Joint motion of bipolar hemiarthroplasty in routine hip functional movements: a dynamic motion study.

BACKGROUND: Many motion studies have shown that the inner bearing of bipolar prostheses moves less than expected under non-weight-bearing and static weight-bearing positions, which are not routine functional movements performed postoperatively. The aim of this study was to investigate the behaviours of bipolar prostheses during normal gait and simulative squatting. METHODS: Thirty-one femoral neck fracture patients were enrolled, and fluoroscopy examinations of walking on a treadmill, simulative squatting, and non-weight-bearing abduction-adduction and flexion-extension motions were performed

Self-Motion Versus Environmental-Motion Perception Following Rotational Vestibular Stimulation and Factors Modifying Them.

Motion perception following rotational vestibular stimulation is described either as a self-motion or as an environmental-motion. The purpose of the present study was to establish frequency of occurrence of both sensations in healthy humans; what other sensations they experience and how factors insinuation and visual cues modify them. Twenty-four healthy subjects were rotated with constant velocity of 80°/s in four combinations of opened and closed eyes during the rotation and after a sudden stop. After the cessation of the rotation they reported their spontaneous or insinuated illusory motion

Dynamic characteristics between the subjective score of motion sickness discomfort and video global motion.

It is well-known that visually-induced motion sickness (VIMS) is caused by image motion. Therefore it is important to clarify the relationship between image motion and the change in discomfort level. However, it is difficult to know the quick change in the level of discomfort during watching actual video image. The authors have proposed a method of interpolation for the subjective score, which has low time and quantitative resolutions, by using physiological parameters. The model which represents the change in subjective score of VIMS was expressed as multiple regression equations in which inp

Inhibition related impairments of coherent motion perception in the attention-induced motion blindness paradigm.

A striking effect of selective attention on perception of first- and second-order motion has been termed 'attention-induced motion blindness' or AMB (Sahraie et al., 2001). The AMB paradigm is based on a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) task and causes a severe transient impairment of the detection of coherent motion in a random dot kinematogram (RDK). The effect crucially depends on irrelevant motion intervals (distractors) prior to the motion target. To account for this phenomenon, both psychophysical and electrophysiological studies point to the existence of a post-perceptual gate op

Adaptation to real motion reveals direction-selective interactions between real and implied motion processing.

Viewing static pictures of running humans evokes neural activity in the dorsal motion-sensitive cortex. To establish whether this response arises from direction-selective neurons that are also involved in real motion processing, we measured the visually evoked potential to implied motion following adaptation to static or moving random dot patterns. The implied motion response was defined as the difference between evoked potentials to pictures with and without implied motion. Interaction between real and implied motion was found as a modulation of this difference response by the preceding motio

Integration of multiple motion vectors over space: an fMRI study of transparent motion perception.

Visual scenes are frequently composed of objects that move in different directions. To segment such scenes into distinct objects or image planes, local motion cues have to be evaluated and integrated according to criteria of global coherence. When several populations of coherently moving random dots penetrate each other, the visual system tends to assign them to different planes-perceived as transparent motion. This process of integration was studied by changing the angle of motion trajectories with which groups of dots penetrate each other or by varying the spatial constellation of dots movin

Extracting object motion during observer motion: combining constraints from optic flow and binocular disparity.

Detection of object motion by moving observers and perception of velocity by stationary or moving observers ordinarily require information about object distance. It might be expected that object motion could be obtained without distance by use of a combination of optic flow and binocular disparity information. We describe how object motion could, in principle, be derived this way. The analysis also permits recovery of target distance. Finally, information about the observer's motion may be obtained in a similar fashion, assuming the existence of two stationary environmental points at an unknow

Motion perception with visual prostheses.

Visual prostheses represent a groundbreaking avenue for restoring vision in individuals with visual impairments. These devices utilize electrode arrays positioned in early visual processing areas, like the retina, thalamus, or primary visual cortex. Connected to a camera, they transform a stream of video to electrical stimulation to present the visual environment through patterned activation of phosphenes. Visual prostheses offer the potential to enhance visual function and thereby quality of life for users, however, understanding and replicating motion perception in a manner akin to natural v

Outdoor Motion Capture at Scale.

Capturing kinematic data in outdoor sports is challenging, as motions span large capture volumes and occur under difficult environmental conditions. Video-based approaches, particularly with pan-tilt-zoom cameras, offer a practical solution, but the extensive manual post-processing required limits their use to short sequences and few athletes. This study presents a motion capture pipeline that automates the detection of both reference points and sport-specific keypoints to overcome this limitation. The field test employed eight cameras covering a 250×80×30 m capture volume with nearly 300 refe

Motion shapes for sound shaping.

The focus of this perspective paper is on relationships between sound-producing body motion and corresponding perceived sound features, guided by the idea of shapes as the common denominator of these two domains. The term shape is used to denote graphical-pictorial renderings of phenomena that we perceive or imagine, and may have physical manifestations as tracings on paper or on screen, or as gesticulations, or just as imagined tracings in our minds. Shapes give us intermittent snapshots of unfolding motion and sound fragments, and the point of shapes is to make ephemeral sound and motion fea

Motion sickness and visual impairment.

Motion sickness (MS) is caused by exposure to unfamiliar movements. The theory is that MS is due to a conflict between information perceived by the vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems. This study examines the role of vision in MS by comparing MS susceptibility among individuals with varying degrees of visual impairments to sighted individuals. We hypothesized that subjects with no perception of light would be less susceptible to MS than less impaired subjects, who would themselves be less susceptible than sighted subjects. To address these, the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Question

Ultrasound imaging of diaphragmatic motion.

The diaphragm is the key muscle of respiration, especially in infants. Diaphragmatic dysfunction and paralysis can have significant implications for medical management and treatment, and they can be challenging to diagnose by clinical parameters alone. Multiple imaging modalities are useful for assessing the diaphragm, but US - specifically M-mode US - offers several distinct advantages and few limitations compared to fluoroscopy, radiography, CT and MRI. The purpose of this manuscript is to discuss the pathophysiology of the diaphragm, review common indications for dynamic diaphragmatic US, d

Motion perception and its disorders.

As we live in a dynamic world, motion is a fundamental aspect of our visual experience. The advent of computerized stimuli has allowed controlled study of a wide array of motion phenomena, including global integration and segmentation, speed and direction discrimination, motion aftereffects, the optic flow that accompanies self-motion, perception of object form derived from motion cues, and point-light biological motion. Animal studies first revealed the existence of a motion-selective region, the middle temporal (MT) area, also known as V5, located in the lateral occipitotemporal cortex, foll

Intravestibular Balance and Motion Sickness.

INTRODUCTION: A theory is presented to explain the major findings regarding motion sickness and to synthetize current theories concerning its etiology. The theory proposes that an imbalance in the output of the two major organs of the labyrinth-favoring the semicircular canals over the otolith organs-is responsible for most instances of motion sickness as experienced in terrestrial and microgravity environments. METHODS: Strengths and limitations of current theories are first outlined before the different roles of the canals and otoliths in the genesis of motion sickness symptoms are describe

Motion correction in optoacoustic mesoscopy.

Raster-scan optoacoustic mesoscopy (RSOM), also termed photoacoustic mesoscopy, offers novel insights into vascular morphology and pathophysiological biomarkers of skin inflammation in vivo at depths unattainable by other optical imaging methods. Using ultra-wideband detection and focused ultrasound transducers, RSOM can achieve axial resolution of 4 micron and lateral resolution of 20 micron to depths of several millimeters. However, motion effects may deteriorate performance and reduce the effective resolution. To provide high-quality optoacoustic images in clinical measurements, we develope

Cervical spine motion during swallowing.

PURPOSE: There have been several studies regarding the relationship between deglutition and the cervical spine; however, the movement of the cervical spine during deglutition has not been specifically studied. The purpose of the present study was to clarify how the cervical spine moves during normal deglutition. METHODS: We conducted videofluorography in 39 healthy individuals (23 men; 16 women; mean age, 34.3 years) with no evidence of cervical spine disease and analyzed images of the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing using an image analysis technique. Analyzed sections included the o

Retinal adaptation to object motion.

Due to fixational eye movements, the image on the retina is always in motion, even when one views a stationary scene. When an object moves within the scene, the corresponding patch of retina experiences a different motion trajectory than the surrounding region. Certain retinal ganglion cells respond selectively to this condition, when the motion in the cell's receptive field center is different from that in the surround. Here we show that this response is strongest at the very onset of differential motion, followed by gradual adaptation with a time course of several seconds. Different subregio
