The flash-lag effect and motion perception timing: a framework grounded in a proposed biophysical mechanism for perception as a first-person property.

The flash-lag effect (FLE), a dissociation between physical events and their perceived time and location, has an unresolved neural basis. Here, the FLE is re-examined within the semblance hypothesis, in which perception, a first-person property, arises from the rapid formation and reversal of inter-postsynaptic functional LINKs (IPLs). A novel, unpredictable stimulus such as a flash is hypothesized to require de novo IPL formation, with perceptual latency Tpercept(flash) ≈ 70-100 ms. Predictable, continuously tracked motion is instead hypothesized to reactivate IPLs formed at motion onset, wit

Motion matters: visual perception and motor functioning in children and youths with spastic cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Vision plays a crucial role in guiding and anticipating movements. In individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), a condition characterized by disorders of movement and posture attributed to disturbances of the developing brain, Cerebral Visual Impairments (CVI) are common. CVI involves difficulties with organizing and interpreting visual information. Gait alterations and activity limitations in children with CP such as reduced; walking speed, step length, and motor skill performance, may be over-attributed to the motor and musculoskeletal disorders. Knowledge of how visual perception in

Muscle Spindle Model-Based Non-Invasive Electrical Stimulation for Motion Perception Feedback in Prosthetic Hands.

Prosthetic hands offer significant benefits for patients with hand amputations by partially replicating the function of real hands. However, most current prosthetics lack sensory feedback on movement, leading to a gap in proprioception for users. To bridge this gap and approximate the natural experience of hand use, prosthetic hands must offer detailed motion feedback. This paper introduces a non-invasive electrical stimulation approach, which can provide motion perception feedback through modeling muscle spindles. By employing transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), the method gen

Sub- and Supra-Second Duration Perception of Implied Motion: Differences Between Athletes and Non-Athletes.

This study aimed to investigate the differences in duration perception between athletes and non-athletes when looking at implied motion images within sub- and supra-second time ranges. By adopting the temporal bisection method, the study analyzed the duration perception of 20 college student athletes and 20 non-athletes regarding the implied motion of daily life (running and walking) and static postures (standing). The results showed that the effect of movement posture was significant, i.e., the perceived duration of the implied motion posture was longer than that of the static posture. Specif

Transcranial Random Noise Stimulation Boosts Early Motion Perception Learning Rather than the Later Performance Plateau.

The effect of transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) on visual perceptual learning has only been investigated during early training sessions, and the influence of tRNS on later performance is unclear. We engaged participants first in 8 days of training to reach a plateau (Stage 1) and then in continued training for 3 days (Stage 2). In the first group, tRNS was applied to visual areas of the brain while participants were trained on a coherent motion direction identification task over a period of 11 days (Stage 1 + Stage 2). In the second group, participants completed an 8-day training pe

Beyond Reading Modulation: Temporo-Parietal tDCS Alters Visuo-Spatial Attention and Motion Perception in Dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder with an atypical activation of posterior left-hemisphere brain reading networks (i.e., temporo-occipital and temporo-parietal regions) and multiple neuropsychological deficits. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a tool for manipulating neural activity and, in turn, neurocognitive processes. While studies have demonstrated the significant effects of tDCS on reading, neurocognitive changes beyond reading modulation have been poorly investigated. The present study aimed at examining whether tDCS on temporo-parietal regions affected not only

Visual motion perception improvements following direct current stimulation over V5 are dependent on initial performance.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can improve visual perception. However, the effect of tDCS on visual perception is largely variable, possibly due to individual differences in initial performance. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the dependency of visual motion perception improvements on initial performance. Twenty-eight observers were randomly divided into two groups. Anodal tDCS and sham stimulation were separately applied to V5 (1.5 mA, 20 min), while observers performed a coherent motion direction identification task. The results showed that compared to sham stim

Globally Normal Bistable Motion Perception of Anisometropic Amblyopes May Profit From an Unusual Coding Mechanism.

Anisometropic amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental disorder of the visual system. There is evidence that the neural deficits spread across visual areas, from the primary cortex up to higher brain areas, including motion coding structures such as MT. Here, we used bistable plaid motion to investigate changes in the underlying mechanisms of motion integration and segmentation and, thus, help us to unravel in more detail deficits in the amblyopic visual motion system. Our results showed that (1) amblyopes globally exhibited normal bistable perception in all viewing conditions compared to the control

Low- and high-level motion perception deficits in anisometropic and strabismic amblyopia: evidence from fMRI.

Maximum motion displacement (Dmax) is the largest dot displacement in a random-dot kinematogram (RDK) at which direction of motion can be correctly discriminated [Braddick, O. (1974). A short-range process in apparent motion. Vision Research, 14, 519-527]. For first-order RDKs, Dmax gets larger as dot size increases and/or dot density decreases. It has been suggested that this increase in Dmax reflects greater involvement of high-level feature-matching motion mechanisms and less dependence on low-level motion detectors [Sato, T. (1998). Dmax: Relations to low- and high-level motion processes.

Neuromagnetic activity in medial parietooccipital cortex reflects the perception of visual motion during eye movements.

We usually perceive a stationary, stable world despite coherent visual motion induced by eye movements. This astonishing example of perceptual invariance results from a comparison of visual information with internal reference signals (nonretinal signals) predicting the visual consequences of an eye movement. The important consequence of this concept is that our subjective percept of visual motion reflects the outcome of this comparison rather than retinal image slip. To localize the cortical networks underlying this comparison, we compared magnetoencephalography (MEG) responses under two condi

The selective impairment of the perception of first-order motion by unilateral cortical brain damage.

First-order (Fourier) motion consists of stable spatiotemporal luminance variations. Second-order (non-Fourier) motion consists instead of spatiotemporal modulation of contrast, flicker, or spatial frequency. In spite of extensive psychophysical and computational analysis of the nature and relationship of these two types of motion, it remains unclear whether they are detected by the same mechanism or whether separate mechanisms are involved. Here we report the selective impairment of first-order motion, on a range of local and global motion tasks, in the contralateral visual hemifield of a pat

The Aubert-Fleischl phenomenon: a temporal frequency effect on perceived velocity in afferent motion perception.

Apparent velocities of moving visual stimuli are known to be different depending on whether the subject pursues the stimulus (efferently controlled motion perception) or whether the eye is stationary and the image moves across the retina (afferent motion perception). Afferent motion perception of a periodic pattern or a moving single object causes overestimation of velocity (magnitude estimations) as compared to smooth pursuit. This socalled Aubert-Fleischl phenomenon is shown to depend on local temporal frequency stimulation on the retina caused by the repetitive passage of contrast borders o

Perception of distance during self-motion depends on the brain's internal model of the terrain.

The body's geometrical relationship with the terrain is important for depth perception of human and non-human terrestrial animals. Static human observers in the dark employ the brain's internal model of the terrain, the intrinsic bias, to represent the ground as an allocentric reference frame for coding distance. However, it is unknown if the same ground-based coding process operates when observers walk in a cue-impoverished environment with visible ground surface. We explored this by measuring human observers' perceived locations of dimly-lit targets after a short walk in the dark from the ho

Differences in biological motion perception associated with hearing status and age of signed language exposure.

This study investigates how American Sign Language (ASL) fluency and hearing status influence the perception of biological motion, using three point-light display (PLD) tasks. Prior research indicates that early exposure to ASL among deaf signers results in more rapid and effortless recognition of biological motion than hearing nonsigners, potentially due to the expertise in deciphering complex human movements or possibly due to neuroplasticity in deaf brains. However, it remains uncertain whether this advantage stems from signed language proficiency or the experience of being deaf. To explore

Effect of Standardized Yelling on Subjective Perception and Autonomic Nervous System Activity in Motion Sickness.

This study investigated the effects of yelling intervention on symptoms and autonomic responses in motion sickness. Forty-two healthy participants were recruited, and they participated in Coriolis stimulation, a technique for inducing motion sickness. The experimental procedure comprised five 1-min rotating stimuli with 1-min rest after each stimulus. Then, the symptom severity was assessed using the Motion Sickness Symptom Rating (MSSR). The d2 Test of Attention scores and cardiovascular responses were recorded before and after Coriolis stimulation. The electrocardiogram results were document

Apparent motion perception in lower limb amputees with phantom sensations: "obstacle shunning" and "obstacle tolerance".

Phantom limbs are the phenomenal persistence of postural and sensorimotor features of an amputated limb. Although immaterial, their characteristics can be modulated by the presence of physical matter. For instance, the phantom may disappear when its phenomenal space is invaded by objects ("obstacle shunning"). Alternatively, "obstacle tolerance" occurs when the phantom is not limited by the law of impenetrability and co-exists with physical objects. Here we examined the link between this under-investigated aspect of phantom limbs and apparent motion perception. The illusion of apparent motion

Motion-generated optical information allows event perception despite blurry vision in AMD and amblyopic patients.

Events consist of objects in motion. When objects move, their opaque surfaces reflect light and produce both static image structure and dynamic optic flow. The static and dynamic optical information co-specify events. Patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and amblyopia cannot identify static objects because of weakened image structure. However, optic flow is detectable despite blurry vision because visual motion measurement uses low spatial frequencies. When motion ceases, image structure persists and might preserve properties specified by optic flow. We tested whether optic flo

A selective impairment of perception of sound motion direction in peripheral space: A case study.

It is still an open question if the auditory system, similar to the visual system, processes auditory motion independently from other aspects of spatial hearing, such as static location. Here, we report psychophysical data from a patient (female, 42 and 44 years old at the time of two testing sessions), who suffered a bilateral occipital infarction over 12 years earlier, and who has extensive damage in the occipital lobe bilaterally, extending into inferior posterior temporal cortex bilaterally and into right parietal cortex. When brain damage "improves" perception: neglect patients can localize motion-shifted probes better than controls.

When we look at bars flashed against a moving background, we see them displaced in the direction of the upcoming motion (flash-grab illusion). It is still debated whether these motion-induced position shifts are low-level, reflexive consequences of stimulus motion or high-level compensation engaged only when the stimulus is tracked with attention. To investigate whether attention is a causal factor for this striking illusory position shift, we evaluated the flash-grab illusion in six patients with damaged attentional networks in the right hemisphere and signs of left visual neglect and six age
