Unraveling Gender Differences in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Focus on Key Micronutrients.

Introduction Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a persistent psychiatric condition that causes significant clinical and functional impairments. Recent research suggests a link between deficiencies in micronutrients, particularly vitamin B12, folic acid, and elevated homocysteine, and the development of OCD. This study investigates the blood levels of these micronutrients and their relationship to OCD severity, with an emphasis on potential gender differences. Methods This cross-sectional study included 300 drug-free OCD patients. Serum levels of vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine we

The effect of circulating micronutrients on nasopharyngeal carcinoma: A Mendelian randomization study.

This study investigates the causal relationships between circulating levels of 14 circulating micronutrients and the risk of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. We conducted a 2-sample MR study using genome-wide association studies datasets. Data on 14 circulating micronutrients were obtained from UK Biobank datasets. The genome-wide association studies dataset of NPC (malignant neoplasm of nasopharynx) was downloaded from the FinnGen database. MR analyses were performed using the inverse variance weighted method, the MR-Egger method, and the weighted me

Genetically determined circulating micronutrients and the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Evidence from epidemiological literature on the association of circulating micronutrients with risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is inconsistent. We aimed to elucidate the causal relationships using Mendelian randomization (MR). Single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with 14 circulating micronutrients (β-carotene, calcium, copper, folate, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, vitamin B6, B12, C, D, K1 and zinc) were employed as instrumental variables. Summary level data for NAFLD were obtained from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of 8434 cases and 770,1

Biomarkers of seafood intake during pregnancy - Pollutants versus fatty acids and micronutrients.

Intake of fish and seafood during pregnancy may have certain beneficial effects on fetal development, but measurement of intake using questionnaires is unreliable. Here, we assessed several candidate biomarkers of seafood intake, including long-chain omega 3 fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFA), selenium, iodine, methylmercury, and different arsenic compounds, in 549 pregnant women (gestational week 29) in the prospective birth cohort NICE (Nutritional impact on Immunological maturation during Childhood in relation to the Environment). Proportions of the fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapent

The Role of Micronutrients in the Pathogenesis of Alcohol-Related Liver Disease.

AIMS: Chronic alcohol consumption may result in liver injury and chronic liver disease, but other factors are likely to influence disease progression. Malnutrition, specifically micronutrient deficiency, is frequently associated with both alcohol use disorder and chronic liver disease. We hypothesize that micronutrient deficiencies may affect the progression of liver disease in this population. METHODS: Systematic integrative review of the medical literature; electronic search of MEDLINE 1950-2021; studies investigating role of any micronutrient in the acceleration of alcohol-related liver in

Nutrients and micronutrients at risk during renal replacement therapy: a scoping review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Malnutrition is frequent in patients with acute kidney injury. Nutrient clearance during renal replacement therapy (RRT) potentially contributes to this complication. Although losses of amino acid, trace elements and vitamins have been described, there is no clear guidance regarding the role of micronutrient supplementation. RECENT FINDINGS: A scoping review was conducted with the aim to review the existing literature on micronutrients status during RRT: 35 publications including data on effluent losses and blood concentrations were considered relevant and analysed. Micronutrients in autoimmune diseases: possible therapeutic benefits of zinc and vitamin D.

A functional immune system is essential for healthy life. This is achieved by the coordinate activation and interaction of different immune cells. One should be aware that activation of the immune response is as important as its deactivation when the pathogens are cleared, as otherwise host tissue can be damaged up to life-threatening levels. Autoimmune diseases (AID) represent a phenomenon of immune cells attacking host cells and tissue. Five to eight percent of the world's population are currently affected by 80-100 AID. In recent years, the incidence has been constantly increasing, reaching

Gene polymorphisms and low dietary intake of micronutrients in coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a complex disorder involving genetic and non-genetic factors. Food is an important component of the latter. We examined if DNA polymorphisms in genes encoding enzymes of one-carbon metabolism coupled with low consumption of micronutrients such as folate, vitamins B(6) and B(12) might increase the risk of CAD. METHODS: A case-control study consisting of 252 CAD patients and 252 controls were included. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), 2 insertion/deletion and 1 repeat polymorphism were typed. The micronutrient intake was estimated fr

Do the Micronutrients Zinc and Magnesium Play a Role in Adult Depression?

Depression is a widespread disorder that affects more than 120 million people worldwide. The unsatisfactory clinical efficacy and adverse effects of antidepressant medication have prompted the search for novel treatments. Micronutrient deficiencies may play a role in the development of depression, and recent research studies have explored the use of micronutrient supplementation as an adjunct to the pharmacotherapy of this psychiatric illness. This article provides a review of the empirical evidence linking zinc and magnesium deficiency and depression, discusses possible mechanisms of action i

Micronutrients versus standard medication management in autism: a naturalistic case-control study.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often accompanied by self-injurious behavior (SIB), aggression, and tantrums, symptoms that have reportedly improved with micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) treatment. The current study took advantage of naturally occurring differences in parental preferences for treatment approaches. The micronutrient group asked for treatment without pharmaceuticals (n = 44, aged 2-28 years at entry [M = 8.39 +/- 5.58]). Their records were matched with those of 44 similar children whose families requested conventional treatment (medication group). Both groups improved on

Influence of micronutrients on rheological characteristics and bread-making quality of flour.

Studies were carried out to see the influence of different iron and calcium salts along with some vitamins on the rheological characteristics and bread-making quality of wheat flour. Fortification with iron (30-90 ppm) from different sources showed a marginal increase in water absorption (2%). Calcium ranging between 800 and 1,600 ppm did not show any influence on the mixing properties of the dough. Except for ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and calcium lactate, all other salts did not have any influence on the alveograph characteristics. The gelatinization temperature slightly increased by a

COMT genotype, micronutrients in the folate metabolic pathway and breast cancer risk.

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the O-methylation of catechol estrogens (CEs), using S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) as a methyl donor. Several studies have indicated that the val108met COMT polymorphism, which results in a 3-4-fold decrease in activity, is associated with increased breast cancer risk. Folate, whose intake levels have also been associated with breast cancer risk, and other micronutrients in the folate metabolic pathway influence levels of SAM and S-adenosylhomocysteine (SAH), a COMT inhibitor generated by the demethylation of SAM. Because these micronutrients have bee

Do antioxidant micronutrients protect against the development and progression of knee osteoarthritis?

OBJECTIVE: Cumulative damage to tissues, mediated by reactive oxygen species, has been implicated as a pathway that leads to many of the degenerative changes associated with aging. We hypothesized that increased intake of antioxidant micronutrients might be associated with decreased rates of osteoarthritis (OA) in the knees, a common age-related disorder. METHODS: Participants in the Framingham Osteoarthritis Cohort Study underwent knee evaluations by radiography at examinations 18 (1983-1985) and 22 (1992-1993). Usual dietary intake was assessed using the Food Frequency Questionnaire, admini
