Introduction to the Forum: Global Assessment of Narratives.

PURPOSE: This article introduces the Forum: Global Assessment of Narratives, which brings together contributions highlighting two freely accessible narrative assessment tools developed for international and cross-linguistic use: Global TALES (Talking About Lived Experiences in Stories) for eliciting personal narratives, and LITMUS-MAIN (Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings-Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives) for eliciting fictional narratives. It summarizes how narrative-based approaches can enrich and enhance existing assessment practices and argues that narrati

Health system navigation for STI testing among migrant women sex workers in Metro Vancouver, Canada: a mixed methods study.

Migrant sex workers in Canada experience substantial barriers to sexual health. This mixed-methods study examined their sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing experiences in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia. Quantitative data from 167 migrant women sex workers, a subsample of a longitudinal community cohort study, were analyzed. Multivariable generalized estimating equation analyses examined associations of healthcare barriers, insurance coverage, sex work outreach services, language, and stigma with recent STI testing. Qualitative thematic analysis of 22 interviews with indoor migrant

FAIR-Birth: Development and Feasibility Testing of an AI-Supported Advance Birth Planning Application for Midwifery-Led Antenatal Care-A Mixed-Methods Study Protocol.

Background/Objectives: Clinical childbirth in high-income countries is increasingly shaped by standardised routines that do not always accommodate individual preferences. In Germany, approximately one in eight pregnant persons experiences clinically significant childbirth-related post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, with pregnant persons facing language or health-literacy barriers being at particular risk of inadequate preference integration. Methods: This paper presents the conceptual foundation and proposed study design for FAIR-Birth, an interdisciplinary initiative to develop and feasi

Toward Inclusive Large-Scale Alzheimer's Disease Detection via Speech and Language Modeling.

Previous speech-based detection methods for Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD) have been constrained by small sample sizes, reliance on single corpora, languages, tasks, and recording conditions, limiting their generalizability. Moreover, many studies have simplified cognitive decline progression through binary classification. To address these limitations, we developed a multimodal framework integrating language-agnostic, multilingual, and language-dependent models with demographic data to enhance adaptability across diverse cohorts. We applied this model to a three-class classif

Access to cardiac rehabilitation and the role of language barriers in the provision of cardiac rehabilitation to migrants.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has proven health benefits and, according to international guidelines, CR must be offered to all eligible patients. Studies have reported lower uptake of CR among migrants, and migrants are known to face several barriers in their access to healthcare, of which language is the most common. The aim of this study is to examine the provision of CR core components for migrants; and the role of language barriers in the provision of CR in Danish hospitals and municipalities. METHODS: This is a descriptive study based on repeated nationwide surveys conducted in

Review of State Policies and Guidance for the Identification of Culturally and Linguistically Minoritized Students With Specific Learning Disabilities.

The identification of specific learning disabilities (SLD) remains fraught with controversy and uncertainty about professionals' capacity to appropriately identify special education eligibility. For students from linguistically minoritized backgrounds, the exclusionary clause prohibits the identification of learning difficulties primarily attributable to contextual or linguistic factors. Yet the ambiguity of the federal language may hinder application, making critical states' interpretation and corresponding guidance for professional practice in eligibility determination. In this archival stud

Disentangling dyslexia from typical L2-learning in emergent literacy.

The present paper assessed how dyslexia can be identified in school children with another language than their first language. Participants were school children with Norwegian as their second language (L2), and two groups of children with Norwegian as their first language (L1): a control group (L1-Con), and a dyslexia group (L1-Dys). All were 2nd and 3rd graders who had attended Norwegian schools from 1st grade on. None of the individuals in L1-Con or the L2 group were identified with any learning disability. However, slow literacy progress was seen in some L2-children. The children were tested

The neuroanatomical consequences and pathological implications of bilingualism.

In recent years, there has been a rise in the number of people who are able to speak two or more languages. This has been paralleled by an increase in research related to bilingualism. Despite this, much of the neuroanatomical consequences and pathological implications of bilingualism are still subject to discussion. This review aims to evaluate the neuroanatomical structures related to language and to the acquisition of a second language as well as exploring how learning a second language can alter one's susceptibility to and the progression of certain cerebral pathologies. A literature searc

Current exposure to a second language modulates bilingual visual word recognition: An EEG study.

Bilingual word recognition has been the focus of much empirical work, but research on potential modulating factors, such as individual differences in L2 exposure, are limited. This study represents a first attempt to determine the impact of L2-exposure on bilingual word recognition in both languages. To this end, highly fluent bilinguals were split into two groups according to their L2-exposure, and performed a semantic categorisation task while recording their behavioural responses and electro-cortical (EEG) signal. We predicted that lower L2-exposure should produce less efficient L2 word rec

Comparing Bilingual to Monolingual Learners on English Spelling: A Meta-analytic Review.

This study reports on a meta-analysis to examine how bilingual learners compare with English monolingual learners on two English spelling outcomes: real-word spelling and pseudo-word spelling. Eighteen studies published in peer-reviewed journals between 1990 and 2014 were retrieved. The study-level variables and characteristics (e.g. sample size, study design and research instruments) were coded, and 29 independent effect sizes across the 18 retrieved studies were analysed. We found that bilinguals outperformed monolinguals on real-word spelling overall and more so in early grades, but monolin

FROM MUSEUM TRANSLATION TO AUTHENTIC MATERIALS FOR ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION: TRANSLATING JAVANESE ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERITAGE INTO ENGLISH THROUGH MUSEUM SONOBUDOYO'S BILINGUAL TEXTS.

Museum bilingual texts play an important role in communicating cultural heritage to international audiences while offering potential resources for English language education. However, limited research has integrated translation strategies, the representation of archaeological and historical meanings, and the pedagogical value of bilingual museum texts within a single analytical framework. This study investigates the English translation of Javanese archaeological heritage texts in Museum Sonobudoyo, Yogyakarta. Specifically, it examines (1) the translation strategies employed, (2) how archaeolo

Deconstructing bilingualism and its sociocultural determinants in cognitive aging and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

Despite bilingualism being highly prevalent worldwide, the role of bilingualism in cognitive aging and Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) remains inconclusive. Gaps include whether bilingual adults show reduced ADRD risk, how cognitive decline manifests across both languages, and what considerations are needed for accurate clinical assessment and intervention. The Bilingualism, Languages and Literacy Special Interest Group, part of the Diversity and Disparities Professional Interest Area, gathered an international, interdisciplinary group of researchers to identify key methodolog

Determining Optimal Talker Variability for Nonnative Speech Training: A Systematic Review and Bayesian Network Meta-Analysis.

PURPOSE: This meta-analysis study aimed to determine the optimal level of talker variability in training to maximize second-language speech learning. METHOD: We conducted a systematic search for studies comparing different levels of talker variability in nonnative speech training, published through July 2024. Two independent reviewers screened studies for eligibility, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was implemented to estimate relative effect sizes of different talker variability training conditions and rank these conditions by their posterior p

Writing proficiency in English as L2 in Spanish children with dyslexia.

Different studies have demonstrated that people with dyslexia have difficulties in acquiring fluent reading and writing. These problems are also evident when they learn a second language. The aim of our study was to investigate if there is a linguistic transfer effect for writing in children with dyslexia when they face tasks in English (L2), as well as the possible influence of other linguistic skills (spelling, vocabulary and reading) in English (L2) and in Spanish (L1). Participants completed a series of tasks both in Spanish and English: a picture naming task, a word reading task, a word s

A 3-year longitudinal investigation of the overlap and stability of English and French word reading difficulties in French immersion children.

Extensive research has demonstrated the importance of struggling reader identification in monolingual children Compton et al. (Journal of Educational Psychology, 102, 327-340, 2010). However, very few studies have explored identification of struggling readers in bilinguals. The aim of this study was to investigate (1) the overlap of word reading difficulties in English and French, (2) the difference in overlap when word reading fluency skills are included in struggling reader classification, and (3) the stability of English and French word reading profiles. A total of 169 French immersion chil
