Congenital alveolar synechiae - a case report.

Congenital alveolar synechiae is rarely seen as an isolated disease. It is generally observed together with various syndromes such as Van der Woude and cleft palate lateral alveolar synechiae syndrome, and is concomitant with other anomalies in the maxillofacial or other regions of the body. Prior to this case report , eight cases of isolated congenital alveolar synechiae have been reported. This paper reports a case of isolated congenital alveolar synechiae in a 10-month-old baby girl. The report concentrates on the clinical features of isolated congenital alveolar synechiae, the likely aetio

Temporomandibular joint bilateral post-traumatic ankylosis: a report of a case treated with interpositional arthroplasty.

Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a severe disorder which leads to jaw function impairment and restricted mouth opening. The surgical approach to TMJ ankylosis can be performed according to different techniques. The present paper is a report of a bilateral post-traumatic case of TMJ ankylosis. The patient suffered bilateral condylar fractures as a consequence of a road accident and showed a limited mouth opening (22 mm) along with dental occlusion abnormalities. Conservative treatments were uneffective to improve jaw impairment, so a computerized tomography was requested for su

[Therapeutic maxillary expansion].

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of rapid maxillary expansion on nasal airflow studies and mouth breathing habit. 15 children aged from 5 to 12 years underwent rapid palatal expansion for orthodontic abnormalities. Otolaryngologic evaluation, computerized active anterior rhinomanometric measurements and oral myo-functional disorder examination were obtained before treatment, 2 months after expansion and after a retention period of approximately 10/12 months. Based on this multidisciplinary judgment and confirmed by the rhinomanometric values two groups could be distinguished

Life-threatening anoxic spells caused by tracheal compression after repair of esophageal atresia: correction by surgery.

Three infants who developed anoxic spells 2, 5, and 20 mo following repair of esophageal atresia developed apneic spells during or within a few minutes of feeding. These episodes began with stridor and cyanosis; when severe, they progressed to apnea and loss of consciousness. Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was often necessary. Investigations failed to detect esophageal obstruction and/or a recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula. No neurologic or cardiac abnormalities were found. The cause was compression of a 1- to 3-cm segment of trachea anteriorly by a vascular structure and posteriorly by a dila

Variabilities in prenatal development of orofacial system.

Reliable information on embryonic and fetal development of the human oro-facial system is meager. Much of the data available at present is not entirely reliable, because it was derived from a small number of specimens. An embryological approach with human materials is important for establishing a normal standard of development including individual variabilities as well as clarifying the embryogenesis and etiology of defective development (Nishimura et al. 1977). It is important in human craniofacial embryology to know the variabilities, that is, individual differences in developmental phenomen

A new surgical approach to treatment of bilateral syngnathia in a patient with popliteal pterygium-syndrome.

This case describes the treatment of syngnathia with a popliteal-pterygium syndrome. Although short-term successful surgical treatment has been described in literature, long-term follow up is essential, as the mouth opening limitations can be repetitively reoccurring. This requires new, individual treatment strategies as demonstrated in this case. A young patient is shown, who is successfully undergoing an alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement to improve mouth opening, increasing the posterior airway space and facilitating the food intake.

Reversible esophageal motor dysfunction in botulism.

Two cases of botulism with autonomic and neuromuscular system involvement are presented. In both patients, dryness of the mouth and difficulties in swallowing were predominant symptoms. Esophageal manometry revealed a marked decrease in peristaltic amplitude, which was most pronounced in the upper third of the esophagus. These functional abnormalities returned to normal following recovery from the acute disease.

Influence of mouth breathing on the dentofacial growth of children: a cephalometric study.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of mouth breathing, facial, and structural growth alterations, especially during childhood has been discussed in medical and dental literature. The relevance of airway obstruction and its assumed effect on facial growth continues to be debated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was aimed at assessing the dental and soft tissue abnormalities in mouth breathing children with and without adenoid hypertrophy. Fifty children aged between 6 and 12 years following otolaryngological examination were divided into three groups: Group I (MBA): Twenty mouth breathing children

Oculo-Dento-Digital Dysplasia (ODDD) Due to a GJA1 Mutation: Report of a Case with Emphasis on Dental Manifestations.

Oculo-dento-digital dysplasia (ODDD) is a congenital disorder manifesting with multiple phenotypic abnormalities involving the face, eyes, teeth, and limbs in addition to neurologic symptomatology. This report aims to present a female patient with ODDD who was referred due to extensive oral restorative needs. The presence of hypoplastic enamel triggered further evaluation. Characteristic facies with hypoplastic alae nasi and syndactyly offered greater insight into the phenotype of the syndrome. Clinical suspicion was confirmed by genetic sequencing revealing heterozygous mutation in GJA1. It i

Oralfacialdigital-like syndrome with respiratory tract symptoms from birth and ultrastructural centriole/basal body disarray.

UNLABELLED: A girl with polydactyly has had respiratory tract problems, including atelectasis, since birth. She has a high arched palate, a tongue hamartoma and dysmorphic face. Electron microscopy of nasal and bronchial brush biopsies repeatedly revealed centriole/basal body disarray and extreme sparseness of cilia. At the age of 2 years and 11 months, she displayed retardation of both motor and mental skills. CONCLUSION: The manifestations tally with a ciliopathy, partly with the Bardet--Biedl syndrome (BBS) but especially with the oralfacialdigital syndrome (OFDS); however, with the additi
