PURPOSE: Möbius syndrome is characterized by abducens and facial nerve palsy. However, the presence/absence of corresponding cranial nerves on MRI was not fully evaluated. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of Möbius syndrome by associating the presence of abducens and facial nerves on MR imagings with clinical features.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and MR imagings of nine patients with Möbius syndrome between January 2004 and October 2015. The presence/absence of abducens and facial nerves on MR imaging, as well as corresponding neuro-ophth

In 2002, the term congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs) was proposed to group heterogeneous syndromes with congenital abnormalities of ocular muscle and facial innervations. The concept of neurogenic etiology has been supported by discovery of genes that are essential to the normal development of brainstem, cranial nerves, and their axonal connections. The CCDDs include Duane retraction syndrome, congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles, Möbius syndrome, horizontal gaze palsy with progressive scoliosis, the human homeobox-related disorders, pontine cap tegmental dysplasia,

OBJECTIVE: To perform a preliminary test of a new rehabilitation treatment (FIT-SAT), based on mirror mechanisms, for gracile muscles after smile surgery.
METHOD: A pre- and postsurgery longitudinal design was adopted to study the efficacy of FIT-SAT. Four patients with bilateral facial nerve paralysis (Moebius syndrome) were included. They underwent two surgeries with free muscle transfers, one year apart from each other. The side of the face first operated on was rehabilitated with the traditional treatment, while the second side was rehabilitated with FIT-SAT. The FIT-SAT treatment include

The aim of this study was to present the functional results of treatment of neglected clubfoot in children with Moebius syndrome. A prospective analysis of seven patients with Moebius syndrome who had corrective surgery for clubfoot deformity was performed. Functional result using a modified American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) questionnaire at an average follow-up of 58 months was analysed. Five children were able to have their foot flat on the ground. Additional corrective surgery was required in eight feet. Our experience of treating neglected clubfoot deformity in children w

INTRODUCTION: Möbius syndrome typically presents as a sporadic trait with congenital facial palsy and abduction impairment. We used high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and genetic analysis to examine a family with features of Möbius syndrome.
METHODS: We examined 3 related family members having congenital complete opthalmoplegia with ptosis and facial diplegia. Orbits were imaged in quasi-coronal and sagittal planes of 2 mm thickness. Subarachnoid cranial nerves were imaged in planes of 1 mm thickness. Linkage and mutation analysis were performed to determine whether the pedigree

Moebius sequence is a rare congenital disorder usually defined as a combination of facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. A strong association of Moebius sequence with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has been suggested in earlier studies with heterogenous age groups. The primary caregivers of all children and adolescents with Moebius sequence aged 6-17 years known to the German Moebius foundation were anonymously asked to complete two screening measures of ASD [Behavior and Communication Questionnaire (VSK); Marburger Asperger's Syndrome Rating Scale (MBAS)]. For those who reach

In recent years, our understanding of the genetic foundations of incomitant strabismus has grown significantly. Much new understanding has been gleaned since the concept of congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDDs) was introduced in 2002, and the genetic basis of CCDDs continues to be elucidated. In this review, we aim to provide an update of the genetic and clinical presentation of these disorders. Disorders reviewed include Duane syndrome (DS), HOXA1 and HOXB1 syndromes, Moebius syndrome, congenital fibrosis of the extraocular muscles (CFEOM), and horizontal gaze palsy with progres

We report a new disorder with diverse neurological problems resulting from abnormal brainstem function. Consistent features of this disorder, which we propose should be called the Atabascan brainstem dysgenesis syndrome, include horizontal gaze palsy, sensorineural deafness, central hypoventilation, and developmental delay. Other features seen in some patients include swallowing dysfunction, vocal cord paralysis, facial paresis, seizures, and cardiac outflow tract anomalies. All affected children described are of Athabascan Indian heritage, with eight children from the Navajo tribe and two pat

BACKGROUND: Möbius syndrome is mainly characterized by bilateral facial palsy. Facial reanimation of these children is achieved by microsurgical techniques, namely free-gracilis muscle innervated by the masseteric nerve. Notorious commissure excursion and speech improvement are reported with such procedure. Several studies have demonstrated the presence of cortical reorganization after injury and repair of different segments of the body. Intensive training of a behaviorally relevant task is key in this process.
CASE REPORT: A 4-year-old patient with complete bilateral facial palsy secondary t

Möbius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder with the primary diagnostic criteria of congenital facial and abducent nerve palsy. Orofacial anomalies and limb malformations may be associated with the disorder. Involvement of other cranial nerves also is common. Occasionally, the V, X, XI, and XII cranial nerves are involved, resulting in difficulty of chewing, swallowing, and coughing, which often leads to respiratory complications. Mental retardation and autism have been reported in some cases. An 18-year-old Hispanic male came to the General Practice Residency clinic at the University of Ill

One third of Swedes with thalidomide embryopathy have sixth and seventh cranial nerve palsy, named Möbius syndrome/sequence, and some of them suffer from autism. Further, other patients with Möbius sequence have autism. The teratogenic effect of thalidomide on the development of different organ structures occurs early in pregnancy. By studying the birth defects, information can be obtained concerning when the damage occurred. Erroneous development of the sixth and seventh cranial nerves is induced early in pregnancy. The ensuing palsy may be associated with autism. New research is focusing on

BACKGROUND: Misoprostol exposure in the first trimester of pregnancy has been related to congenital malformations, particularly the Möbius sequence and terminal transverse limb defects.
CASES: Neuropathological findings of three patients with Möbius sequence related to misoprostol are reported. No previous pathological studies have shown these abnormalities to be associated with misoprostol exposure in utero. The brain stem was cut serially, from the rostral mesencephalum to the caudal aspect of the medulla, and all fragments were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and cresyl violet. Old ischemic

INTRODUCTION: Moebius syndrome is a rare congenital neurological disorder characterised by bilateral facial (VII) and abducens (VI) nerve palsies, resulting in facial paralysis and impaired ocular abduction. Additional cranial nerve involvement and anomalies, such as limb deformities and neurodevelopmental abnormalities, complicate its presentation. Facial reanimation using a free functional muscle transfer is the gold standard for restoring movement and improving psychosocial outcomes. This study presents over 25 years of surgical experience in facial reanimation for Moebius syndrome manageme

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Moebius sequence comprises a spectrum of brain congenital malformations predominantly affecting the function of multiple cranial nerves. Reported neuroimaging findings are heterogeneous and based on case reports or small case series. Our goal was to describe the neuroimaging findings of Moebius sequence in a large population of patients scanned with MR imaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was performed to assess brain MR imaging findings in 38 patients with Moebius syndrome studied between 2013 and 2016.
RESULTS: Retrospective analysi
