Malaria risk perception, knowledge and prophylaxis practices among travellers of African ethnicity living in Paris and visiting their country of origin in sub-Saharan Africa.

An observational prospective cohort study assessed malaria risk perception, knowledge and prophylaxis practices among individuals of African ethnicity living in Paris and travelling to their country of origin to visit friends or relatives (VFR). The study compared two groups of VFR who had visited a travel clinic (TC; n=122) or a travel agency (TA; n=69) before departure. Of the 47% of VFR citing malaria as a health concern, 75% knew that malaria is mosquito-borne and that bed nets are an effective preventive measure. Perception of high malaria risk was greater in the TA group (33%) than in th

Modeling the impact of community information dissemination on the transmission dynamics of lymphatic filariasis.

The World Health Organization has underscored the importance of implementing sustained and integrated interventions to interrupt the transmission of lymphatic filariasis (LF); however, achieving this goal requires a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the disease. In this study, we propose a deterministic mathematical model to investigate the transmission and control of LF, incorporating key factors including treated and untreated individuals, community information dissemination, immature and mature mosquito populations. We fitted the LF model to data using reported LF cases in Ghana from

Malaria and Pregnancy.

Recent identification of local mosquito-borne transmission of malaria in Florida, Texas, and Maryland and increasing travel to malaria-endemic countries raise the likelihood that U.S. obstetricians might encounter a pregnant patient with malaria. Pregnancy increases the risk of becoming infected with malaria and of developing severe disease. Malaria during pregnancy also increases the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including low birth weight, pregnancy loss, and preterm birth; thus, prevention and prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential. Diagnosis can be challenging during pregnancy

Population preference of net texture prior to bed net trial in Kala-Azar-endemic areas.

Prior to a community-based efficacy trial of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) in the prevention of visceral leishmaniasis (VL; also called kala-azar), a pilot study on preference of tools was held in endemic areas of India and Nepal in September 2005.LLINs made of polyester and polyethylene were distributed to 60 participants, who used the nets sequentially for 7 d. Acceptability and preference were evaluated via indirect indicators through questionnaires at three defined time points before and after use of the LLINs and through focus group discussions (FGDs). In the latter, preferences

Old ingredients for a new recipe? Neem cake, a low-cost botanical by-product in the fight against mosquito-borne diseases.

Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) represent an important threat to millions of people worldwide, since they act as vectors for important pathogens, such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue and West Nile. Control programmes mainly rely on chemical treatments against larvae, indoor residual spraying and insecticide-treated bed nets. In recent years, huge efforts have been carried out to propose new eco-friendly alternatives, with a special focus on the evaluation of plant-borne mosquitocidal compounds. Major examples are neem-based products (Azadirachta indica A. Juss, Meliaceae) that have been prove

Pathogens spread by high-altitude windborne mosquitoes.

Recent studies have revealed that many mosquito species regularly engage in high-altitude windborne migration, but its epidemiological significance was debated. The hypothesis that high-altitude mosquitoes spread pathogens over large distances has not been directly tested. Here, we report for the first time that high-altitude windborne mosquitoes are commonly infected with arboviruses, protozoans, and helminths affecting vertebrates and humans, and provide the first description of this pathogen-vector aerial network. A total of 1,017 female mosquitoes (81.4%, N=1,249) intercepted on nets suspe

Modeling the impact of climate change on dengue transmission dynamics in Dire Dawa, Afar, and Somali, Ethiopia: an African regional perspective.

This study investigates the impacts of climate variables on dengue transmission dynamics using an advanced deterministic model that incorporates climate-related entomological parameters. Key findings indicate that temperature and rainfall significantly influence dengue transmission by affecting mosquito behavior and life cycles. Human behavior plays a key role in influencing the severity and spread of dengue amid climate change. To effectively address climate-related impacts on dengue, strategies must go beyond technological and environmental solutions and also focus on modifying behaviors rel

Reduced bioefficacy of used LLINs against natural populations of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato in the centre and east regions of Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are crucial for malaria prevention in Cameroon, yet their operational performance may be compromised because of deterioration of the physical integrity and bioefficacy of nets. This study evaluated LLINs, physical integrity, and bioefficacy following mass distribution campaigns in two regions in Cameroon: East (Bertoua) and Centre (Eyang). METHODS: Household surveys were conducted to assess ITN ownership, usage patterns, and maintenance practices. Net condition was measured using the proportionate hole index (pHI), and bio-efficacy was assess

Current vector control challenges in the fight against malaria.

The effective and eco-friendly control of Anopheles vectors plays a key role in any malaria management program. Integrated Vector Management (IVM) suggests making use of the full range of vector control tools available. The strategies for IVM require novel technologies to control outdoor transmission of malaria. Despite the wide number of promising control tools tested against mosquitoes, current strategies for malaria vector control used in most African countries are not sufficient to achieve successful malaria control. The majority of National Malaria Control Programs in Africa still rely on

Exploring alternative insecticide delivery options in a "lethal house lure" for malaria vector control.

The In2Care EaveTube is a house modification designed to block and kill malaria mosquitoes using an electrostatic netting treated with insecticide powder. A previous study demonstrated prolonged duration of effective action of insecticide-treated electrostatic netting in a semi-field setting. As part of a cluster randomized controlled trial (CRT) of the EaveTube intervention in Côte d'Ivoire, we investigated the residual efficacy of a pyrethroid insecticide deployed in EaveTubes under village conditions of use. We also explored the scope of using existing malaria control technologies including

Impact of pyriproxyfen on the reproduction of pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae s.l. populations in benin: what implications for vector control?

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of LLINs is compromised by the emergence of pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors. New insecticides that target other sites of action in the mosquito, including pyriproxyfen (PPF), are needed to maintain this efficacy. METHODS: Various populations of An. gambiae s.l. collected from April to November 2022 in 4 Beninese communes and the susceptible strain (Kisumu) were used to assess their susceptibility to PPF via CDC bottle tests and to assess the bioefficacy of Royal guard® (RG) alpha-cypermethrin + pyriproxyfen-impregnated nets via WHO cone tests. Multimodal floral cues guide mosquitoes to tansy inflorescences.

Female mosquitoes exploit olfactory, CO2, visual, and thermal cues to locate vertebrate hosts. Male and female mosquitoes also consume floral nectar that provides essential energy for flight and survival. Heretofore, nectar-foraging mosquitoes were thought to be guided solely by floral odorants. Using common tansies, Tanacetum vulgare L., northern house mosquitoes, Culex pipiens L., and yellow fever mosquitoes, Aedes aegpyti (L.), we tested the hypothesis that the entire inflorescence Gestalt of olfactory, CO2 and visual cues is more attractive to mosquitoes than floral odorants alone. Host-feeding patterns of mosquito species in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne pathogens are of growing importance in many countries of Europe including Germany. At the same time, the transmission cycles of most mosquito-borne pathogens (e.g. viruses or filarial parasites) are not completely understood. There is especially a lack of knowledge about the vector capacity of the different mosquito species, which is strongly influenced by their host-feeding patterns. While this kind of information is important to identify the relevant vector species, e.g. to direct efficient control measures, studies about the host-feeding patterns of mosquito speci

Do long-lasting insecticidal nets retain their efficacy after three years of usage in Afghanistan? Findings from a study on survivorship, physical integrity, insecticidal activity and wash resistance.

BACKGROUND: Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) are effective malaria prevention tools. However, information is limited about their durability and wash resistance in field circumstances, especially in seasonal transmission areas in South Asia. This study comprised a systematic examination of usage, physical integrity and insecticidal activity of LLINs in households in Afghanistan, three years after distribution. METHODS: In 2014, 500 households in 5 malaria endemic Afghan provinces (Balkh, Herat, Khost, Kunduz and Nangarhar) that had received LLINs (PermaNet 2.0) three years earlier were r

Risk factors of hepatitis B virus infection in children.

Hepatitis B infection (HBV) is prevalent worldwide. Overall prevalence is about 3 percent in Bangladesh. Treatments of chronic HBV infection by antiviral drugs are costly and outcome of treatment is also restricted. Therefore risk factors identification is the logical & rational approach to prevent HBV infection. This case control study aimed to find out certain risk factors related to HBV infection in children. It was conducted on patients attending the Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition and Department of Virology of BSMMU and Khidmah Hospital, Dhaka. A total of one hundred
