Journal of animal breeding and genetics = Zeitschrift fur Tierzuchtung und Zuchtungsbiologie2026eng
Inbreeding increases the likelihood of deleterious recessive alleles becoming homozygous and consequently affecting economically important traits. Runs of homozygosity (ROH), the continuous homozygous segments of the genome and the higher than expected homozygosity (HOM) are genomic indicators of inbreeding, quantified as FROH and FHOM, respectively. Previous ROH analyses in American mink (Neogale vison) were restricted to scaffold-level references and could not resolve long autozygous segments. In this study, we characterized ROH in 1413 mink genotyped with the Affymetrix Mink 70K panel (50,9

The genus Trichinella comprises zoonotic nematodes infecting a wide range of carnivorous and omnivorous animals, including humans. Infection occurs through the consumption of raw or undercooked meat containing viable Trichinella larvae. Among the species within this genus, Trichinella spiralis is considered one of the most epidemiologically important due to its high reproductive capacity and its frequent association with infections in domestic animals and humans. In this study, muscle samples from 18 invasive American minks (Neovison vison) were examined for Trichinella larvae using the magnet

BACKGROUND: The American mink (Neogale vison) is an invasive mustelid in Chile that serves as a natural reservoir host for several pathogens. Cardiorespiratory nematodes of the superfamily Metastrongyloidea, including Aelurostrongylus spp., have been reported in carnivores worldwide but remain poorly documented in South American wildlife and invasive species. This study reports the first detection of Aelurostrongylus spp. infection in American minks in Southern Chile.
METHODS: Between 2024 and 2025, 27 American mink carcasses were collected from the Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions, Southern Ch

Spermatogenesis in the American mink is characterized by an annual cycle of transition involving completely inactive and fully activated stages. N-glycosylation of proteins has emerged as an important regulator as it affects protein folding, secretion, degradation, and activity. However, the function of protein N-glycosylation in seasonal spermatogenesis of the American mink remains unclear. In the present study, we established a proteome-wide stoichiometry of N-glycosylation in mink testes at various phases of spermatogenesis using N-linked glycosylated-peptide enrichment in combination with

SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of COVID-19, caused respiratory disease outbreaks with increased mortality in 4 mink farms in the Netherlands. The most striking postmortem finding was an acute interstitial pneumonia, which was found in nearly all examined mink that died at the peak of the outbreaks. Acute alveolar damage was a consistent histopathological finding in mink that died with pneumonia. SARS-CoV-2 infections were confirmed by detection of viral RNA in throat swabs and by immunohistochemical detection of viral antigen in nasal conchae, trachea, and lung. Clinically, the outbreaks last

BACKGROUND: The disease Fur Animal Necrotizing Pyoderma (FNP) has since 2000 been reported in many fur producing countries including Canada, Finland and Denmark. Development of FNP is characterised by rapidly forming treatment-resistant wounds on paws and in the head region. Economic losses related to FNP have been associated with mortality and decreased fur quality as well as increased veterinary costs. Also it has been suggested that FNP may be associated with reduced production results for breeding mink. The aim of this study was to evaluate if there is an association between FNP lesions in

The present study was designed to identify nine Arcanobacterium phocae strains isolated from cases of mink dermatitis of a single farm in Finland and characterize the strains for epidemiological relationships. All nine strains and previously described A. phocae used for comparative purposes were identified and further characterized phenotypically, by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) and genotypically by detection of phocaelysin encoding gene phl with a previously developed loop-mediat

The riparian European mink (Mustela lutreola), currently surviving in only three unconnected sites in Europe, is now listed as a critically endangered species according to the IUCN. Habitat loss and degradation, anthropic mortality, interaction with the feral American mink (Neovison vison), and infectious diseases are among the principal causes of its decline. Surveys of helminth parasites of this host that also include focus on subcutaneous potentially pathogenic helminths such as those belonging to the genus Filaria are very scarce. We report here the presence of specimens of Filaria martis

An outbreak of diarrhea on a large commercial mink farm affected 5,000 of 36,000 neonatal mink kits, with 2,000 dying within a 2-week period. Affected kits were severely dehydrated, and their furcoats and paws were covered with yellow- to green-tinged mucoid feces. On necropsy, the small intestines of examined animals were markedly distended by serous to mucoid fluid. Microscopically, there was prominent colonization of the intestinal villar epithelium by gram-positive bacterial cocci in the absence of inflammation and morphologic changes in villous enterocytes. The colonizing bacteria were ph

Interspecies transmission of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), or prion diseases, can result in the adaptation and selection of TSE strains with an expanded host range and increased virulence such as in the case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. To investigate TSE strain adaptation, we serially passaged a biological clone of transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) into Syrian golden hamsters and examined the selection of distinct strain phenotypes and conformations of the disease-specific isoform of the prion protein (PrP(Sc)). Bacterial and fungi were isolated from different tissues (brain, liver, heart) taken from 81 dead newborn mink originating from Aleutian disease (AD) infected and AD-non-infected farms. Of the 123 isolates obtained, 96% were bacterial isolates (predominantly Gram-negative) and 4% were fungi. The prevalence of microorganisms appeared less common in kits from AD-non-infected farms (55%) than from AD-infected farms (73%), although the difference was not significant. The liver was the most highly infected site in both groups and generally was only infected by one microorganism species. Proteus spp

Aleutian mink disease virus (AMDV) is a pathogen that causes severe illness in minks, leading to substantial economic losses in the mink farming industry. This study investigated the influence of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), a host cell protein, on the pathological effects of AMDV in infected cells. AMDV infection caused extrinsic apoptotic pathway with Bax translocation, Cytochrome C release, and caspase-9/3 activation. Proteomic and Western blot analyses confirmed that JNK protein was downregulated after infection. JNK mRNA expression was unaffected at 12-48 h post-infection, whereas cyclo

Pentatrichomonas hominis is a zoonotic pathogen with a wide host range, yet epidemiological data in mink and raccoon dogs remain sparse. This study investigates the prevalence of P. hominis in these species by analyzing 498 fecal samples collected from Hebei, Shandong, Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang provinces in China. Results revealed an overall infection rate of 9.64% (48/498, 95% confidence interval 7.19-12.58), with mink showing a 0.36% infection rate (1/276) and raccoon dogs 21.17% (47/222). Female animals had higher infection rates (9.87%, 47/476) than males (4.55%, 1/22). Adults exhi

Enterococcus species are a normal flora of animals and humans. However, life-threatening opportunistic infections can be caused by antimicrobial resistant strains. Fecal (n = 42) and feed (n = 8) samples were obtained from a mink farm and cultured for the enumeration and detection of erythromycin-resistant (a macrolide; ERYr)- and tetracycline-resistant (TETr) enterococci. ERYr and TETr enterococci were detected from all fecal (mean concentrations = 6 and 7 logs, respectively) and feed (mean concentrations = 5 and 4 logs, respectively) samples. While Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faec

The molecular epidemiology and biological characteristics of Escherichia coli associated with hemorrhagic pneumonia (HP) mink from five Chinese Provinces were determined. From 2017 to 2019, 85 E. coli strains were identified from 115 lung samples of mink suffering from HP. These samples were subjected to serotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility, detection of virulence genes, phylogenetic grouping, whole-genome sequencing, drug resistant gene, multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and biofilm-forming assays. E. coli strains were divided into 18 serotypes. Thirty-nine E. coli strains belonged to the

We evaluated the phenotype and genotype of a fatal influenza/canine distemper virus coinfection found in farmed mink in China. We identified a novel subtype H1N1 influenza virus strain from the lungs of infected mink designated A/Mink/Shandong/1121/2017 (H1N1). The results of phylogenetic analysis of 8 gene fragments of the H1N1 strain showed the virus was a swine origin triple-reassortant H1N1 influenza virus: with the 2009 pandemic H1N1 segments (PB2, PB1, PA, NP and M), Eurasian avian-like H1N1 swine segments (HA and NA) and classical swine (NS) lineages. The EID50/0.2 mL of this strain was

The American mink (Neovison vison Schreber, 1777) is one of the most invasive alien mammal species which has been introduced to many countries in Europe, Asia and South America. As a predator which feeds on various prey, American mink carry many endoparasites; however, data about infection rate and prevalence of different parasites in mink are limited, especially concerning Trichinella spp. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of American mink in the circulation of Trichinella species in its introduced range. In total, 812 muscle samples of mink from six feral populations and three fa

Studies of amyloid enhancing factor (AEF)-induced amyloidosis are commonly performed in mice. In mink, earlier studies of amyloid A (AA) amyloidosis showed that the predeposition phase was highly variable. Thus, the aim of the study was to establish an AEF-induced AA amyloidosis model in mink to facilitate studies of early amyloid deposition in a species with prominent ellipsoids, anatomical structures lacking in mice but present in most other mammals. AEF was extracted from mink spleens containing AA. Mink received one intravenous injection of AEF and repeated subcutaneous injections of lipop

Total mercury and methylmercury concentrations were measured in brain, kidney, liver, and fur from several mink and otter collected in south-central Ontario. There was a large range in concentrations of both total and methylmercury. The percentage of the total mercury present as methylmercury varied among the various tissues; however, the percentage mercury found as the methyl form was relatively constant within a given tissue for all tissues in mink but highly variable in otter. For both species the highest percentage of methylmercury was found in the brain, whereas the lowest percentage was
