This article deals with the microbiological aspects of infections, the principles and role of antibiotic use and the general management of the patient suffering from an odontogenic infection. Clinical aspects of the most common presentations will be addressed to understand the organized management of these challenging patients. (Part one appeared in Oral Health, May, 1995).

Aerobic and anaerobic bacteria were grown from specimens obtained from 30 children with secondarily infected scabies lesions. Aerobic or facultative bacteria only were present in 14 (47%) patients, anaerobic bacteria only were present in 6 (20%) patients, and a mixed anaerobic-aerobic flora was present in 10 (33%) patients. Fifty isolates were recovered (1.7 per specimen); 27 were aerobic or facultative bacteria and 23 were strict anaerobes. The predominant aerobic and facultative bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus (nine isolates), group A streptococci (five isolates), and Pseudomonas aerugin

The aerobic actinomycetes are soil-inhabiting microorganisms that occur worldwide. In 1888, Nocard first recognized the pathogenic potential of this group of microorganisms. Since then, several aerobic actinomycetes have been a major source of interest for the commercial drug industry and have proved to be extremely useful microorganisms for producing novel antimicrobial agents. They have also been well known as potential veterinary pathogens affecting many different animal species. The medically important aerobic actinomycetes may cause significant morbidity and mortality, in particular in hi

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the aetiology of acute epididymitis in a developing community with a view of determining appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
SETTING: City Health Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic, King Edward VIII Hospital, Durban, South Africa.
PARTICIPANTS: 144 adult men with clinically diagnosed acute epididymitis.
METHOD: Endourethral swab and midstream urine (MSU) specimens were processed to detect sexually transmitted pathogens and urinary tract infections.
RESULTS: The majority of patients (93%) were less than 35 years of age. Neisseria gonorrhoeae and/or Chlamydia trach

In a prospective study, patients with the diagnosis of chronic ethmoid sinusitis were evaluated microbiologically by using biopsy specimens of the ethmoid sinus mucosa. Microbiology cultures were performed on 94 specimens from 59 patients. Staphylococcus aureus and members of the family Enterobacteriaceae were the most frequent classical pathogenic bacteria isolated. Coagulase-negative staphylococci were the most common overall isolates. Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae were infrequent isolates. No anaerobes, viruses, or Chlamydia trachomatis organisms were identified. Resul

Tuberculosis is a disease that has plagued humankind for centuries. The "white plague" is not only treatable and curable but also preventable. Initially, tuberculosis fell in the province of the general physician. With the advent of technologic advances in thoracic surgery, surgical management of tuberculosis was brought to the forefront. Effective bactericidal drug therapy became available by 1954 after the development of streptomycin in 1945 and isoniazid in 1952. Additional effective antituberculous drugs have relegated surgical therapy for tuberculosis to a relatively minor role.

A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the tonsillar surface and core of children with recurrent streptococcal tonsillitis and children with obstructive tonsillar hypertrophy was performed. No qualitative difference was found within the two population groups. Haemophilus influenzae and Bacteroides melaninogenicus were the most prevalent beta-lactamase-producing isolates in both groups. Staphylococcus aureus had the highest rate of beta-lactamase production on the tonsillar surface of children with recurrent tonsillitis, while Streptococcus pyogenes was more prevalent in the tonsillar surfa

By 30 June 1984, only 99 confirmed and probable cases of toxic shock syndrome (TSS) had been reported in the British Isles. Sixty-three were related to menstruation in women aged 14 to 54 years who used tampons of various brands and absorbencies; 33 (52%) of these cases were in girls under 20. Five women died (8%) and 19 (30%) reported at least one other possible episode. Thirty-six cases associated with a variety of clinical conditions occurred in men aged 17 to 74 years (9), women aged 20 to 54 years (15) and 12 children aged 10 months to 10 years; six patients (17%) died. Strains of Staphyl

Tinidazole is a 5-nitroimidazole with selective activity against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It is bactericidal at low concentrations and its spectrum covers most anaerobic bacteria and some capnophilic microorganisms. Anaerobic bacteria known to be resistant to tinidazole include anaerobic streptococci, actinomyces and propionibacteria. Tinidazole is one of the most active antibacterial agents against Bacteroides fragilis which is one of the most resistant species of anaerobic bacteria. Only a few strains have been reported to be resistant. Tinidazole has been shown to be efficacious in

Metabolomics provides a direct window into microbial function by capturing the small molecules that reflect cellular activity and microbial interactions. Here, we highlight its diverse applications for microbiologists across both in vitro and in vivo models under dynamic biological and nutritional conditions, including variations in community complexity, medium composition, and exposure to exogenous compounds such as antibiotics. Through representative case studies, we demonstrate how metabolomics provides critical insights into microbial physiology and inter-organismal interactions. We also s

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influencing healthcare, with growing relevance in infectious diseases and clinical microbiology. This review summarizes current applications of machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and large language models (LLMs) in these areas while critically evaluating their strengths and limitations. Although AI has shown promising performance in image analysis, molecular diagnostics, risk prediction, and clinical decision support, its routine implementation remains constrained by limited external validation, heterogeneous datasets, algorithmic bias, and

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in global health systems while accelerating the adoption of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) as a transformative tool for culture-independent, unbiased microbial detection. In clinical diagnostics, mNGS enables simultaneous detection of diverse pathogens without prior hypothesis, though its yield depends heavily on specimen type and clinical context. In public health, mNGS has demonstrated remarkable utility in outbreak tracing, novel pathogen discovery, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance, and One Health initiatives. Howev

INTRODUCTION: Uncomplicated urinary tract (UTI) infections are a frequent cause of medical consultation in healthy adult women, with most cases treated empirically. Antimicrobial susceptibility has been shown to change over time. Our objectives were to analyze the microbiology and antimicrobial resistance patterns in positive urine cultures obtained from women with UTIs at two hospitals in Córdoba, Argentina, and to assess susceptibility changes by comparing our findings with previous local studies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective analytical study was conducted in two tertiary care cente

Super-resolution microscopy has emerged as a groundbreaking tool in microbiology, enabling the visualization of structures and molecules far below the diffraction limit of light. We provide an overview of the various techniques employed in super-resolution microscopy, including deterministic (scanning and structured illumination) and stochastic (single-molecule localization microscopy and fluctuation-based computation) methods, summarizing their respective advantages and limitations. Applications in microbiology are presented, including investigations of cellular processes, physiology, cell wa

BACKGROUND: Clinical microbiology culture interpretation depends on accurate specimen context, including specimen type, anatomic source, and collection method. However, electronic ordering systems often permit nonspecific culture orders that do not capture the information needed for appropriate processing, reporting, and result interpretation.
METHODS: We performed a quality improvement intervention at an academic tertiary care center to replace a generic "aerobic culture" order with specimen-specific wound, sterile body fluid, and tissue/biopsy culture orders linked to required specimen type
