Accuracy evaluation and acceleration of Monte Carlo simulation of scattered radiation using a high-fidelity mobile X-ray fluoroscopy system model.

A high-fidelity electron-source Monte Carlo model of a mobile C-arm fluoroscopy system was developed using Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code system (PHITS) to evaluate scattered radiation and calculation acceleration. Electrons were injected into the X-ray tube target, and energy spectra, dose profiles, and scattered doses around the tube head and in the room were calculated. Simulated spectra Simulated spectra agreed with the measured spectra with a root mean square error of 0.06 or less, and the simulation-to-measurement ratios of the scattered air kerma from the electron-source simulati

A Monte Carlo simulation for evaluating hypothetical mesothelioma risk in a person exposed to talcum powder.

OBJECTIVE: Some of the varieties of talc were reported to contain a small fraction of elongate particles, including tremolite. The biological effects of tremolite were demonstrated in literature as dependent on the habit of particles (asbestiform vs. non-asbestiform). The objective of this paper is to utilize advanced methodologies of risk evaluation to determine if risk of mesothelioma could be elevated in persons utilizing talcum powder. METHODS: Monte Carlo simulation was used to calculate potency factors, cumulative exposure, and mesothelioma risk for a hypothetical scenario. RESULTS: Ex

Bayesian Uncertainty Quantification for A Fractional-Order Model of the Human Ear.

We employ the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) algorithm to estimate model parameters and quantify their uncertainties in a fractional-order lumped-element model of the human ear in a Bayesian inference framework. The model, originally developed by Naghibolhosseini and Long (2018), incorporates fractional-order elements to capture viscoelastic memory effects in ear tissues that otherwise cannot adequately be represented via conventional integer-order models. Using previously optimized model parameters to construct informative priors, we perform Bayesian parameter estimation via the No-U-Turn Samp

Monte Carlo-calculated beam-quality and perturbation correction factors for helium-, carbon-, and neon-ion beams.

PURPOSE: A new technique, multi-ion radiotherapy, which uses He, O, and Ne ions in addition to C ions, has been proposed, though there is still limited information on the dosimetric quantities, such as the beam quality and perturbation correction factors, necessary to determine the absorbed dose-to-water for various ion species. In this study, beam-quality correction factors, kQ, for He, C, and Ne ions in five types of ionization chambers were derived through Monte Carlo simulations. Additionally, perturbation effects attributed to the ionization chambers were analyzed in detail, and differenc

Chemical alteration of UO2 micro-particles in model lung systems.

Uranium dioxide (UO2) particles can be released from mines, nuclear fuel manufacturing, reactor accidents, and weapons use. They pose inhalation risks, yet their behavior in the human lung remains poorly understood. This study investigates the long-term chemical alteration and dissolution of µm-sized UO2 particles in two model lung fluids: Simulated Lung Fluid (SLF) and Artificial Lysosomal Fluid (ALF), representing extracellular and intracellular lung environments, respectively. Particles were exposed to each fluid at 37°C for up to 180 days (SLF) and 900 days (ALF). In SLF, UO2 showed low ap

Measurement uncertainty evaluation in analytical chemistry: Investigating the linearity assumption using an enhanced spreadsheet approach.

Measurement uncertainty plays an important role in conformity assessment and regulatory decision-making in analytical chemistry. Kragten spreadsheet method rely on the assumption that the measurement model is locally linear. However, many chemical measurement models that involve the ratio of input quantities may violate this assumption, leading to potential underestimation of measurement uncertainty. Understanding the impact of non-linearity, and consequently the asymmetric output distribution, is essential to ensure reliable uncertainty estimates and avoid false decisions regarding conformity

Comparison of sequential data analysis and functional data analysis for locomotor adaptation.

Learning rates for skills such as walking may depend on circumstances or time, while incentivization with punishments or rewards may affect human skill learning. We consider a state space model for dynamically changed learning rates and figure out the effect of incentivization on the learning rates by utilizing a dynamically weighted particle filter. However, estimations of model parameters, including the learning rate, require a demanding computational burden, especially when the data are collected over a long period. To overcome computational difficulty, we utilize an efficient sequential Mo

Comprehensive analysis of anatomical sites for transcutaneous bilirubin measurements in neonates using Monte Carlo multi-layered simulations.

The study utilises the Monte Carlo Multi-Layered (MCML) simulation framework to investigate the anatomical-site-specific variation in transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) measurements in neonates. Neonatal skin was modelled as a three-layered turbid medium, and simulations were conducted to evaluate the spectral reflectance response to varying concentrations of bilirubin, melanin, and blood across four anatomical sites: forehead, abdomen, palm, and sole. The findings reveal that spectral changes are most pronounced in chromophore-dependent spectral bands, particularly between 420-520 nm for bilirubi

Dosimetric characterization of a90Sr90Y Pterygium applicator with radiochromic film and Monte Carlo Simulations.

Objective.β-emitting radionuclides, such as90Sr90Y, are widely used in clinical settings for the treatment of both benign and malignant lesions, particularly as surface applicators. Despite their clinical relevance, the three-dimensional dose distributions delivered by these applicators remain inadequately characterized using Monte Carlo simulations, the current gold standard for dose calculation. This study aims to address these limitations by characterizing the three-dimensional dose distribution of a commonly used90Sr90Y Pterygium applicator. The goals include generating accurate percent-de

Mitigating Diagnostic Errors in Lung Cancer Classification: A Multi-Eyes Principle to Uncertainty Quantification.

In radiology, particularly in lung cancer diagnosis, diagnostic errors and cognitive biases pose substantial challenges. These issues, including perceptual errors, interpretive mistakes, and cognitive biases such as anchoring and premature closure, are often unnoticed by experienced radiologists. To address these challenges, we propose the Multi-Eyes principle approach, which utilises multiple deep learning models to reduce bias and potentially improve diagnostic accuracy. Inspired by the Four-Eyes principle in business and cybersecurity, this methodology employs various 3D and 2D (for validat

A torus source and its application for non-primary radiation evaluation.

Objective. Non-primary radiation doses to normal tissues from proton therapy may be associated with an increased risk of secondary malignancies, particularly in long-term survivors. Thus, a systematic method to evaluate if the dose level of non-primary radiation meets the IEC standard requirements is needed.Approach. Different from the traditional photon radiation therapy system, proton therapy systems are composed of several subsystems in a thick bunker. These subsystems are all possible sources of non-primary radiation threatening the patient. As a case study, 7 sources in the P-Cure synchro

Monte Carlo based dosimetry of extraoral photobiomodulation for prevention of oral mucositis.

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is recommended for prevention and treatment of oral mucositis, a painful condition that occurs in cancer patients. Intraoral PBMT is limited to treating distal oral mucosa and oropharynx. Extraoral PBMT may provide a more efficient intervention. The goal of this study was to develop a clinically viable protocol for extraoral PBMT. Monte Carlo modeling was used to predict the distribution of 850 nm light for four treatment sites, using anatomical data obtained from MRI and optical properties from the literature. Simulated incident light power density was limite

The effect of geometrical parameters of skin brachytherapy patch source on depth dose distribution using Monte Carlo simulation.

Brachytherapy of superficial skin tumors using beta-emitting sources is a method that has been investigated by some researchers in both simulation and experimental studies with promising results. In the current study, the effect of geometrical parameters of some relevant radionuclides including Y-90, Re-188, P-32, and Ho-166 on the depth dose distribution in skin tissue has been investigated through Monte Carlo simulation. MCNPX Monte Carlo code was employed to model the above-mentioned patch sources in cylindrical format and then the effect of patch geometrical parameters including the source

Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic comparison between generic and brand-name levofloxacin based on Monte Carlo simulation.

OBJECTIVE: Generic medications are widely used because of their low cost. However, some generic medications show lower quality and clinical efficacy compared with brand-name medications, especially for antimicrobial drugs. Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antimicrobial drug with excellent antimicrobial activity and wide antimicrobial spectrum, while it is susceptible to drug resistance. Our study aims to evaluate the bioequivalence of generic and brand-name levofloxacin. METHODS: The pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters (Cmax, AUC0∼24, Tmax, and t1/2), pharmacodynamic (PD) parameters (in vitro an

Population Pharmacokinetics of Voriconazole and Dose Optimization in Elderly Chinese Patients.

Voriconazole is commonly recommended as a first-line therapy for invasive aspergillosis infections. Elderly patients are susceptible to infectious diseases owing to their decreased physical function and immune system. Our study aims to establish a population pharmacokinetics model for elderly patients receiving intravenous voriconazole, and to optimize dosing protocols through a simulated approach. An accurate fit to the concentration-time profile of voriconazole was achieved by employing a 1-compartment model featuring first-order elimination. The typical clearance rate of voriconazole was fo

Optimization of FLASH proton beams using a track-repeating algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Radiation with high dose rate (FLASH) has shown to reduce toxicities to normal tissues around the target and maintain tumor control with the same amount of dose compared to conventional radiation. This phenomenon has been widely studied in electron therapy, which is often used for shallow tumor treatment. Proton therapy is considered a more suitable treatment modality for deep-seated tumors. The feasibility of FLASH proton therapy has recently been demonstrated by a series of pre- and clinical trials. One of the challenges is to efficiently generate wide enough dose distributions i

Fast approximate inference for multivariate longitudinal data.

Collecting information on multiple longitudinal outcomes is increasingly common in many clinical settings. In many cases, it is desirable to model these outcomes jointly. However, in large data sets, with many outcomes, computational burden often prevents the simultaneous modeling of multiple outcomes within a single model. We develop a mean field variational Bayes algorithm, to jointly model multiple Gaussian, Poisson, or binary longitudinal markers within a multivariate generalized linear mixed model. Through simulation studies and clinical applications (in the fields of sight threatening di
