The intestines and mesentery of the nutria (Myocastor coypus) have not been fully described. In the present study 30 adult nutrias were studied using gross dissection. The small intestine was divided into the duodenum, jejunum and ileum as usual. The duodenum started at the pylorus with a cranial portion, which dilated forming a duodenal ampulla. We report a patient with extensive lipomatosis involving both the ileum and mesentery. Axial computed tomographic images showed that diffuse and multiple intramural masses of fat densities compressed the ileum interior and abundant mesenteric fat compressed the retroperitoneum. Coronal magnetic resonance images showed thumbprinting of fluid containing ileum caused by fat-intensity masses.

We herein describe the case of a 48-year-old man who presented to our hospital with abdominal distension and pain. Preoperative studies including abdominal ultrasonography and computed tomography failed to determine the cause of the pain. At laparotomy, a giant cystic tumor of the small bowel mesentery was found. Histologically, the tumor was diagnosed as a cystic lymphangioma. Although mesenteric lymphangiomas are rare, especially in adults, they should be considered as a possible cause of acute abdomen.

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal involvement by Wilms' tumor indicates stage III disease. CT is the single preferred modality in determining the extent and staging of Wilms' tumor; however, the CT appearances of Wilms' tumor involvement of the peritoneum have not been specifically addressed in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to demonstrate the CT manifestations when there is involvement of the peritoneum, mesentery and/or omentum in Wilms' tumor.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four cases of Wilms' tumor form the basis of this report. They were examined on Elscint CT scanners.

Mesenteric lymphangioma is a rare, benign cystic tumor of the lymphatic system, which is commonly found in younger children and may in certain cases lead to an acute abdominal manifestation. The treatment of choice is surgical resection without damage to the blood supply of the bowel. The prognosis is generally favourable, but with increasing tumor size radical resection becomes more difficult and local recurrence more probable.

A mucinous cystadenoma of the mesentery and two borderline mucinous cystadenocarcinomas of the mesentery and retroperitoneum are reported. The patients were females, aged 38, 47 and 58 years. The cysts showed identical features to those commonly seen in the appendix and ovary. One of our cases, with 'borderline' histology, developed metastases to mediastinal lymph nodes, 4 years after diagnosis. We suggest that these tumours develop through mucinous metaplasia in pre-existing mesothelium-lined cysts, the latter being the commonest cysts in this location.
