BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The monkeypox (mpox) virus was endemic to some African countries that have recently spread worldwide creating multicountry outbreaks outside of Africa. This most current mpox outbreak is caused by a variety of factors. However, there are some conflicting ideas and pejorative claims about this. Therefore, we conducted this narrative review to highlight the associations of mpox infection with sexual orientations and encounters and to break the misconception about mpox.
METHODS: To find pertinent information and data, we searched Google, Google Scholar, and PubMed. The resul

INTRODUCTION: Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by brick-shaped enveloped monkeypox (Mpox) virus that belongs to the family of ancient viruses known as Poxviridae. Subsequently, the viruses have been reported in various countries. The virus is transmitted by respiratory droplets, skin lesions, and infected body fluids. The infected patients experience fluid-filled blisters, maculopapular rash, myalgia, and fever. Due to the lack of effective drugs or vaccines, there is a need to identify the most potent and effective drugs to reduce the spread of monkeypox. The current study aimed to use

Since May 2022, the multi-country outbreak of monkeypox (mpox) has raised a great concern worldwide. Early detection of mpox virus infection is recognized as an efficient way to prevent mpox transmission. Mpox specific detection methods reported up to now are based on the SNPs among mpox virus and other orthopoxviruses. We have therefore developed a real-time PCR based mpox detection method targeting mpox virus specific sequences (N3R and B18Rplus). We have also optimized an orthopoxvirus detection system which targets the highly conserved E9L and D6R genes. The mpox and orthopoxvirus real-tim

Monkeypox (mpox), a virus belonging to the orthopoxvirus family, can cause a zoonotic infectious disease with morbidity and cosmetic complications. Therefore, effective antiviral drugs with appropriate safety profiles are important for the treatment of patients with mpox. To date, there is no FDA-approved drug for the treatment of mpox. However, tecovirimat, brincidofovir, and cidofovir are the candidate therapies for the management of mpox. Given the safety concerns following the use of these medications, we aimed to review evidence on the clinical considerations of mpox antiviral medications

Although monkeypox (mpox) has been endemic in Western and Central Africa for 50 years, it has not received sufficient prophylactic and therapeutical attention to avoid evolving into an epidemic. From January 2022 to January 2023, more than 84,000 of mpox cases were reported from 110 countries worldwide. Case numbers appear to be rising every day, making mpox an increasing global public health threat for the foreseeable future. In this perspective, we review the known biology and epidemiology of mpox virus, together with the latest therapeutic options available for mpox treatment. Further, smal

Mpox, caused by infection with Monkeypox virus, usually presents as a mild, self-limited illness in immunocompetent persons that resolves within 2-4 weeks. Serious complications have been reported when mpox lesions involve vulnerable anatomic sites, such as the eye, and in those with substantial immunosuppression. We describe a patient with advanced human immunodeficiency virus infection and sustained viral shedding of mpox with ocular involvement, which resulted in vision loss.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) has garnered global attention in recent years. MPXV is a DNA virus that is categorized as belonging to the Orthopoxvirus, exhibiting close genetic and structural similarities to variola virus (VARV) and vaccinia virus (VACV). Despite the World Health Organization (WHO) announcing in 2023 that the global outbreak of monkeypox (mpox) is no longer a public health emergency, the new occurrence reported in most regions shows the urgency of the development of medicines for mpox. In this review, we reviewed a huge amount of literature on mpox, summarizing its development, scien

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) has gained interest because of a multicountry outbreak of mpox (formerly monkeypox) cases with no epidemiologic link to MPXV-endemic regions. We sequenced the complete genome of MPXV isolated from a patient in northern Mexico. Phylogenetic analysis grouped the virus with isolates from Germany.

Monkeypox virus (MPXV) is the causative agent of mpox, a zoonosis formerly known as monkeypox. MPXV can be divided into clades I and II, which are further divided into subclades Ia, Ib, IIa, and IIb. Since May 2022, subclade IIb MPXV has rapidly spread outside Africa to more than 100 countries due to increased human-to-human transmission. Clade I is a more virulent MPXV endemic in Central Africa with up to 10% mortality in humans. Clade I has recently evolved into a novel subclade Ib and caused outbreaks in non-endemic neighboring countries and other continents. In response to mpox, the World

Monkeypox (mpox) is a disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus, which was previously endemic in Africa and has been reported in numerous countries on other continents since 2003. Clinically, patients initially present with lymphadenopathy and flu-like prodromal symptoms, followed by a generalized rash. Mpox infection is also associated with several health complications, including pneumonia, sepsis, encephalitis, and ocular damage. Treatment is primarily symptomatic and involves relieving pain and fever, managing skin lesions, and administering antibiotics for secondary infections.

Monkeypox (Mpox) is a zoonotic disease caused by a virus (monkeypox virus-MPV) belonging to the Poxviridae family. In humans, the disease has an incubation period of 5-21 days and then progresses in two phases, the prodromal phase and the rash phase. The prodromal phase is characterized by non-specific symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, malaise, lymphadenopathy, headache, and chills. Skin lesions appear in the rash phase of the disease. These lesions progress through different stages (macules, papules, vesicles, and pustules). In May 2022, WHO reported an outbreak of human Mpox in several co

Monkeypox (Mpox) is an infectious disease that can spread through physical contact or from infected animals and has historically been endemic to Africa, with major outbreaks recorded in 2022. More recently, it has spread worldwide, becoming a significant public health concern. Early detection, robust surveillance, and effective contact tracing are essential for controlling the spread of Mpox. In response, various approaches have been proposed for early detection; however, most existing methods lack both efficiency and high accuracy, making them less suitable for deployment on edge devices. We describe a case of mpox characterized by a circularly distributed facial rash but no identified risk factors. Fomite transmission of monkeypox virus from contaminated linen at a massage spa was suspected. Clinicians should consider mpox in patients with consistent clinical syndromes, even in the absence of epidemiologic risk factors.

As of November 9, 2022, a total of 28,730 cases of monkeypox (mpox) had been reported in the United States,* primarily among adult cisgender men reporting recent male-to-male sexual contact (1). Transgender and gender-diverse persons, who constitute an estimated 0.5% of the U.S. adult population,† face unique health disparities and barriers to care (2-4). However, data on the epidemiologic and clinical features of Monkeypox virus infections in this population are limited (5). CDC analyzed U.S. case surveillance data on mpox cases in transgender and gender-diverse adults reported during May 17-

On August 14, 2024, the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the increasing outbreaks of mpox (formerly monkeypox) should be regarded as an international public health emergency due to the growing number of cases in endemic and non-endemic geographical areas, and increasing disease severity. The latest update from the WHO and the alerts given regarding the status of mpox follows an upsurge in the incidence and severity of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and an increasing number of African countries, with spread to other continents and countri

Mpox (monkeypox), caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), is a zoonotic disease from the Poxviridae family, closely related to smallpox. It presents with high fever, rash, and pustules, with human-to-human transmission first reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1970. Historically, such transmissions were rare, but since 2022, an alarming global surge in infections began, originating in the United Kingdom. By mid-2024, 99,176 cases and 208 deaths were reported in 116 countries, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Conc

Monkeypox (mpox) is an infectious disease caused by the mpox virus and can potentially lead to fatal outcomes. It resembles infections caused by viruses from other families, challenging identification. The pathogenesis, transmission, and clinical manifestations of mpox and other Orthopoxvirus species are similar due to their closely related genetic material. This review provides a comprehensive discussion of the roles of various proteins, including extracellular enveloped virus (EEV), intracellular mature virus (IMV), and profilin-like proteins of mpox. It also highlights recent diagnostic tec
