Utilizing Motion Capture Systems for Instrumenting the OCRA Index: A Study on Risk Classification for Upper Limb Work-Related Activities.

In the search to enhance ergonomic risk assessments for upper limb work-related activities, this study introduced and validated the efficiency of an inertial motion capture system, paired with a specialized platform that digitalized the OCRA index. Conducted in a semi-controlled environment, the proposed methodology was compared to traditional risk classification techniques using both inertial and optical motion capture systems. The inertial method encompassed 18 units in a Bluetooth Low Energy tree topology network for activity recording, subsequently analyzed for risk using the platform. Pri

Using an Affordable Motion Capture System to Evaluate the Prognostic Value of Drop Vertical Jump Parameters for Noncontact ACL Injury.

BACKGROUND: Knee kinematic parameters during a drop vertical jump (DVJ) have been demonstrated to be associated with increased risk of noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. However, standard motion analysis systems are not practical for routine screening. Affordable and practical motion sensor alternatives exist but require further validation in the context of ACL injury risk assessment. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: To prospectively study DVJ parameters as predictors of noncontact ACL injury in collegiate athletes using an affordable motion capture system (Kinect; Microsoft). We hypothes

Agreement and Repeatability of a Smartphone-Based Markerless System (OpenCap) Versus Marker-Based Motion Capture During Treadmill Walking and Running.

Marker-based motion capture is the gold standard for 3-dimensional gait analysis but is expensive and largely confined to specialized laboratories. Smartphone-based markerless tools such as OpenCap could scale gait assessment, yet their validity and repeatability during treadmill walking and running remain unclear. We evaluated agreement and within-session repeatability between OpenCap and motion capture during treadmill walking (4 km·h-1) and running (8 and 14 km·h-1) in 10 healthy adults, recorded simultaneously with both systems. We computed spatiotemporal variables, sagittal hip/knee/ankle

A fatigue failure framework for the assessment of highly variable low back loading using inertial motion capture - a case study.

Workers in manufacturing settings experience highly variable musculoskeletal loading, which current risk assessment methods often fail to fully capture. This study evaluated a Fatigue Failure-Based framework for estimating continuous lumbar loading from variable occupational loads. Worker movements and postures were recorded using Inertial Motion Capture technologies, and L5/S1 joint loading history was estimated through inverse dynamics. Stress cycles were analysed using Rainflow analysis, adjusted with Goodman's method, and summed using Palmgren-Miner rule to estimate cumulative damage. The

Vertical Jump Height Estimation Using Low-Sampling IMU in Countermovement Jumps: A Feasible Alternative to Motion Capture and Force Platforms.

Vertical jump height from a countermovement jump is a widespread metric to assess the lower limb functionality. Motion capture systems and force platforms are considered gold standards to estimate vertical jump height; however, their use in ecological settings is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of low-sampling-rate inertial measurement units as an alternative to the gold standard systems. The validity of three computational methods for IMU-based data-numerical double integration, takeoff velocity, and flight time-was assessed using data from 18 healthy participants who pe

Biomechanics Analysis of the Firefighters' Thorax Movement on Personal Protective Equipment during Lifting Task Using Inertial Measurement Unit Motion Capture.

Back injury is a common musculoskeletal injury reported among firefighters (FFs) due to their nature of work and personal protective equipment (PPE). The nature of the work associated with heavy lifting tasks increases FFs' risk of back injury. This study aimed to assess the biomechanics movement of FFs on personal protective equipment during a lifting task. A set of questionnaires was used to identify the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain experienced by FFs. Inertial measurement unit (IMU) motion capture was used in this study to record the body angle deviation and angular acceleration of FF

A 3D motion capture analysis of a giving-way ankle episode during a 180-degree pivot turn: A case report.

Lateral ankle sprains are highly prevalent during sporting activities, as it accounts for approximately 60% of all athletic injuries. There is currently a paucity of research which provides kinetic and kinematic assessments of sprains and giving-way episodes of the ankle joint. The aim of this case study was to examine the kinetics and kinematics of the ankle and knee during a giving-way episode in a female ice hockey player during a 180-degree pivot turn, which was conducted in a 3D motion capture laboratory. Three trials were conducted on this participant (one accident trial, two control tri

Validity and reliability of the single camera marker less motion capture system using RGB-D sensor to measure shoulder range-of-motion: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The range-of motion (ROM) is an essential component of joint mobility. Shoulder ROM measurement has been problematic due to its complexity. A marker less motion capture system can be a potential alternative for upper limb assessment. Currently, there is no systematic review to evaluate the validity of a marker less motion capture system for assessing shoulder ROM. This study aims to describe methods to evaluate the reliability and validity of a single camera marker less motion capture system that uses an RGB-depth sensor to measure shoulder ROM. METHODS: Studies that measured shou

Towards Clinical Application of Enhanced Timed up and Go With Markerless Motion Capture and Machine Learning for Balance and Gait Assessment.

Balance and gait impairments play a key role in falls among the elderly. Traditional clinical scales such as the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) to assess fall risk are often subjective, time consuming, and do not assess gait performance. Shorter assessments such as Timed Up and Go (TUG) are available, but most clinicians only look into the completion time. This study aimed to develop a fast, low-cost, and automated framework for balance function assessment and comprehensive gait analysis by enhancing the traditional TUG test with a markerless motion capture (MoCap) system and machine learning models

An ab initio study and machine learning framework to capture the motional effects in solid-state NMR of lithium-ion conductors.

Solid-state NMR spectroscopy, when combined with first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations, offers a highly sensitive probe of atomic-scale structure and dynamics in solid-state ion conductors, enabling the characterisation of subtle features that govern ionic conductivity. However, current approaches for interpreting NMR spectra rely on a comparison with static DFT reference calculations, which are inadequate for materials exhibiting fast ion dynamics such as lithium battery solid electrolytes. Here, using room-temperature NMR measurements and first-principles calculations

Upper limb kinematic measurement using markerless motion capturing (MMC) in stroke survivors: A cross-sectional experimental study.

INTRODUCTION: Markerless motion capture (MMC) technology has emerged as a clinical tool to assess the physical performance of patients. This study evaluates: (a) differences in upper limb joint angles between stroke survivors with different functional levels and their healthy counterparts in controlled indoor and uncontrolled outdoor environments; and (b) the relationship between the kinematic information obtained by the MMC system and the scores of manual motor assessments. METHODS: A customized MMC system using an iPad Pro captured the participants' movements. Stroke survivors underwent thr

Sonomyography accurately captures joint kinematics during volitional and electrically stimulated motion in healthy adults and an individual with cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant advances in biosignal extraction techniques for studying neuromotor disorders, there remains an unmet need for a method that effectively links muscle structure and dynamics to muscle activation. Addressing this gap could improve the quantification of neuromuscular impairments and pave the way for precision rehabilitation. In this study, we demonstrate the proof of concept of recording multimodal signals from the brain, muscles, and resulting limb kinematics. We also explore the use of ultrasound imaging to extract limb kinematics. METHODS: We collected data fro

Optimal assessment of upper body motion - Which and how many landmarks need to be captured for representing rigid body orientation?

In biomechanical studies, the thorax is often considered rigid. Since it's a well-known simplification, usually more than three markers are used to describe its movement in motion analyses. However, there is uncertainty about how many markers are advisable and which landmarks should be used. The results of the present study describe the expected error depending on the number of markers used. Furthermore, a recommendation is given for the landmarks with the least errors. This recommendation is valid for men and women as well as for different movements. The recommendations roughly reduce the err

Markerless motion capture systems as training device in neurological rehabilitation: a systematic review of their use, application, target population and efficacy.

BackgroundClient-centred task-oriented training is important in neurological rehabilitation but is time consuming and costly in clinical practice. The use of technology, especially motion capture systems (MCS) which are low cost and easy to apply in clinical practice, may be used to support this kind of training, but knowledge and evidence of their use for training is scarce. The present review aims to investigate 1) which motion capture systems are used as training devices in neurological rehabilitation, 2) how they are applied, 3) in which target population, 4) what the content of the traini

Evaluating the Agreement of Markerless Motion Capture for Joint Angle Estimation in a Constrained Hallway Setting Compared With a Traditional Laboratory Setting.

Gait analysis is a valuable approach for understanding human movement, but the space and setup requirements of traditional marker-based systems can limit their use outside specialized laboratories. Markerless motion capture may provide a more flexible option, though its agreement in constrained environments compared with traditional spaces is not well established. This study compared a 10-camera markerless system deployed in a hallway with a traditional 8-camera laboratory setup. Twenty-five healthy adults (15 females, 10 males; age 34 [16] y) completed quiet standing, 60 seconds of self-selec

Validation of a Sensorized Forearm Crutch for Quantifying Partial Weight-Bearing During Assisted Gait Using Optical Motion Capture and Instrumented Treadmill.

Human gait analysis is a key component of rehabilitation medicine, enabling objective assessment of patient recovery. In crutch-assisted locomotion, however, conventional forearm crutches operate as passive devices, providing no quantitative information on load distribution or patient adherence to partial weight-bearing (PWB) prescriptions. This work presents the design and dynamic validation of a sensorized forearm crutch system for biomechanical monitoring during assisted gait. The proposed device combines a force-sensing module based on a full Wheatstone bridge strain-gauge configuration wi
