man, mimicking mesenteric cyst clinically. It was treated by laparoscopic excision of the cyst. The cyst was spherical, extending from and expanding the serosal surface of the caecum with no communication through the muscularis wall. Histologically, the inner lining of the cyst was composed of benign, mature, keratinised and stratified squamous epithelium with a well-formed gra

Acquired ileal atresia induced by adhesive intestinal obstruction.

Three female infants, aged 13, 7 and 18 mo respectively with acquired ileal atresia induced by adhesive small bowel obstruction are reported. Case 1 was diagnosed with urachal cyst and cyst excision was performed when she was 7-mo-old. Case 2 was diagnosed with mesenteric cyst and cyst excision was performed by laparoscopic-assisted procedure when she was 3-mo-old. Case 3 had no history of abdominal operation previously. At laparotomy ileal atresia induced by adhesive band was found.

First toddler mesenteric lymphatic malformation in Malaysia - A case report.

This is the first reported case of a mesenteric lymphatic malformation in a toddler in Malaysia. It is a rare benign condition with incidence of 1 in 250,000 populations. Our patient presented to us at 2 years 11months old complaining of abdominal distension for 6 months without obstructive symptoms. Clinically there was a vague soft central abdominal mass. CT abdomen done revealed a large multiloculated intraperitoneal mesentery cystic mass within the central abdomen extending to pelvis. A semi-emergency laparotomy was performed. Intra-operatively the multiloculated mesenteric cyst measured 2

Giant megalo-ureter and duplex kidney in an asymptomatic adult.

An abdominal mass was palpated in an asymptomatic adult during a routine medical check-up. Ultrasonography and computed tomography scan diagnosed a simple renal cyst, a mesenteric cyst and a seminal vesicle cyst. At laparotomy a complete ureteral duplication and a giant ectopic megalo-ureter were diagnosed. Other complications were ruled out in the follow-up. Ureterectomy without heminephrectomy was performed and the patient remains asymptomatic 5 years after surgery.

Primary mesenteric lymphangioma in a young adult with intestinal malrotation and 'counter-clockwise barber pole sign'.

Mesenteric lymphangiomas are uncommon benign lesions that usually occur in isolation but rarely may be associated with gastrointestinal (GI) malrotation. Malrotation may cause chronic and recurrent volvulus leading to chronic venous congestion and lymphatic engorgement. Interference with lymphatic drainage may result in formation of a lymphangioma or a chylous mesenteric cyst. In our case, mesenteric lymphangioma was present with partial malrotation of small and large bowel. There was no radiological and surgical evidence of volvulus, favouring the hypothesis that lymphangioma may be a primary

Mesenteric lipodystrophy.

Three cases of mesenteric lipodystrophy with a wide range of clinicopathological features are reported. Mesenteric lipodystrophy may present as an acute abdomen or with non-specific upper abdominal symptoms. Routine biochemical and haematological investigations are within normal limits. Histological examination shows lipid-filled macrophages in sheets and bands with focal cyst formation. Mesenteric lipodystrophy is a rare condition. A firm diagnosis can be reached only by histological examination and a number of conditions need to be considered in the differential diagnosis.

[Infected jejunal mesenteric pseudocyst: A case report].

BACKGROUND: Mesenteric cysts are very rare abdominal growths, generally asymptomatic, and which are usually detected incidentally while performing a physical examination or an imaging test. Complications such as infections, haemorrhage, torsion, rupture, or bowel obstruction, are seldom found in this pathology, but they can be a cause of acute abdomen. The purpose of this report is to describe the characteristics and the clinical outcome of a male patient with an infected mesenteric pseudocyst of the jejunum. CLINICAL CASE: A 49 year-old male was admitted to the emergency department with 6-da

Prenatal detection of a congenital pancreatic cyst by ultrasound.

We present a case of a fetal pancreatic cyst, a rare disease in fetal life, detected prenatally at 30 weeks' gestation by ultrasound. Routine ultrasound examination at 30 weeks' gestation by primary obstetrician showed a cyst on the fetal abdomen. Initially, the suspected diagnosis was a mesenteric cyst. Subsequent ultrasound examination at weeks 32, 36 showed a fetal retroperitoneal cyst. A 3.6 kg female neonate was born to 23 yr old woman by spontaneous vaginal delivery at 38 weeks' gestation. The fetus underwent exploratory laparotomy. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical diagnosis revea

Ileal duplication cyst linked to type 3A ileal atresia: a rare case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Jejuno-ileal atresias represent a significant cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction, occurring in approximately 1 in 3000-5000 live births. Terminal ileal atresia, classified as type 3A according to the Louw and Barnard system, specifically involves a mesenteric defect. Ileal duplication cysts, typically cystic or tubular structures sharing a common muscular wall and blood supply with the native ileum, can be communicating or non-communicating and pose risks of obstruction, volvulus, bleeding, or perforation. This case highlights terminal ileal atresia (type 3A) concurrent with

Enteropathy-associated intestinal T-cell lymphoma in cavitating mesenteric lymph node syndrome: fine-needle aspiration contributes to the diagnosis.

Cavitating mesenteric lymph node syndrome (CMLNS) is an infrequently reported manifestation of unrecognized/longstanding celiac disease and may be associated with enteropathy-associated intestinal T-cell lymphoma and hyposplenism. Unrecognized malignancy and life-threatening infections can pose a significant risk to patients in cases of delayed diagnosis. Fine-needle aspiration of the mesenteric lesions may contribute significantly to the correct diagnosis and can expedite patient management. We report on the cytologic characteristics of enteropathy-associated intestinal T-cell lymphoma first

Serous cystadenocarcinoma of the mesentery in a man: case report and review of literature.

In February 2007, a 41-year-old Japanese male was admitted to our hospital with increasing upper abdominal pain. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen demonstrated a well-demarcated, hypodense cystic mass with a thickened wall in the mesocolon. The laboratory results were within normal limits, except for increased carcinoembryonic antigen, carbohydrate antigen 19-9, DUPAN-2 and SPAN-1. The patient was diagnosed as having a mesenteric malignant cyst, and during a laparotomy, a right hemicolectomy with mesenteric cystectomy was performed without rupture in March 2007.

Multiple Enteric Duplication Cysts in a Twin Fetus: Diagnosis and management.

Enteric duplication cysts are rare congenital anomalies of the gastrointestinal tract. These can be suspected if cystic lesions are noted in the fetal abdomen during an antenatal ultrasonogram. The differential diagnoses of fetal intra-abdominal cystic lesions include fetal omental cysts, fetal mesenteric cysts, meconium pseudocysts and fetal ovarian cysts. We report an antenatally diagnosed enteric duplication cyst in one of a set of twin fetuses which was managed successfully.
