This chapter reviews the evidence for the impact of natural and anthropogenic barriers on the spread of rabies using evidence mainly drawn from the epidemics of fox and raccoon variant rabies virus over the past 60 years in North America. Those barriers have both directed and inhibited the spread of rabies and, at a regional scale, have been integrated with rabies control efforts in North America. Infection with Borrelia burgdorferi is common in horses and ponies from the New England and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. Here, we evaluated luciferase immunoprecipitation systems (LIPS) for profiling antibody responses against three different antigenic targets for the diagnosis of equine B. burgdorferi infection. During August, 1994 to April, 1995, a total of 2278 clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae were obtained from 187 clinical laboratories in the United States (U.S.). BACKGROUND: Unregulated opioid markets are increasingly characterized by complex and variable drug compositions. In North-eastern and Mid-Atlantic US street opioid markets, fentanyl-containing powders are commonly sold in stamped glassine bags. These "stamps" function as branding and are often used by people who use drugs, harm reduction programs and public health agencies as informal indicators of product composition or risk.
