Health Correlates of Abuse History and Moderating Effect of Parenting Stress for Mothers with Mental Disorders.

Parenting stress is common and may lead to worsening health, particularly in the context of other risk factors such as mental disorders or a history of abuse. This study investigated how parenting-related stress impacts the effect of abuse experiences on health among mothers with mental health disorders. Survey data was analyzed from 172 predominantly Hispanic mothers receiving outpatient behavioral health services. Most (80.2%) mothers had experienced abuse. Those reporting childhood abuse had 3.82 greater odds of experiencing abuse in adulthood. Findings demonstrated worse health outcomes am

Understanding the Pathways between Mothers' Childhood Maltreatment Experiences and Patterns of Insecure Attachment with Young Children via Symptoms of Depression.

Although research has suggested that mothers who experienced childhood maltreatment tend to exhibit heightened risk for attachment difficulties with their young children, less is known about the mechanisms underlying this association. Thus, this study examined mothers' symptoms of depression as a mediator in the relationship between mothers' childhood maltreatment experiences and patterns of insecure (i.e., anxious, avoidant, and disorganized) mother-young child attachment. Mothers (N = 146) with children aged 1½-to 5-years provided ratings of their childhood maltreatment experiences, attachme

Using Bayesian methodology to explore the profile of mental health and well-being in 646 mothers of children with 13 rare genetic syndromes in relation to mothers of children with autism.

BACKGROUND: It is well documented that mothers of children with intellectual disabilities or autism experience elevated stress, with mental health compromised. However, comparatively little is known about mothers of children with rare genetic syndromes. This study describes mental health and well-being in mothers of children with 13 rare genetic syndromes and contrasts the results with mothers of children with autism. METHODS: Mothers of children with 13 genetic syndromes (n = 646; Angelman, Cornelia de Lange, Down, Fragile-X, Phelan McDermid, Prader-Willi, Rett, Rubenstein Taybi, Smith Magen

[Infection and disease caused by the human T cell lymphotropic viruses type I and II in Brazil].

HTLV-I/II infection is present in all regions of Brazil, but its prevalence varies according to the geographical area, being higher in Bahia, Pernambuco and Pará. It has been estimated that Brazil has the highest absolute number of infected individuals in the world. Blood donors screening and research conducted with special groups (indigenous population of Brazil, IV drug users and pregnant women) are the major sources of information about these viruses in our Country. HTLV-I causes adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), HTLV associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), HTLV a

Anxiety/stress among mothers living with HIV: effects on parenting skills and child outcomes.

Parental HIV infection has been associated with negative outcomes for children, and parenting skills appear to be one mechanism operating in that association. The present study focuses on the relations between maternal stress, parenting, and child functioning among families where the mother is living with HIV. Sixty-nine mothers with at least one child between six and 12 years old completed questionnaires at the baseline assessment of an intervention designed to facilitate maternal disclosure of HIV status. Respondents were assessed using multiple measures of stress/anxiety, parenting skills,

Intergenerational effects of maternal depression and co-occurring antisocial behaviors: The mediating role of parenting-related processes.

Co-occurring maternal depression and antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are associated with the development of psychopathology in children, yet little is known about risk mechanisms. In a sample of 122 racially diverse and economically disadvantaged families, we prospectively investigated (a) to what extent child socioemotional problems were related to maternal depression-only, ASPD-only, or the co-occurrence of both and (b) specificity in parenting-related mechanisms linking single-type or comorbid maternal psychopathology to child outcomes at age 3. Compared to mothers without either ASP

[The body as a third--processes of psychosomatic triangulation using the example of adolescence].

One of the earliest developmental tasks of childhood is the child's possession of its own body, which it formerly had shared with its mother, and which it more and more can experience as belonging to himself. What is called the "psychosomatic triangulation" requires the mother's internal handing over of the responsibility for its body increasingly to the child. For a while the body can play the role of a third between mother and child until in the adolescence the young person completely takes responsibility for his body. There are three ways which can lead to the development of psychosomatic s

Talking About Feelings: Mother-Child Emotion Dialogues Among Sexually Abused Children.

Mother-child dialogues about children's emotional experiences are associated with children's adaptive coping with stressful situations and mental health. Despite these findings, dialogues have not been examined yet in the context of child sexual abuse. This gap is surprising given that mother-child dialogues may particularly promote children's recovery from traumatic events. The current exploratory study examined the quality of mother-child emotion dialogues, as well as the quality of child and maternal contributions to dialogues, among dyads with sexually abused children (n = 30; 60% female;

Qualitatively Understanding Mother Fault After Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Socially constructed images of motherhood suggest that a "good" mother is caring, nurturing, and selfless-the perfect maternal figure. When these standards are not met, mother blaming (i.e., assigning fault to mothers) occurs even in child sexual abuse (CSA) cases. We collected 312 open-ended responses in total from 108 community-based participants to understand contextual factors that increase and decrease in mother fault in a CSA-related vignette depicting the mother's partner as the perpetrator. Thematic analysis revealed five main themes. Three themes were associated with decreased blame:

Microsocial analysis of dyadic interactions with toddlers and mothers with borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is known for disruptions in mother-child interaction, but possible underlying patterns of micro-behavior are barely understood. This is the first study examining behavioral dyadic synchrony-the coordinated and reciprocal adaptation of behavior-and regulation on a micro-level and relating it to macro-behavior in mothers with BPD and their toddlers. Twenty-five mothers with BPD and 29 healthy mothers participated with their 18- to 36-month-old toddlers in a frustration-inducing paradigm. Mother and toddler behavior was continuously micro-coded for gaze, affe

Qualitative insights from a randomized clinical trial of a mother-child emotional preparation program for preschool-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Early life stress and adversity conveys risk for emotional, behavioral, and developmental disorders. To address this risk in the preschool population, Mother-Child Emotional Preparation (MCEP) was tested as an in-school dyadic intervention for facilitating mother-child emotional connection through mother-child calming cycles. In a computer-generated block randomized controlled trial enrolling preschool-aged children and their mothers, in partnership with an early childhood learning center, we at Columbia University Irving Medical Center tested effects of MCEP across multiple domain

Impaired predictability: enhanced fluctuations in the parenting behaviour of mothers of pre-school children with clinical diagnoses across three different play tasks.

Fluctuations in parenting behaviour are thought to be important for the development of child psychopathology. This study focusses on fluctuations in the parenting behaviour of mothers with 3-6-year-old children with a clinical diagnosis according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 10th Revision (ICD-10) (N = 39) and compared them with a control group of mothers with children without a clinical diagnosis (N = 41). In a laboratory setting, we compared the quality of mother-child interactions between both groups using three increasingly challen

Influence of maternal dental anxiety on the child's dental caries experience.

This study assessed the influence of maternal dental anxiety-related behavior on the child's caries experience. A cross-sectional study with 608 mother-child dyads during the Children's National Immunization Campaign in Pelotas, Brazil was performed. Mothers were asked to answer a questionnaire and dental examination of the children was performed (dmft). The association assessment used Poisson regression. Children from anxious mothers were more likely to present untreated caries even after covariate adjustment. Boys, older children and low-income family children presented a higher dmft mean. P

Child maltreatment risk mediates the association between maternal and child empathy.

BACKGROUND: Empathy deficits are related to parental maltreatment, and early exposure to maltreatment is associated with later impairments in social and interpersonal skills, possibly as the result of specific deficits in cognitive and emotional empathy. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between maternal and child's emotional and cognitive empathy, and how this relationship is mediated by maltreatment risk. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: 462 mothers of 4-10 years olds (48 % girls; M = 6.51 ± 1.57) were recruited through an online platform (Prolific Inc.) during 2018. METHODS: Mothers were as

Intergenerational transmission of autobiographical memory specificity: Indirect effects through maternal reminiscing.

Mother-child reminiscing, particularly maternal sensitive guidance, fosters the development of autobiographical memory specificity (AMS) in both typically developing and maltreated children, yet little is known regarding the processes underlying individual differences in maternal reminiscing that could also relate to child AMS. Emerging evidence has shown that maternal AMS is associated with maternal sensitive guidance in typically developing dyads. We extended this research to the context of maltreatment, a risk factor for impoverished maternal sensitive guidance and reduced AMS in children.

Correlates and Predictors of Mothers' Adaptation and Trauma Symptoms Following the Unveiling of the Sexual Abuse of Their Child.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) can severely affect the mental health of children and their parents. While correlates of recovery have been documented in children, factors exacerbating parents' adaptation to their child's unveiling of CSA deserves further attention. Parents' history of abuse has been inconsistently identified as a predictor of their distress in reaction to their child's abuse disclosure. This study proposes a mediation model that explores various processes underlying mother's psychological distress (posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], dissociation, and their comorbidity) following

Family interactions in bulimia nervosa. II: Complex intrafamily comparisons and clinical significance.

This paper extends the analyses performed in part one to the area of complex intrafamily comparisons. Ratings by patients are consistently elevated compared to ratings by parents on all scales of the Family Assessment Measure (FAM), and there are significant interaction effects, which, when examined, suggest that patient scores improve while parental scores are relatively unchanged over the course of treatment in a day hospital. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed, and we attempt to clarify the role of the family therapist in the treatment of bulimia nervosa.

Impact of stress and mitigating information on evaluations, attributions, affect, disciplinary choices, and expectations of compliance in mothers at high and low risk for child physical abuse.

The objective is to know if high-risk mothers for child physical abuse differ in their evaluations, attributions, negative affect, disciplinary choices for children's behavior, and expectations of compliance. The effect of a stressor and the introduction of mitigating information are analyzed. Forty-seven high-risk and 48 matched low-risk mothers participated in the study. Mothers' information processing and disciplinary choices were examined using six vignettes depicting a child engaging in different transgressions. A four-factor design with repeated measures on the last two factors was used.

Transactional associations of health-related worries among Asian families: Evidence from six-wave longitudinal data during COVID-19.

During public health crises, family members often experience heightened health-related worry. However, little is known about how the transactional processes of such worry operate within family systems involving mother, father, and their child. To address this gap, we conducted a six-wave longitudinal survey of 303 families in China. Each month, mothers (Mage = 33.35 years) and fathers (Mage = 34.97 years) of children (Mage = 3.98 years, age range 2-7 years, 55.6% male) reported their own and their perceptions of their child's COVID-19-related health worries (e.g., infection concerns).
