Comparison of two techniques for measuring Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis in rosacea patients: standardized skin surface biopsy vs. direct microscopic examination.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 5.4% of the world population. Among its pathogenic factors is infestation by Demodex spp. Standardized skin surface biopsy (SSSB) and direct microscopic examination (DME) are widely used methods to measure Demodex spp density (Dd); however, there is no agreement on the method of choice, nor the prevalence of infestation in rosacea patients. This study compared both techniques in rosacea patients. A prospective study was conducted with 61 patients diagnosed with rosacea by dermatologists from two dermatology centres. Dd was

Varroa destructor infestation in untreated honey bee (Hymenoptera: Apidae) colonies selected for hygienic behavior.

Honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies bred for hygienic behavior were tested in a large field trial to determine if they were able to resist the parasitic mite Varroa destructor better than unselected colonies of"Starline" stock. Colonies bred for hygienic behavior are able to detect, uncap, and remove experimentally infested brood from the nest, although the extent to which the behavior actually reduces the overall mite-load in untreated, naturally infested colonies needed further verification. The results indicate that hygienic colonies with queens mated naturally to unselected drones had s

Case report: Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Acari) attacking laying birds in conventional poultry houses.

Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) (Acaridae) is one of the most allergenic mite species worldwide, and it particularly infests household environments, animal feed factories, and food factories. It has been the aim of several studies recently in the healthcare area due to its allergenic potential. However, there had been no records of this species attacking laying birds until this report. This is the first record of adverse reactions in animals triggered by infestations of this species. Therefore, the present study aims at describing the damages and symptomatology of T. putrescentiae infestati

A cohort-based population model for the Poultry Red Mite Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae): Application to explore potential pathways for control strategies using Fluralaner as a case study.

This project addresses the challenge of controlling Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in poultry farms. A cohort-based model is developed that couples the pharmacokinetics of Fluralaner (Exzolt ®) in the plasma of laying hens with the dynamics of the mites, enabling the simulation of various treatment administration strategies while balancing costs. The study reveals that administering a reduced dose of Fluralaner (Exzolt ®) at high frequencies, in conjunction with a customized infestation tolerance threshold for each farm, provides a cost-effective solution for mite control. Specifically, thi

[Ectoparasites of rodents of the urban region of Belo Horizonte, MG. II. Variations of the infestation indices in Rattus norvegicus norvegicus].

The indices of infestation by the mites Echinolaelaps echidninus and Laelaps nuttalli, the louse Popyplax spinulosa and the flea Xenopsylla cheopis, obtained monthly, from June 1980 to September 1982, on Rattus norvegicus norvegicus in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais state, Brazil were related to seasonal period, sex of the host and area of capture. Mites and insects showed different behaviour in relation to these factors. Only the fleas and lice exhibit significant association between the rodents' infestation and the seasonal period, or between the infestation and the rodents' sex or

Epidemiology of subclinical ovine psoroptic otoacariasis in Great Britain.

Seven sheep flocks with subclinical psoroptic otoacariasis were investigated. Psoroptes species mites were isolated from 3.1 per cent of the 2676 sheep examined and the prevalence in the flocks ranged between 1.3 and 23.9 per cent, with the highest infestations in pedigree flocks. Unilateral or bilateral infestations were found in sheep of all ages. Adult and shearling rams, with prevalences of 21.5 and 14.2 per cent, respectively, were the most affected and two lambs, two and eight days old, were the youngest to be infested. There was no evidence of vertical transmission. The infestation affe

Raoiella indica (Acari: Tenuipalpidae): an exploding mite pest in the neotropics.

Major infestations of the flat mite species Raoiella indica Hirst affecting bananas, palms and other ornamental plants have been reported from the Caribbean islands, Mexico, FL (USA), Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil. Specimens from these localities were examined using traditional light microscopy and low-temperature scanning electron microscopy techniques. While little is known about the biology of this mite, its recent appearance in the Americas in both commercial coconut and banana plantations has raised concerns about its economic impact as an invasive pest.

Increased tolerance and resistance to virus infections: a possible factor in the survival of Varroa destructor-resistant honey bees (Apis mellifera).

The honey bee ectoparasitic mite, Varroa destructor, has a world-wide distribution and inflicts more damage than all other known apicultural diseases. However, Varroa-induced colony mortality is more accurately a result of secondary virus infections vectored by the mite. This means that honey bee resistance to Varroa may include resistance or tolerance to virus infections. The aim of this study was to see if this is the case for a unique population of mite-resistant (MR) European honey bees on the island of Gotland, Sweden. This population has survived uncontrolled mite infestation for over a

High infestation levels of Schizotetranychus oryzae severely affects rice metabolism.

High levels of Schizotetranychus oryzae phytophagous mite infestation on rice leaves can severely affect productivity. Physiological characterization showed that S. oryzae promotes a decrease in chlorophyll concentration and the establishment of a senescence process in rice leaves. Late-infested leaves also present high levels of superoxide radical and hydrogen peroxide accumulation, along with high levels of membrane integrity loss, which is indicative of cell death. To better understand the rice molecular responses to high levels of mite infestation, we employed the Multidimensional Protein

Outbreak of tropical rat mite (Ornithonyssus bacoti) dermatitis in a home for disabled persons.

Five mentally handicapped individuals living in a home for disabled persons in Southern Germany were seen in our outpatient department with pruritic, red papules predominantly located in groups on the upper extremities, neck, upper trunk and face. Over several weeks 40 inhabitants and 5 caretakers were affected by the same rash. Inspection of their home and the sheds nearby disclosed infestation with rat populations and mites. Finally the diagnosis of tropical rat mite dermatitis was made by the identification of the arthropod Ornithonyssus bacoti or so-called tropical rat mite. The patients w

Contagious demodicosis in three cats residing in a common household.

Three cats residing in a common household were diagnosed with dermatitis involving infestation by the unnamed species of feline demodectic mite. Food allergy subsequently was diagnosed as the primary cause of the dermatitis in two of the cats which were litter mates. In the unrelated third cat, the mite infestation was the primary cause of the dermatitis and appeared to have been contracted through contact with the other cats.

One health approach to study human health risks associated with Dermanyssus gallinae mites.

Despite the significant health risks associated with Dermanyssus gallinae infestations in humans, they are often overlooked. This study investigated a household case of D. gallinae infestation and explored the resulting clinical manifestations and risk of infection in family members. Microfluidic PCR was employed for high-throughput screening of pathogens in collected mites and blood samples from both chickens and family members. Morphological and molecular examinations confirmed the identity of the mites as D. gallinae sensu stricto (s.s.), with evidence indicating recent blood feeding. Resul

Demodex musculi in the Skin of Transgenic Mice.

Although infestations by a number of Demodex mite species have been described in mice, the occurrence of Demodex musculi infestation was last reported by Hirst in 1917. This communication describes the occurrence of D. musculi infestation in two lines of transgenic mice and their F1-hybrid offspring. We first found the Demodex mite in mouse hair samples collected during efficacy screenings in an ongoing ectoparasite treatment trial for the fur mite Radfordia affinis. An investigation was undertaken to determine the extent of the Demodex infestation within the facility and the original source o

Ectoparasites of European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) in Germany and their health impact.

BACKGROUND: The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is known for high levels of ectoparasitism that not only represents a health risk for the animals themselves, but also for pet animals and humans as hedgehogs are frequently taken into human care. In the present study, patterns of ectoparasite infestation were assessed in hedgehogs taken into care at northern German animal rehabilitation centres. METHODS: Ectoparasites (ticks, fleas and mites) of 498 hedgehogs were collected over a period of 3 years from July 2018 to May 2021. Species were identified based on morphological characteristic

Eutrombicula cochinocaensis infestation in llamas (Lama glama) in the Puna region of Argentina.

This paper aims to describe a case of trombiculosis in llamas from the Puna region of Argentina caused by Eutrombicula cochinocaensis. Trombiculosis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larval form of trombiculid mites, commonly known as chigger mites. Six adult llamas out of eighteen (33%) were infested and showed dermatitis, hyperemia, and crusts together with an orange-dotted pattern. The chigger mites were found mainly in the hind limbs and the abdomen. Microscopic identification of E. cochinocaensis was made by phase-contrast microscopy. Then, a histopathological study of the affected

Spread and strain determination of Varroa destructor (Acari: Varroidae) in Madagascar since its first report in 2010.

Varroa destructor is a major pest in world beekeeping. It was first detected in Madagascar in 2010 on the endemic honeybee Apis mellifera unicolor. To evaluate V. destructor spread dynamics in Madagascar a global survey was conducted in 2011-2012. A total of 695 colonies from 30 districts were inspected for the presence of mites. 2 years after its introduction, nine districts were found infested. Varroa destructor spread was relatively slow compared to other countries with a maximum progression of 40 km per year, the five newly infested districts being located next to the first infested ones.
