Association between the incidence of typhoid and paratyphoid fever and meteorological variables in Guizhou, China.

BACKGROUND: Typhoid/paratyphoid fever (TPF) is endemic in Guizhou. We conducted wavelet analysis and Spearman's rank correlation analysis to explore the impact of meteorological variations on TPF infection in Guizhou, in an attempt to assess the risk factors associated with TPF epidemics. METHODS: We examined the association between TPF incidence in Guizhou and temperature, precipitation and relative humidity using 24 years of data from 1984 to 2007. Periodicities of TPF incidence and the impact of climate factors on the TPF were detected by Spearman's rank correlation and wavelet analysis,

Extreme nitrogen oxide and ozone concentrations in Athens atmosphere in relation to meteorological conditions.

In the present study, we investigate the variation of NOx)(NO + NO2) and O3 concentrations and the relation between the extreme events (episodes) of NOx and O3 concentrations and the relevant meteorological conditions in the urban atmosphere of the Athens basin. Hourly data of NO, NO2 and O3 concentrations from 10 representative monitoring sites located in the Athens basin were used, covering the 10-year time period from 1994 to 2003. The results of our analysis show that the concentrations of air pollutants differ significantly from one monitoring site to another, due to the location and prox

Incidence of clinically confirmed farmer's lung in Finland and its relation to meteorological factors.

In Finland, data about the incidence of clinically confirmed (according to predefined criteria) farmer's lung have been collected in successive years since 1980. All special hospitals for pulmonary diseases and departments of pulmonary diseases in other hospitals (23 clinical units throughout Finland) took part in the study. This report deals with the results collected from 1980 to 1982 (inclusive), during which 512 new cases of farmer's lung were recorded, 186 in 1980, 153 in 1981, and 173 in 1982. The mean age of the patients was 47 years (range 14-75), 45 years for men and 48 years for wome

[Meteorological conditions and spontaneous pneumothorax. Retrospective study of 165 cases in the Rouen area].

The occurrence of a spontaneous "idiopathic" pneumothorax in 165 patients admitted to hospital could be precisely dated over a 5-year period. An analysis of the meteorological conditions recorded at these dates (mean atmospheric pressure, mean temperature, relative and absolute humidity) and of their seasonal distribution demonstrated two peaks of frequency, one in the summer, the other in the winter, and a significant correlation between the occurrence of pneumothorax and a low relative humidity. These results, particularly clear during the exceptionally dry summer of 1976, confirm some data

The mediating roles of gut microbiota in the associations of air pollution and meteorological factors with metabolic syndrome.

We characterized distinct gut microbial community clusters associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS) and identified key genera underlying these patterns. Health-associated clusters were dominated by beneficial genera such as Bacteroides and Prevotella with known metabolic protective functions. Environmental exposures (air pollution and temperature) were associated with gut microbiota composition, and may increase the risk of MetS. Our findings further suggest that specific bacterial genera, particularly Megamonas and Megasphaera, may statistically mediate the associations of long-term exposure

The correlational study of the 24 solar terms and meteorological factors with the acute exacerbation of bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe mood disorder, and increasing evidence suggests that acute episodes of BD may exhibit seasonal patterns. However, the relationship between acute BD episodes and meteorological factors remains a contentious issue in academia. This study aims to investigate the distribution of BD acute episodes across 24 solar terms, offering a fresh perspective on the link between BD acute episodes and meteorological factors. METHODS: This analysis was based on retrospectively collected hospitalization records from patients with acute BD episodes at Anhui Mental He

Characterizing global air pollution seasonality and trends through integrated satellite and meteorological analytics.

Air pollution remains a major global health and climate challenge, contributing to 6.7-8 million premature deaths annually. Using six years (2019-2024) of monthly Sentinel-5P (NO 2, SO 2, CO, O 3, and HCHO) and ERA5-Land meteorological data, this study quantified the seasonal variability, spatial regimes, and temporal evolution of global atmospheric composition. Strong and statistically significant seasonality was confirmed (ANOVA p < 0.001), with NO2 increasing by up to 40 % in winter over South and East Asia and O3 increasing by 35 % in summer across the mid-latitudes. Seasonal Mann-Kendall

Interpretable Machine Learning and Spatiotemporal Modeling of Meteorological and Environmental Drivers for Tuberculosis Incidence in China.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health burden in China. Although meteorological and environmental factors are recognized to influence TB transmission, their non-linear effects and spatiotemporal heterogeneity have not been fully elucidated. Based on monthly TB incidence data from 31 provinces in China during 2005-2020, this study systematically investigated these effects by integrating nine meteorological and air pollution variables within a combined machine learning and spatial statistical modeling framework. The results indicated that the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model ef

Response of urban lake water quality to monthly hydro-meteorological drivers at the catchment scale.

Urban storm-water runoff transports nutrients into water bodies, where high temperature and wind accelerate pollution risks. Understanding the impact of hydro-meteorological and urban development factors, specifically gross domestic product (GDP), population density, and green cover rate, on water quality under climate change is essential for integrated urban water management. Focusing on East Lake in Wuhan (2012–2023), this study analyzes interannual and seasonal variations in precipitation, temperature, wind, and total phosphorus (TP) concentration, evaluates their statistical relationships,

Short-term effects of meteorological factors on hand, foot, and mouth disease in Zhengzhou, China.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) demonstrates distinct seasonal patterns in high-incidence regions, highlighting the growing interest in the relationship between meteorological factors and disease transmission. Nevertheless, findings across different geographic areas remain highly heterogeneous. Data on HFMD cases in Zhengzhou City from 2009 to 2023 were obtained from the Zhengzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention, while meteorological data were sourced from the National Meteorological Data Sharing Service System. Distributed lag nonlinear models (DLNM) was employed to quantify th

Association between meteorological factors and varicella incidence in Japan: a nationwide time-series study.

Varicella, commonly referred to as chickenpox, is an airborne infectious disease that continues to pose an increasing threat to public health. Despite previous investigations, the global accumulation of epidemiological studies exploring the association between varicella epidemics and meteorological factors remains insufficient. This study aimed to quantify the short-term effect of meteorological factors, such as mean temperature and relative humidity, on the incidence of varicella across all 47 prefectures of Japan over a decade (2010-2019). Using a two-stage time-series modelling design, we f

Investigating linkages between human movement and meteorological variables on dengue outbreaks in the Pacific Islands.

The Pacific Island Countries and territories (PICs) experienced a doubling of annual reported dengue outbreaks between 2012 to 2019, including concurrent outbreaks of multiple dengue serotypes. This has major health implications for the region as reinfection can lead to more serious health complications. Decision support systems for dengue can mitigate the risk of outbreaks by providing information on which early planning and proactive interventions may be based. Such decision support systems require an understanding of the factors that drive dengue outbreaks. Current efforts to build decision
