Spatially resolved composition of bovine dental enamel in permanent incisors.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify component volumes (mineral, organic, total water, firmly and loosely bound water volumes, and permeability) at histological points in bovine enamel and investigate their association with bovine enamel's optical behavior and fracture toughness (FT). DESIGN: In vitro, cross-sectional, and experimental study. Longitudinal ground sections of ten permanent bovine incisors were analyzed using microradiography, polarizing microscopy, microhardness tester, and confocal laser fluorescence microscopy (CLFM). Continuous data were analyzed using regression and correlation tests. R

Remineralization effectiveness of the PAMAM dendrimer with different terminal groups on artificial initial enamel caries in vitro.

OBJECTIVE: Disruption of the demineralization-remineralization balance could trigger the development of dental caries, making it challenging for enamel to "self-heal". Thus, extrinsic assistance is needed to restore enamel lesions and stop undermining progression. The aim of this study was to investigate enamel remineralization in a simulated oral environment via poly (amino amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers quantitatively. METHODS: Bovine enamel specimens were shaken in demineralization solution (pH 4.5, 37°C, 50rpm/min) for 72h to create initial enamel carious lesions. The subsurface-demineralized

Reprecipitation during the preparation of demineralized sections. II. Experimental observations.

Teeth were incompletely demineralized by immersion in unchanged 10% formic acid for 7 days. Reprecipitation deposits of secondary calcium phosphate were present in the dentin and soft tissues of the dental pulp and, if the final pH was 3 or greater, in the remnants of the periodontal ligament. The deposits in the dentin appeared to be intratubular. Deminieralized sections of teeth suspended in supersaturated solutions of brushite contained similar deposits in the soft tissues. It is suggested that reprecipitation of secondary calcium phosphates is a frequent intermediate stage during demineral

Predicting infiltration of the surface layer of natural enamel caries.

AIM: To test the hypothesis that the water volume more easily available for diffusion (αd) is the best predictor among all major components of the proportion of pore volume infiltrated by a liquid in the surface layer of dry natural enamel caries (NEC). MATERIALS AND METHOD: Two aqueous solutions of mercuric and potassium iodide (Thoulet's solutions) with different refractive indexes (1.4 and 1.47) and penetration coefficients (3212 cm/s and 2297 cm/s) were tested at histological points (n = 63) of ground sections of NEC lesions. Component volumes were measured with microradiography and inter

[A microradiographic and histological study of a case of dentinogenesis imperfecta type I].

Four temporary teeth, extracted for periodontal infection reasons, from a 53-months-old child with osteogenesis imperfecta, have been coated in methyl metacrylate and prepared for microradiographic analysis and light microscopic study. The enamel and dentin of three teeth (51, 65 and 85) don't show any particularity, some how the cementum is remarkably thin. Pulp chambers was large and contain a great number of calcifications. Some of them present a radial striation around a radio-transparent center, and when coloured with blue of methylen, they revealed inflammatory or fibroblastic cells. The

Scanning Electron Microscopy of Bone.

This chapter describes methods for preparing samples of bone and bone cells for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Backscattered electron (BSE) imaging is by far the most useful in the bone field, followed by secondary electrons (SE) and the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analytical modes. Samples may have 3D detail in a 3D surface, or be topography-free, polished or micromilled, resin-embedded block surfaces, or resin casts of space compartments surrounded by bone matrix. Methods for cells include fixation, drying, looking at undersides of bone cells, and metallic conductive coating. Macerati

Mineralization of articular cartilage in the Sprague-Dawley rat: characterization and mechanical analysis.

The formation of mineralized deposits in human articular cartilage is a common occurrence [–4]; however, the relationship between mineral deposition and material properties of the articular cartilage is not well understood nor the relationship between mineral deposition and the development of degenerative joint disease. Several different crystalline structures have been identified in articular cartilage and synovial fluid including monosodium urate, calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD), and basic calcium phosphates (BCPs). These distinct mineral phases are associated with specific pathologie

Effect of single-dose amoxicillin on rat incisor odontogenesis: a morphological study.

The effect of exposure to amoxicillin on tooth development remains to be elucidated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of amoxicillin on rat incisor odontogenesis. Male Wistar rats weighing approximately 100 g were given a single intraperitoneal injection of 3.0 g/kg body weight amoxicillin. One week after injection, the rats were fixed, and the lower incisors were demineralized and prepared into paraffin sections for light microscopy (LM) and immunohistochemistry. Undemineralized samples were embedded in resin and ground for processing for contact microradiography (CMR)
