Alterations in the expression of mucin family members play an important role as well as alterations in oncogenes and onco-suppressor genes in carcinogenesis and progression of pancreatic cancer. We analyzed the expression and localization of MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC and small intestinal mucin antigen (SIMA) in pancreatic tumors. MUC1 expression was observed in almost all samples, whereas MUC2 expression was not. BACKGROUND: The incidence of lymph node metastasis in pT1 epithelial ovarian cancer is between 5% and 21%. Most cases with lymph node metastasis are those of serous carcinoma; it is relatively rare in mucinous carcinoma. Therefore, there is a recent trend to omit systematic lymphadenectomy in early stage mucinous carcinoma. Studies on the secretory response of rat submandibular tissues to isoproterenol (IPR) and the neurotransmitter receptors show that beta-adrenoceptors are altered with specific changes in mucin secretion by brief treatment of the tissues with IPR. The requirements of human salivary mucins for aggregating potential towards the common cariogenic oral bacteria, S. mutans and S. sanguis, were investigated. Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is now considered to originate from appendiceal mucinous neoplasms in almost all cases. However, a mucinous neoplasm arising in a mature cystic teratoma is rarely responsible for PMP. We herein report 2 cases of PMP associated with borderline mucinous tumors arising in mature cystic teratoma. Both ovarian borderline mucinous tumors were morphologically and immunohistochemically similar to the secondary tumors from appendiceal origin, and PMP was histologically similar to peritoneal adenomucinosis.
