Anti-CD11b antibody prevents immunopathologic changes in viable moth-eaten bone marrow chimeric mice.

The effect of in vivo treatment with anti-CD11b (MAC-1) antibody (Ab) was examined in an inflammatory disease model, the viable moth-eaten (mev) mutant mouse. The autosomal recessive mev gene occurred spontaneously as a point mutation of the hematopoietic cell protein tyrosine phosphatase in C57BL/6 mice. Homozygotes (mev/mev) develop a chronic myelomonocytic inflammation, involving accumulation of myelomonocytic cells in lungs and skin, resulting in interstitial pneumonitis and severe edema in the paws. These mice also exhibit abnormalities in lymphoid development, thymic atrophy, with T cell

Human exposure to larvae of processionary moths in France: study of symptomatic cases registered by the French poison control centres between 2012 and 2019.

CONTEXT: Contact with the setae of larvae (caterpillars) of pine or oak processionary moths could induce urticarial or allergic reactions in humans. These species are present in France and presently expanding towards highly populated areas due to climate change and/or human-mediated translocations. We aimed to describe the symptomatic cases of exposure to processionary larvae in France. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of symptomatic cases of exposure to processionary larvae registered by the French poison control centres between 1 January 2012 and 31 July 2019. We reviewed all med

Higher phylogeny of zygaenid moths (Insecta: Lepidoptera) inferred from nuclear and mitochondrial sequence data and the evolution of larval cuticular cavities for chemical defence.

Zygaenid moths are capable of releasing hydrogen cyanide in their defense by enzymatic break-down of cyanoglucosides, but only larvae of chalcosiine and zygaenine moths store cyanogenic compounds in cuticular cavities and thus are able to discharge defense droplets, which effectively deter potential predators. A previously proposed phylogeny of Zygaenidae hypothesized a sister group relationship of chalcosiine and zygaenine moths because of their similar larval defense system. Not all chalcosiine taxa possess cuticular cavities, however, and a comparable defense mechanism has been reported in

Genetic Variation Predominates Over Developmental Temperature-Induced Plasticity in Shaping Migratory Flight Capacity in the Diamondback Moth.

Insects represent the largest group of migratory animals in terms of species and biomass, yet the relative contributions of population-associated genetic differentiation and environmental plasticity to insect migration remain unclear. Here, we integrate population genomics with common garden experiments to infer the geographic origins of immigrant populations and evaluate population- and developmental-temperature-associated variation in migration-related flight traits in the diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), a major pest of cruciferous crops. Population-genomic analyses indicated that im

The genome sequence of the Sycamore-seed Pygmy moth, Ectoedemia decentella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855) van Nieukerken, 1986.

We present a genome assembly from a female specimen of Ectoedemia decentella (Sycamore-seed Pygmy; Arthropoda; Insecta; Lepidoptera; Nepticulidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 418.14 megabases. Most of the assembly (99.59%) is scaffolded into 31 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the W and Z sex chromosomes. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 15.25 kilobases.

Multiple CRISPR/Cas9 modifications of an esterase reveal its role in influencing acetate esters in the pheromone blend of a moth.

Sexual signalling by pheromones is essential for mate finding and mate choice in moths and plays an important role in reproductive isolation. Acetates (i.e., acetate esters) produced by females of Heliothis (Chloridea) subflexa Fabricius, 1777 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) attract conspecific males but repel Heliothis virescens Fabricius, 1777 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) males. A QTL (quantitative trait locus) harbouring carboxylesterases and lipases was previously shown to affect acetates, and CRISPR/Cas9-induced knockouts increased acetate amounts by blocking hydrolysis of the esters as expected. A

Autoimmune gastritis detection from preprocessed endoscopy images using deep transfer learning and moth flame optimization.

Gastric Tract Disease (GTD) constitutes a medical emergency, emphasizing the critical importance of early diagnosis and intervention to lessen its severity. Clinical practices often utilize endoscopy-supported examinations for GTD screening. The images obtained during this procedure are examined to identify the presence of the disease and investigate its severity. Autoimmune Gastritis (AIG) is a chronic inflammatory GTD and timely detection and treatment is crucial to reduce its harshness. This research aims to develop a deep-learning (DL) tool to detect the AIG from clinical-grade endoscopic

Chronic changes in developmental oxygen have little effect on mitochondria and tracheal density in the endothermic moth Manduca sexta.

Oxygen availability during development is known to impact the development of insect respiratory and metabolic systems. Drosophila adult tracheal density exhibits developmental plasticity in response to hypoxic or hyperoxic oxygen levels during larval development. Respiratory systems of insects with higher aerobic demands, such as those that are facultative endotherms, may be even more responsive to oxygen levels above or below normoxia during development. The moth Manduca sexta is a large endothermic flying insect that serves as a good study system to start answering questions about developmen

Salvia abrotanoides methanolic extract Fe3O4@Carbon nanocomposite as biological approach for protection against the Potato Tuber Moth.

Plant-based nano-insecticides like Salvia abrotanoides provide eco-friendly pest control with low resistance risk. This study aimed to evaluate the insecticidal activity of the Fe3O4 @Carbon nanoformulation of S. abrotanoides extract with a carbon shell and pure extract against Phthorimaea operculella (eggs and larvae), a significant potato pest in Iran. A modified solvothermal method produced highly water-dispersible magnetite (Fe3O4) particles, with citrate as a stabilising agent. A carbon layer was added through hydrothermal treatment, using polyethylene glycol as a linking agent between gl

Human Chondrocyte Activation by Toxins From Premolis semirufa, an Amazon Rainforest Moth Caterpillar: Identifying an Osteoarthritis Signature.

Pararamosis is a disease that occurs due to contact with the hairs of the larval stage of the Brazilian moth Premolis semirufa. Envenomation induces osteoarticular alterations with cartilage impairment that resembles joint synovitis. Thus, the toxic venom present in the caterpillar hairs interferes with the phenotype of the cells present in the joints, resulting in inflammation and promoting tissue injury. Therefore, to address the inflammatory mechanisms triggered by envenomation, we studied the effects of P. semirufa hair extract on human chondrocytes. We have selected for the investigation,

Cross-resistance, biochemical mechanism and fitness costs of laboratory-selected resistance to pyridalyl in diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella.

Pyridalyl belongs to one novel type of insecticides with uncertain mode of action, and it showed significant efficacy against Plutella xylostella, which has been considered as one notorious insect pest in the world. To characterize pyridalyl resistance in P. xylostella, one susceptible strain XY-PS and one laboratory-selected pyridalyl-resistant strain XY-PR (34.4-fold) were used to establish cross-resistance patterns, and no cross-resistance to a series of popular insecticides in the XY-PR was observed. Activities of metabolic enzymes were measured and results showed that there was an approxi

Drying soil in North China drove the outbreak range expansion of meadow moth by facilitating long-distance migration.

Studies of the mechanism underlying the range expansion of organisms have mainly focused on environmental conditions at the edges of species' distributions, potentially ignoring other possible factors. Here, we demonstrated the outbreak range expansion of meadow moth from North China to Northeast China in the past three outbreak periods. We found that the negligible infestation in Northeast China in the 1950s could not be explained by local climatic conditions. However, the soil moisture in North China decreased distinctly from 1951 to 2011 and was significantly and positively correlated with

Volatiles from apple trees infested with light brown apple moth larvae attract the parasitoid Dolichogenidia tasmanica.

The volatile compounds emitted from uninfested apple seedlings, cv. Royal Gala, and apple seedlings infested with generalist herbivore Epiphyas postvittana larvae were sampled using headspace collection and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Nine additional compounds were only detected in infested apple seedlings [including benzyl alcohol, (E)-β-ocimene, benzyl cyanide, indole, (E)-nerolidol, and four unidentified compounds]. Infested apple seedlings produced larger amounts of (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, linalool, 4,8-dimethyl-1,3(E),7-nonatriene, methyl salicylate, β-caryophyllene,

Unusual response characteristics of pheromone-specific olfactory receptor neurons in the Asian corn borer moth, Ostrinia furnacalis.

Male moth pheromone-detecting receptor neurons are known to be highly specific and very sensitive. We investigated physiological and behavioral responses to female sex pheromone components in male Ostrinia furnacalis moths (Lepidoptera: Crambidae). Using recordings from a cut-sensillum technique, trichoid sensilla could be grouped into four physiological types (1-4), according to the response of receptor neurons to the two major pheromone components, (E)-12- and (Z)-12-tetradecenyl acetate (E12- and Z12-14:OAc). These types could subsequently be characterized as four subtypes (A-D) depending o

[Sex pheromone secondary components of Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella in China. HU wenlil 2, DU].

Indian meal moth Plodia interpunctella Hübner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is considered as an important insect pest infesting stored grains and other products in China. The major sex pheromone component of P. interpunctella, Z9, E12-14: OAc (TDA), has already been identified. Though the efficiency of male capture by using the bait with this component alone is quite good, the pheromone system is far from fully understood. The identification with capillary chromatographic analysis and GC-MS methods showed that there were four main components, i. e., Z9, E12-14: OAc(A), Z9, E12-14: OH (B), Z9, E12-1

Differences in host use efficiency of larvae of a generalist moth, Operophtera brumata on three chemically divergent Salix species.

The food selection, growth, and fecundity of insect herbivores are largely dictated by the chemical composition and nutritive values of plant foliage. We studied the host-use efficiency of larvae of the generalist moth, Operophtera brumata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) on three chemically divergent but nutritively similar willows (Salix spp.). The 4th instars were able to use the salicylate-free leaves of S. phylicifolia efficiently. Growth was slightly reduced on S. pentandra, which contained a moderate level of acetylated salicylates. The high concentration of salicylates found in the leaves of

Population biology of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), in two potato cropping systems in Israel.

The life cycle, within-field distribution, crop damage and impact of natural enemies of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) were investigated in two potato cropping systems. The two systems differed in soil type (sandy vs. loess) which in turn affected the choice of cultivars, irrigation programme, insecticide application method (ground vs. aerial), and planting and harvest times. From mid-April to the end of May, almost twice as many moths were caught in pheromone traps in sandy than in loess fields. Highest infestation of tubers was found before harvest, and infestation w

A study of Krebs citric acid cycle enzymes in rice moth larvae (Corcyrace phalonica St) during mycotoxicosis.

Krebs citric acid cycle enzymes have been studied in rice moth larvae (Corcyra cephalonica St) reared in groundnut meal control and contaminated with A. flavus, wheat bran control and wheat bran contaminated with A. flavus and also wheat bran containing aflatoxin. It was observed that the activity of enzymes other than succinic oxidase, succinic dehydrogenase and isocitric dehydrogenase were reduced significantly in larvae reared in contaminated groundnut meal when compared with the control. In the case of larvae reared in contaminated wheat bran all the enzymes except succinic oxidase were in

High-contiguity genome assembly of moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia) reveals genes for disease resistance and flavonoid biosynthesis.

Moth bean (Vigna aconitifolia), a protein-rich, arid-adapted legume of considerable agronomic importance, lacks a whole genome assembly, limiting genome-enabled trait discovery and genetic improvement. In this study, we estimated its genome size using 31.28 Gb of Illumina short-read sequencing data, and a k-mer analysis (k = 21) predicted a genome size of 448.98 Mb. We generated a highly contiguous 420.3 Mb genome assembly using 37.04 Gb of PacBio HiFi long-read sequencing data, corresponding to 82.5× genome coverage. The assembly achieved a contig N50 of 22.30 Mb, with a maximum contig length
