Assessment of physical traits of rat offspring derived from mothers exposed to dioxin.

Negative effects of dioxin action are associated with limited abilities of their bio-degradation along with continuously increasing production and long-term bio-accumulation of those toxins in living organisms. Dioxins penetrate through placenta to fetus indicating indirect toxic effects on offspring of mothers exposed to the action of these toxins. During lactation a significant part of dioxins is excreted from organism with milk, which contributes to further accumulation of those compounds and multiple exceeding of maximal permissible dose of dioxins in newborns feeding with mother's milk. Prevalence and patterns of choanal atresia and choanal stenosis among pregnancies in Texas, 1999-2004.

Congenital choanal atresia and stenosis (CA/S) are the most common craniofacial abnormalities of the nose. However, little is known about the epidemiology of these conditions. The present study was undertaken to expand our understanding of the epidemiology of CA/S by analyzing data from the Texas Birth Defect Registry (TBDR) for the period 1999-2004. Descriptive analyses and estimates of birth prevalence and crude prevalence ratios were used to characterize CA/S cases in Texas during the study period. Among the 2,209,758 live births in 1999-2004 in Texas, there were 202 cases of CA/S for an ov

The breastfeeding experience of women with multiple pregnancies: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: The experiences and challenges associated with breastfeeding multiple births can be considerably more complex than those of singletons. Multiple births refer to the delivery of more than one offspring in a single birth event. Emphasizing the needs and experiences of mothers with multiple births during breastfeeding can enable healthcare providers to design targeted interventions that enhance breastfeeding rates. However, existing breastfeeding and health education resources and practices do not fully meet the needs of women who breastfeed multiples. This review aimed to review and

Maternal and perinatal characteristics of infants who, later in life, developed multiple sclerosis: Record-linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-natal and early life factors may have a role in multiple sclerosis (MS) pathogenesis in some people. However, the reporting of any influence of maternal and perinatal factors on MS risk has been limited. We aimed to study maternal and perinatal characteristics of babies who went on to develop MS. METHODS: Data were analysed from the historical Oxford Record Linkage Study dataset 1970-1989, which incorporated a specialised maternity dataset with record linkage between mother and baby, covering a population of 850,000. Each maternal admission record, and records of her baby, wer

Maternal thyroid disease and risk of birth defects in offspring: a population-based case-control study.

We investigated the relationship between maternal thyroid disease and the risk of birth defects in offspring using data from a large population-based, case-control study. Cases included 4904 stillborn and liveborn infants with major anomalies diagnosed in the first year of life and born to residents of metropolitan Atlanta between 1968 and 1980. Controls included 3027 normal babies, frequency-matched to cases by race, hospital of birth and quarter of birth. We compared mothers of cases and controls regarding history of physician-diagnosed hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism before the infant's

Periconceptional events perturb postnatal growth regulation in sheep.

Periconceptional undernutrition and twin conception alter intrauterine growth and metabolism and are associated with later adverse metabolic outcomes. The contribution of postnatal growth to these outcomes is less well defined. We investigated whether maternal periconceptional undernutrition or twin conception altered postnatal growth regulation in ways that could lead to metabolic disease. Single and twin offspring of ewes undernourished (UN) from 61 d before until 30 d after mating, fed to achieve and maintain 10-15% weight loss (UN), were compared with offspring of maintenance-fed controls

Maternal reproductive and demographic characteristics as risk factors for hypospadias.

This study examined the association of hypospadias risk with several maternal reproductive and demographic characteristics: age, parity, body mass index (BMI), nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP), multiple pregnancy, fertility treatments and procedures, education and race-ethnicity. The study included data on deliveries with estimated due dates from October 1997 to December 2000 that were part of the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a multi-state case-control study of many birth defects. The analysis included 502 cases with second or third degree hypospadias (i.e. the urethra opened

Prenatal exposure to maternal β-thalassemia minor and the risk for long-term hematologic morbidity in the offspring: A population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: β-Thalassemia has been shown to be associated with adverse short-term perinatal outcomes including low birth weight and preterm labor. The aim of this study was to assess whether in-utero exposure of maternal β-thalassemia minor is a risk factor for offspring hematological morbidity. STUDY DESIGN: A population-based retrospective cohort study was conducted, including all infants born between the years 1991-2014 at a tertiary medical center. Long-term hospitalizations with hematologic morbidities were compared between offspring of mothers with or without β-thalassemia minor. Multipl

Association between ovarian stimulators with or without intrauterine insemination, and assisted reproductive technologies on multiple births.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to quantify the risk of multiple births associated with the use of different modalities of medically assisted reproduction. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a case-control study using a birth cohort from 2006 through 2009. This cohort was built with the linkage of data obtained by a self-administered questionnaire and medical, hospital, pharmaceutical, birth, and death databases in Quebec. Cases were pregnancies resulting in multiple live births (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision/International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes).

Gonadotropin therapy: a 20th century relic.

Gonadotropin therapy has been a cornerstone of infertility therapy for half a century. From the very beginning, its use has been associated with a high rate of multiple births, particularly high order multiples, and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. Initially, success rates seemed acceptable when used for superovulation (SO)/IUI therapy. However, as data from RCTs have emerged, reported outcomes suggest that we question the use of injectible gonadotropins. This manuscript examines the studies that have challenged gonadotropin use for SO/IUI and other research that supports reduced doses of go

Large Reduction in Adiponectin During Pregnancy Is Associated With Large-for-Gestational-Age Newborns.

CONTEXT: Fetuses exposed to an obese intrauterine environment are more likely to be born large-for-gestational age (LGA) and are at increased risk of obesity in childhood and cardiovascular disease and/or type 2 diabetes mellitus as adults, but which factors that influence the intrauterine environment is less clear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between circulating levels of leptin and adiponectin, measured multiple times during pregnancy, and birth weight and prevalence of LGA or small-for-gestational-age infants. The association between birth weight and messenger RNA (mRNA) expr

Fetal alcohol exposure and mammary tumorigenesis in offspring: role of the estrogen and insulin-like growth factor systems.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders affect a significant number of live births each year, indicating that alcohol consumption during pregnancy is an important public health issue. Environmental exposures and lifestyle choices during pregnancy may affect the offspring's risk of disease in adulthood, leading to the idea that a woman's risk of breast cancer may be pre-programmed prior to birth. Exposure of pregnant rats to alcohol increases tumorigenesis in the adult offspring in response to mammary carcinogens. The estrogen and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) axes occupy central roles in normal

Life events in pregnancy, early childhood, adolescence and adulthood predicting adult mental illness: A 40-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Life events (adversities) represent widely prevalent experiences that have been implicated as causes of mental illnesses. There is little known about whether the experience of multiple life events over the early life course predicts depression, anxiety and delusional thoughts in adulthood, independently of life events in adulthood. METHODS: We take data from a long-running birth cohort study which follows mothers from pregnancy and their children to 40 years of age. Life events are measured in pregnancy, shortly after the birth, and at 5 and 14 years (mother report) and are also r

Prenatal alcohol and offspring development: the first fourteen years.

This report summarizes findings from a prospective longitudinal study of the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on a birth cohort of 500 offspring selected from 1,529 consecutive pregnant women in prenatal care by mid-pregnancy at two representative community hospitals. Effects of prenatal alcohol observable on size measures at birth were insignificant after 8 months. Morphometric analysis of facial features identified effects only at the very highest alcohol exposure levels. By contrast, dose-dependent effects on neurobehavioral function from birth to 14 years have been established using pa

Maternal complement C1q and increased odds for psychosis in adult offspring.

The presence of maternal antibodies to food and infectious antigens may confer an increased risk of developing schizophrenia and psychosis in adult offspring. Complement factor C1q is an immune molecule with multiple functions including clearance of antigen-antibody complexes from circulation and mediation of synaptic pruning during fetal brain development. To determine if maternal C1q was associated with offspring schizophrenia and psychosis, we evaluated 55 matched case-control maternal serum pairs from the National Collaborative Perinatal Project. Sample pairs were composed of mothers whose

Influence of sperm morphology on pregnancy outcome and offspring in in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection: a matched case-control study.

Sperm morphology was once believed as one of the most predictive indicators of pregnancy outcome in assisted reproductive technology (ART). However, the impact of teratozoospermia on in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) outcomes and its offspring remains inconclusive. In order to evaluate the influence of teratozoospermia on pregnancy outcome and newborn status after IVF and ICSI, a retrospective study was conducted. This was a matched case-control study that included 2202 IVF cycles and 2574 ICSI cycles and was conducted at the Reproductive and Genetic Hospital
