Ultrasound-driven triphasic contact-electro-catalytic CO2 reduction to methanol.

Converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value fuels and chemicals via catalytic technologies has emerged as a leading strategy for achieving carbon cycling and mitigating the energy crisis. However, traditional electrocatalytic processes typically rely on external power sources and noble metal catalysts, posing challenges of high cost and large energy consumption. This work reports a novel contact-electrification-based catalytic strategy using a polyimide (PI) aerogel, a non-metallic catalyst, for the direct catalytic conversion of CO2 and achieving an ultra-high methanol selectivity of 93.6

LSPR-Driven Heterojunction Catalysts for Enhanced Photothermal CO2-to-Methanol.

The Cu-CeO2-L catalyst exhibiting localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics was successfully fabricated via a urea-mediated self-assembly strategy. Under reaction conditions of 160 °C and 2 MPa (CO2/H2 = 1:3), the catalyst demonstrated a remarkable methanol yield of 2408.34 μmol·g-1·h-1, which was 3.48 times higher than the performance without light illumination. Monochromatic light experiments revealed similar performance at 550 and 365 nm, indicating that LSPR-generated "hot electrons" from Cu nanoparticles effectively overcame activation barriers in CO2 hydrogenation. Selective Hydrogenation of Formamide to Methanol Over Supported Platinum Catalysts.

The rising global energy demand, driven by population and economic growth, continues to be met largely by fossil fuels. Consequently, atmospheric CO2 concentration has increased from ∼280 ppm in the pre-industrial era to over 430 ppm today, motivating integrated capture-and-conversion strategies that valorize CO2 as a feedstock. Amines are widely employed for post-combustion CO2 capture due to their low cost, rapid kinetics, and reversible carbamate formation. These amine-CO2 adducts can be hydrogenated to formamides and subsequently to methanol under mild conditions (<150°C), regenerating the

Engineering energy-efficient Saccharomyces cerevisiae for methanol and CO2 assimilation.

Methanol is a promising one-carbon (C1) feedstock for microbial bioconversion; however, engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae often faces energetic constrains during its assimilation. Here, we develop SC-AOX25, an energy-efficient methylotrophic S. cerevisiae, through engineering of heterologous methanol-formaldehyde-formate (MFF) oxidation pathways coupled with adaptive laboratory evolution. SC-AOX25 efficiently generates adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) during methanol metabolism while co-assimilating methanol-derived intermediates (formaldehyde, format

Multiscale spatiotemporal heterogeneity of zeolite-catalyzed methanol-to-hydrocarbons reaction.

The methanol-to-hydrocarbons (MTH) process provides a sustainable route to light olefins, aromatics, and gasoline-range products with methanol synthesized via syngas platform molecules obtained from nonpetroleum alternative feedstocks, such as coal, biomass, and natural gas. Zeolite-catalyzed MTH reactions inherently exhibit multiscale heterogeneity, which is intrinsically linked to the rational design of high-efficiency industrial catalysts and the regulation of product selectivity. Despite extensive research on zeolite-based MTH catalysis, most studies focused on a single scale and a multisc

Efficient Hydrogen Production from Aqueous Methanol Driven by Microdroplet Interfaces.

Methanol is an attractive liquid feedstock for sustainable H2 production due to its high hydrogen storage density and favorable handling properties, yet conventional routes typically involve harsh conditions or noble-metal catalysts. Here, we present a catalyst-free microdroplet strategy for efficient H2 production from aqueous methanol under mild conditions, achieving an evolution rate of 968.1 μmol h-1 in an enlarged 3.5 L reactor using seawater as the water source. This performance outperforms most reported photocatalytic methanol dehydrogenation systems, with formaldehyde as the dominant l

Metabolic engineering of Escherichia coli for methanol-assisted resveratrol biosynthesis.

Resveratrol is a high-value stilbenoid with diverse pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications. However, its microbial production remains limited by insufficient precursor availability and inefficient carbon utilization. In this study, Escherichia coli was sequentially engineered to establish a methanol-assisted platform for resveratrol biosynthesis. The heterologous pathway was reconstructed by co-expressing Populus tomentosa 4-coumarate: CoA ligase (Pt4CL) and Arachis hypogaea stilbene synthase (AhSTS), followed by introduction of the matBC operon from Streptomyces coelicolor to enhance i

Selectivity control by zeolites during methanol-mediated CO2 hydrogenation processes.

The thermocatalytic conversion of CO2 with green or blue hydrogen into valuable energy and commodity chemicals such as alcohols, olefins, and aromatics emerges as one of the most promising strategies for mitigating global warming concerns in the future. This process can follow either a CO2-modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis route or a methanol-mediated route, with the latter being favored for its high product selectivity beyond the Anderson-Schulz-Flory distribution. Despite the progress of the CO2-led methanol-mediated route over bifunctional metal/zeolite catalysts, challenges persist in dev

Methanol and Carbon Monoxide Metabolism of the Thermophile Moorella caeni.

Moorella species are thermophilic acetogens that primarily produce acetate from one-carbon (C1) compounds including CO, CO2 (+H2), methanol and formate. Notably, Moorella caeni DSM 21394T displays a hydrogenogenic metabolism on CO and an acetogenic metabolism on methanol. Furthermore, M. caeni is unable to use CO2 (+H2) and grows only on formate in the presence of a methanogen or when thiosulfate is added as an electron acceptor. Presently, all theoretical frameworks for C1 metabolism in Moorella species are derived from experimental and genomic analyses of Moorella thermoacetica, which exhibi

High-entropy alloyed single-atom Pt for methanol oxidation electrocatalysis.

The methanol oxidation reaction is the bottleneck for direct methanol fuel cells. Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art Pt-based catalysts suffer heavily from the CO poisoning problem. Isolating Pt atoms in a material can avoid CO poisoning. However, single-atom Pt catalysts alone are inert towards methanol oxidation reaction. Here, we report high-entropy alloyed single-atom Pt catalysts, in which single-atom Pt sites are alloyed with non-noble elements in a high-entropy structure. This catalyst not only possesses active Pt sites but also inherits the ability of single-atom Pt to resist CO poiso

Unlocking Key Intermediates in Copper-Catalyzed CO2 to Methanol Conversion.

Although copper catalysts have been widely employed in various catalytic transformations, their potential for converting CO2 to methanol remains largely unexplored to date. Herein, it is reported that a copper(I) salt efficiently converts CO2 into methanol equivalent in the presence of NaBH4 and an amide ligand (L1) under mild reaction conditions. The in situ generated active catalyst in the reaction is isolated as a single crystal and the structure solution reveals the formation of a reactive two-coordinate Cu(I) dimeric catalyst [Li2(THF)4Cu(L1)4] (1). The key transient species "copper-hydri

Nanoconfinement promotes CO2 electroreduction to methanol on a molecular catalyst.

Confining catalysis within a nanospace can effectively regulate intermediate configurations and product distributions. Here, we demonstrate the inner cavity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a nanoreactor to promote the electrochemical conversion of CO2 to methanol (CH3OH). Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules are rationally incorporated into CNTs of varying diameters, exhibiting different CH3OH selectivities. CoPc confined within the CNTs is more prone to CH3OH production, whereas CoPc located on the exterior primarily facilitates CO formation. Operando spectroelectrochemical measurements and t

Optimizing butyrate production from methanol and CO2 in microbial electrosynthesis.

Microbial electrosynthesis (MES) enables the conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into valuable chemicals utilizing renewable electricity. Acetate is often the main product but supplying a soluble electron donor facilitates upgrading acetate to butyrate via chain elongation. Compared to ethanol as the electron donor, methanol is a promising alternative as its production avoids the competition with food production. However, the optimal operation conditions for maximizing butyrate production rates in methanol assisted MES have not yet been determined. In this study, methanol assisted chain elongat

Nanozeolite-Driven Gear-Catalysis Enabling Sequential Methanol-to-Aromatics Conversion.

Controlling diffusion and elementary reaction pathways to achieve high selectivity and stability has been a long-standing challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we develop a "gear-catalyst" system that spatially and kinetically decouples the methanol-to-aromatics (MTA) reaction into two sequential steps: methanol-to-olefins and olefins-to-aromatics. We show that nanoZSM-5 (high Si/Al ratio, ∼100 nm particle size) serves as a highly efficient smaller "gear" for rapid olefin generation and accelerated mass transfer, while micrometer-sized Zn-exchanged ZSM-5 (Zn/Z5) acts as the larger "gear"

Material Challenges and Developments for High-Temperature Methanol Fuel Cells.

While of significant value in supplying sustainable electricity for mobile and stationary use, the large-scale application of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) is an ongoing challenge. DMFCs make use of methanol oxidation (MOR) on the anode and oxygen reduction (ORR) on the cathode, with the two reaction chambers being separated by an ion-conducting membrane. Broad application is hindered by material limitations due to sluggish kinetics on the anode, as the MOR involves six electrons, as well as limited temperature stability and methanol crossover of conventional membrane materials. Their tem

Single iron redox sites boost Methanol-SCR at low temperature.

Selective catalytic reduction of NOx to N2 by methanol as a reducing agent presents a prospective solution for the removal of NOx from the exhaust of methanol engines and the coal-fired power plant, but it confronts the problem of insufficient deNOx activity at low temperatures (<350 °C). Here, we discover a strategy for boosting the activity of low-temperature Methanol-SCR by the collaboration of zeolitic acid sites with single iron redox sites. The further pilot-scale bench test using the coated monolithic catalyst also exhibits a remarkable NOx conversion and a high stability at low tempera

Reactivating Molecular Cobalt Catalysts for Electrochemical CO2 Conversion to Methanol.

Molecular catalysts immobilized on a carbon support have demonstrated electrocatalytic CO2 conversion capabilities distinct from those of metallic surfaces. For instance, cobalt phthalocyanine supported on carbon nanotubes (CoPc/CNT) is capable of selective CO2-to-methanol conversion with ∼30% selectivity, which cannot be accomplished by other metal catalysts, such as cobalt, silver, and copper. However, despite its promising methanol selectivity, the CoPc/CNT catalyst exhibits a gradual decrease in the methanol production rate during the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR).
