The Prevalence of Sexual Harassment and Bullying Among Norwegian Afghanistan Veterans: Does Workplace Harassment Disproportionately Impact the Mental Health and Life Satisfaction of Female Soldiers?

Experiencing sexual harassment and bullying during military service can lead to negative consequences for a soldier's mental health and life satisfaction, including increased risk of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. No studies have to date investigated the prevalence and correlates of sexual harassment and bullying among Norwegian Afghanistan veterans, despite the increased global focus on these topics. In 2020, 6,205 Norwegian Afghanistan veterans (8.3% women) completed an online post-deployment survey, including questions about experiences of sexual harassment, bullying, mental

Long-term disability associated with war-related experience among Vietnam veterans: retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Recent combat operations have involved large numbers of personnel. Long-term health effects of military deployment remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVES: To examine patterns and trends in long-term disability among combat veterans and to relate disability to aspects of wartime experience. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 60,228 Australian military personnel deployed between 1962 and 1975 during the Vietnam War, and 82,877 military personnel who were not deployed overseas. OUTCOME MEASURES: Accepted physician-assessed disability claims were evaluated over follow-up periods up to 50 years af

Addressing feral and wild animal threats during deployment: the distinction between animal control and rabies control.

Feral and wild animal control is a critical component of force health protection during troop deployments. The primary goal of animal control during a military deployment is to limit human injury or disease by reducing the likelihood of human-animal contact on US bases. For deployed US military forces, animal control will often be necessary, and trapping and euthanasia will remain the standard. In contrast, a rabies control program focuses on reducing disease incidence in an animal population with a subsequent reduction in rabies risk to military personnel. A successful rabies control program

Long-term risk for mental health symptoms in Dutch ISAF veterans: the role of perceived social support.

BACKGROUND: Military personnel deployed to combat and peacekeeping missions are exposed to high rates of traumatic events. Accumulating evidence suggests an important association between deployment and the development of other mental health symptoms beyond post-traumatic stress disorder. METHODS: This study examined the prevalence of agoraphobia, anxiety, depression, and hostility symptoms in a cohort of Dutch ISAF veterans (N = 978) from pre-deployment up to 10 years after homecoming. The interaction of potential moderating factors with the change in mental health symptoms relative to pre-de

Impact of Family Planning Decisions Among Women in the U.S. Military.

INTRODUCTION: As of 2022, 17.5% of active duty service members are female, a population vulnerable to delayed family building because of deployments, geographic relocations, occupational hazards, and career progression demands. Despite increasing access to leadership roles, systemic support for reproductive planning remains inconsistent. The objective of this study was to evaluate how fertility planning affects career progression and retention among active duty military women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From June 2020 to December 2023, we conducted an IRB-approved, cross-sectional, anonymous surv

Opioid Prescription Clusters Associated With Early or Unplanned Military Separation.

INTRODUCTION: Early/unplanned military separation in Active Component U.S. service members can result in reduced readiness during periods of high-tempo combat and increased demand for health care services within the Military Health System and Veterans Administration. Although current assessment tools leverage prescription data to determine deployment-limiting medication receipt and the need for interventions or waivers, there is a lack of understanding regarding opioid prescription patterns and subsequent early/unplanned military separation after return from deployment. As such, understanding

Computational modeling of interventions and protective thresholds to prevent disease transmission in deploying populations.

Military personnel are deployed abroad for missions ranging from humanitarian relief efforts to combat actions; delay or interruption in these activities due to disease transmission can cause operational disruptions, significant economic loss, and stressed or exceeded military medical resources. Deployed troops function in environments favorable to the rapid and efficient transmission of many viruses particularly when levels of protection are suboptimal. When immunity among deployed military populations is low, the risk of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks increases, impacting troop readin

Deployment-related Respiratory Issues.

Military deployment to Southwest Asia since 2003 in support of Operations Enduring Freedom/Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn has presented unique challenges from a pulmonary perspective. Various airborne hazards in the deployed environment include suspended geologic dusts, burn pit smoke, vehicle exhaust emissions, industrial air pollution, and isolated exposure incidents. These exposures may give rise to both acute respiratory symptoms and in some instances development of chronic lung disease. While increased respiratory symptoms during deployment are well documented, there is limited data on whether in

Combat and peacekeeping operations in relation to prevalence of mental disorders and perceived need for mental health care: findings from a large representative sample of military personnel.

CONTEXT: Although military personnel are trained for combat and peacekeeping operations, accumulating evidence indicates that deployment-related exposure to traumatic events is associated with mental health problems and mental health service use. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationships between combat and peacekeeping operations and the prevalence of mental disorders, self-perceived need for mental health care, mental health service use, and suicidality. DESIGN: Cross-sectional, population-based survey. SETTING: Canadian military. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 8441 currently active military pers

Parental burnout among military fathers: The moderating roles of unit support, marital satisfaction, and emotional regulation strategies.

OBJECTIVE: The military family stress model (Gewirtz et al., 2018) was used to examine the associations between deployment experiences, interpersonal relationships, and four aspects of parental burnout-emotional exhaustion, contrast in parental self, fed-up feelings, and emotional distancing from the child-among military fathers. The study focused on testing main and moderating effects for these variables. METHOD: A total of 105 Israeli military fathers deployed to combat zones completed self-report questionnaires on deployment exposure, emotion regulation, unit and spousal support, and paren

Contribution of traumatic deployment experiences to the burden of mental health problems in Canadian Armed Forces personnel: exploration of population attributable fractions.

PURPOSE: Mental health problems are prevalent after combat; they are also common in its absence. Estimates of deployment-attributability vary. This paper quantifies the contribution of different subtypes of occupational trauma to post-deployment mental health problems. METHODS: Participants were a cohort of 16,193 Canadian personnel undergoing post-deployment mental health screening after return from the mission in Afghanistan. The screening questionnaire assessed post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and exposure to 30 potentially traumatic

The Lived Experience of Military Women With Chronic Pain: A Phenomenological Study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain, a persistent or recurrent pain lasting more than 3 months, is a widespread problem among military women due to combat-related injuries and post-deployment stressors. Risk factors associated with chronic pain include gender, mental health, post-traumatic stress disorder, and prior physical or military sexual trauma. The most common prevalence of chronic pain is musculoskeletal (e.g., low back and neck), migraine, osteoarthritis, and fibromyalgia. Following deployment, 25% of military women are at risk for chronic pain. Military women are prescribed opioids for pain a

Multiple Informant Cluster Analysis Findings: Which Military-Connected Preschool Aged Children Are Doing Well and Why?

Informed by models of resilience in military families, we explored factors theorized to be associated with social-emotional resilience and risk among young military-connected children. Our secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from 199 military-connected families (n = 346 parents) with at least one preschool-age child in the home (n = 199) led to the empirical identification of two distinct clusters: families with children demonstrating healthy social-emotional functioning and those showing indicators of poor social-emotional functioning. We then identified factors associated with members
