Legal, ethical and moral dilemma of human cloning: the conflict between technological progress and human dignity.

Human cloning involves creating a genetically identical copy of a human cell, tissue, or embryo. That is, human reproductive cloning, producing a genetic copy of an existing person, has never been successfully done and remains globally banned or restricted. While there is no scientific evidence of successful human reproductive cloning, biotechnology combines cloning methods with genetic engineering to drive advancements in medical research and disease treatment. With the development of genetic engineering and cloning technologies, human cloning, as a possible future phenomenon, has sparked ext

Constrained endurance in long-term family caregiving: Rethinking resilience through nursing ethics.

Resilience is an established concept in family-caregiver research, where it is used to describe how caregivers maintain functioning and adapt to sustained adversity. In long-term family care for older adults with disabilities, however, resilience is ethically ambiguous. Continued care may reflect adaptive capacity, relational commitment and caregiving competence, but it may also be shaped by dependency, moral obligation, cultural expectations and limited alternatives. This article critically examines the ethical implications of caregiver resilience and develops the concept of constrained endur

Moral universe of Muslim healthcare practitioners in the UK: balancing Islamic and secular ethics in palliative and end-of-life care.

In this paper, we evaluate the ethical challenges faced by Muslim healthcare professionals (HCPs) working in palliative and end-of-life care (P&EOLC) in the UK. Aiming to contribute to an empirical foundation on which ethical support systems for religious HCPs can be built, we compare Islamic moral frameworks with the secular ethics of the NHS (National Health Service) and assess how Muslim HCPs navigate the integration of both. This qualitative study includes 76 semistructured interviews with Muslim patients, family members and a variety of Muslim and non-Muslim palliative care providers. Identity, morals, and taboos: beliefs as assets.

We develop a theory of moral behavior, individual and collective, based on a general model of identity in which people care about “who they are” and infer their own values from past choices. The model sheds light on many empirical puzzles inconsistent with earlier approaches. Identity investments respond nonmonotonically to acts or threats, and taboos on mere thoughts arise to protect beliefs about the “priceless” value of certain social assets. High endowments trigger escalating commitment and a treadmill effect, while competing identities can cause dysfunctional capital destruction. Social i

A Revised Moral Appraisal of Early Induction of Labor in Cases of Anencephaly.

The central concern of this article is whether early induction of labor for an anencephalic fetus can ever be morally justified, particularly by a Catholic healthcare ethics committee. By revisiting and refining arguments in articles by Drane (1992) and Bole (1992) published in this journal, a revised argument - consistent with the Catholic moral tradition - can seemingly be constructed that a Catholic healthcare ethics committee might use to justify early induction of labor in some pregnancies involving an anencephalic fetus. Such a revised argument depends upon two central claims; first, tha

Quiet quitting in radiography: A narrative review of causes, consequences, and solutions.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the concept of "quiet quitting" and examine its relevance to diagnostic radiography, including contributing factors, manifestations, and potential impacts on workforce sustainability and service delivery. KEY FINDINGS: Quiet quitting, defined as reduced discretionary effort while remaining in post, is increasingly recognised across healthcare but remains underexplored in radiography. Evidence suggests it is closely associated with burnout, moral injury, workforce shortages, and insufficient organisational support. In radiography, it may manifest as adherence strictly to

Moral sensibilities and moral standing: Caplan on xenograft "donors".

[I]nterest in animals as a source of organs and tissues for human beings remains strong. New developments in immunosuppression technology promise to lower the technical barriers to a routine use of nonhumans as organ donors, and the image of colonies of animals kept at the ready for supplying the growing human need for new organs seems a much more plausible scenario now than it did when broached by transplantation specialists in the Sixties. As Arthur Caplan has powerfully argued, the prospects that other sources of organs may resolve the supply problem are grim.... In the face of these "pro-x

Incentives for organ donation in the United States: feasible alternative or forthcoming apocalypse?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Several factors have generated interest in proposals to offer incentives in exchange for kidneys from living donors, including the growing shortage of available organs, the apparent asymptote of traditional means of organ procurement, and the intimate link between the inadequacies of organ procurement policies in developed countries with the flourishing of underground organ trafficking in developing countries. RECENT FINDINGS: Herein, we review the scope and dimensions of the growing shortage of organs in the United States, with attention to how each of the proposed solutio

Person-centred environments and nurses' turnover intention: examining their relationship using structural equation modelling.

BACKGROUND: A supportive practice environment is essential for nurse retention and to enable nurses to provide effective person-centred care. When nurses are prevented from acting according to their professional values, they may experience moral distress, potentially leading to disengagement and increased turnover intention. Although the impact of the practice environment on nurse outcomes is well documented, the pathways linking person-centred aspects of the practice environment to turnover intention remain underexplored. This study aimed to test a theoretical model linking these factors to i

Patients' perspectives on the derivation and use of organoids.

Organoid research is enhancing understanding of human development and diseases as well as aiding in medication development and selection, raising hopes for even more future therapeutic options. Nevertheless, this work raises important ethical issues and there is a paucity of data regarding patients' perspectives on them. We report on 60 interviews with adult patients or parents of pediatric patients from diverse disease populations who receive medical care at a major academic research institution in the United States. Interviewees expressed broad support for organoid development and use. Howev

The dynamic interplay of mourning and forgiveness in the early development of the self and psychic structure.

Mourning has received considerable attention in the psychoanalytic literature. Beginning with Freud's 1917 investigation, the central role of mourning in psychical development via identification has been articulated and subsequently elaborated upon by various authors (e.g., Klein, 1940; Schafer, 2005). Forgiveness, on the other hand, has until recently received considerably less attention, perhaps because of the strong religious and moral connotations often associated with it (Lansky, 2009a). Contemporary writers exploring the psychoanalytic implications of mourning and forgiveness, however, h

To the Edge of the Urban Landscape: Homelessness and the Politics of Care.

Homelessness is an obvious moral challenge, given the fact that it is a problem that millions of people in the developed world have to deal with on a daily basis. In the relatively scarce literature on this subject, there appear to be-roughly-three main approaches, namely, what I will refer to as the "difference approach," the "liberal approach" and the "care approach." In the paper I will critically review these three moral perspectives on the issue of homelessness. I will argue that the difference approach and the liberal approach in the end are unconvincing. Homelessness can hardly be inter

Spatial Ethics of an Imposed Euthanasia Clinic Within a Catholic Hospital Space.

Catholic healthcare institutions worldwide are under increasing pressure to participate in euthanasia-often through forced implementation rather than chosen partnership, creating ethical challenges in balancing institutional conscience and theological integrity with their obligations to serve the broader public. This paper develops an interdisciplinary spatial ethics framework of healthcare space grounded in epistemology, environmental psychology, and Catholic moral theology; it examines three spatial dimensions-operational, missional, and moral-and Catholic social teaching principles of subsi

Conscience: A Brief History.

The lived experience of human moral agency suggests that some actions favour human flourishing while others lead to division and conflict: the universal human desire for happiness is bound up with the effort to discern and do 'good' and to avoid 'evil'. Words exist to convey an experience, and the word 'conscience' has emerged as an attempt to describe the experience of moral discernment. We offer an account of the development of the word 'conscience'. Our treatment is divided into three sections: the first beginning around 600 BCE until the arrival of Christianity; the second will cover the C

Narrative Identity in Third Party Reproduction: Normative Aspects and Ethical Challenges.

In the last few decades, assisted reproduction has introduced new challenges to the way people conceive and build their families. While the numbers of donor-conceived (DC) individuals have increased worldwide, there are still many controversies concerning access to donor information. Is there a fundamental moral right to know one's genetic background? What does identity in DC families mean? Is there any relationship between identity formation and disclosure of genetic origins? These questions are addressed by analysing core regulatory discourse (ethical recommendations and codes of practice).

Governing peanuts: the regulation of the social bodies of children and the risks of food allergies.

This paper explores the way in which children with life-threatening food allergies, their parents and their public caregivers have increasingly been made subject to both projects of moral regulation and mechanism of governance aimed at the management of risk. We argue that new regulatory measures in Canada designed to significantly change the food consumption practices among children in elementary schools have three main consequences. First, they structure the relationship between ideologies of individualism and community so as to blur the distinction between the public and private dimensions

On transplanting human fetal tissue: presumptive duties and the task of casuistry.

The procurement of fetal tissue for transplantation may promise great benefit to those suffering from various pathologies, e.g., neural disorders, diabetes, renal problems, and radiation sickness. However, debates about the use of fetal tissue have proceeded without much attention to ethical theory and application. Two broad moral questions are addressed here, the first formal, the second substantive: Is there a framework from other moral paradigms to assist in ethical debates about the transplantation of fetal tissue? Does the use of fetal tissue entail cooperation in abortion? To answer thes
