DNA of Theileria orientalis, T. equi and T. capreoli in stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans).

BACKGROUND: From a veterinary-medical point of view, the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, is perhaps the economically most important blood-sucking muscoid fly species (Diptera: Muscidae), owing to its worldwide occurrence, frequently high local abundance, direct harm caused to livestock, pet animals and humans, as well as its vector role. Considering the latter in the context of protozoan parasites, the stable fly is a mechanical vector of trypanosomes and Besnoitia besnoiti. However, its role as a vector of piroplasms appears to be seldom studied, despite old data suggesting mechanical transm

Human and other faeces as breeding media of the trachoma vector Musca sorbens.

The fly Musca sorbens Wiedemann (Diptera: Muscidae) apparently transmits Chlamydia trachomatis, causing human trachoma. The literature indicates that M. sorbens breeds predominantly in isolated human faeces on the soil surface, but not in covered pit latrines. We sought to identify breeding media of M. sorbens in a rural Gambian village endemic for trachoma. Test breeding media were presented for oviposition on soil-filled buckets and monitored for adult emergence. Musca sorbens emerged from human (6/9 trials), calf (3/9), cow (3/9), dog (2/9) and goat (1/9) faeces, but not from horse faeces,

Use of blood meals from stable flies to evaluate the bovine leukemia virus infection status in cattle herds: a pilot study.

The incidence of enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL), a type of B-cell lymphoma, is increasing in Japan. EBL is caused by bovine leukemia virus (BLV; Retroviridae, Deltaretrovirus bovleu) infection and is diagnosed by detecting antibodies against BLV in milk and blood or BLV DNA in blood. We assessed the feasibility of using stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) as a sampling tool to assess BLV infection status in cattle herds. First, we collected blood from 3 cattle herds and, based on the measurement of BLV-proviral load (PVL) by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), identified 1) a BLV-free herd, 2) a

The Flies and Eyes project: design and methods of a cluster-randomised intervention study to confirm the importance of flies as trachoma vectors in The Gambia and to test a sustainable method of fly control using pit latrines.

The Flies and Eyes project is a community-based, cluster-randomised, intervention trial based in a rural area of The Gambia. It was designed to prove whether flies are mechanical vectors of trachoma; to quantify the relative importance of flies as vectors of trachoma and to test the effectiveness of insecticide spraying and the provision of latrines in trachoma control. A total of 21 clusters, each composed of 300-550 people, are to be recruited in groups of three. One cluster from each group is randomly allocated to receive insecticide spraying, one to receive pit latrines and the remaining t

Behavioural responses of dairy cattle to the stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, in an open field environment.

Individual cows (25 in each of four herds) were monitored 8-10 times weekly for 12 weeks (stable fly season) on a southern California dairy, with 100 observations per cow. The numbers of biting stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) on the front legs and the frequencies of four fly-repelling behaviours per 2-min observation period [head throws, front leg stamps, skin twitches (panniculus reflex) and tail flicks] were recorded. Fly numbers varied, peaking at 3.0-3.5 flies per leg in week 9 (late May). Weekly herd mean frequencies of fly-repelling behaviours were highly depen

Laboratory and field assessment of cyantraniliprole relative to existing fly baits.

BACKGROUND: Toxic fly baits are commonly used for fly control in California animal operations. However, resistance development has been a problem. Comprehensive laboratory and field studies were conducted to test commercial baits (imidacloprid, methomyl, dinotefuran, spinosad) and one novel cyantraniliprole bait. A susceptible Musca domestica strain was compared with wild-type M. domestica and Fannia canicularis strains in the laboratory using choice/no-choice tests. Field visitation to baits and both short- and longer-term mortality were documented. RESULTS: Susceptible Musca suffered high m

Spatio-temporal distribution of tsetse and other biting flies in the Mouhoun River basin, Burkina Faso.

In the Mouhoun River basin, Burkina Faso, the main vectors of African animal trypanosomoses are Glossina palpalis gambiensis Vanderplank and Glossina tachinoides Westwood (Diptera: Glossinidae), both of which are riverine tsetse species. The aim of our study was to understand the impact of landscape anthropogenic changes on the seasonal dynamics of vectors and associated trypanosomosis risk. Three sites were selected on the basis of the level of disturbance of tsetse habitats and predominant tsetse species: disturbed (Boromo, for G. tachinoides) and half-disturbed (Douroula for G. tachinoides

The value of Doppler ultrasound in diagnosis in 25 cases of furunculoid myiasis.

BACKGROUND: The larvae of the botfly Dermatobia hominis cause furunculoid myiasis in endemic areas. Lack of knowledge of this condition outside these areas leads to confusion in diagnosis and delays appropriate treatment. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical findings of furunculoid myiasis encountered in Quintana Roo, in the south-east of Mexico. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed an observational study on 25 cases diagnosed over a period of 4 years. RESULTS: Diagnosis of furunculoid myiasis was made in 14 males and 11 females with an average age of 24.5 years. Most of our patients were stu

Responses of the putative trachoma vector, Musca sorbens, to volatile semiochemicals from human faeces.

The putative vector of trachoma, Musca sorbens, prefers to lay its eggs on human faeces on the ground. This study sought to determine whether M. sorbens females were attracted to volatile odours from human faeces in preference to odours from the faeces of other animals, and to determine whether specific volatile semiochemicals mediate selection of the faeces. Traps baited with the faeces of humans and local domestic animals were used to catch flies at two trachoma-endemic locations in The Gambia and one in Ethiopia. At all locations, traps baited with faeces caught more female M. sorbens than

Urogenital myiasis: a human case report.

Myiasis is caused by the larval stages of flies feeding on live or dead mammalian tissues and fluids. Human cases involving the genitourinary system are very rare and present with unusual symptoms. We report the case of a male, 25-year-old shepherd who underwent a surgical intervention on his urinary tract for renal lithiasis and was catheterized with a drain dwelling in his left kidney. A few days after the patient showed signs of dysuria, polyuria and pollakisuria. Lower urinary tract infection with ciprofloxacin susceptible E. coli was diagnosed and treated accordingly. The symptoms persiste

Investigating the role of stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) and biting midges of the genus Culicoides as potential mechanical vectors of African swine fever virus in Lithuania, Poland and Romania.

BACKGROUND: Since its emergence in Georgia in 2007, the seasonal pattern of African swine fever virus (ASFV) genotype II outbreaks in European pig populations has been evident. It is hypothesized that summer-related farming practices, along with the increased activity and abundance of arthropod vectors during warmer months, contribute to the increased incidence of these outbreaks during this period. This study investigated the potential role of stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) and biting midges of the genus Culicoides as mechanical vectors of ASFV. In addition, the potential distribution and
