Body Temperature Regulation in the Rat by Muscle Tone.

AIM: We have previously described an important role of skeletal muscle tone in body temperature regulation, muscle tone defined as the tonic motor unit activity recorded between movements. Here, we study muscle tone in an extensive sample of new muscles outside (external muscles) and inside (internal muscles) the body core. METHODS: Skeletal muscles of adult, male Wistar rats were chronically implanted with EMG electrodes, and EMG was recorded during exposures to changes in ambient temperatures between 30°C and 5°C. Every consecutive period between movements (M) was identified as one of rest

Improved Eyelid Muscle Tension Balance With Refined Frontalis Muscle Flap Suspension in the Treatment of Severe Ptosis.

BACKGROUND: The tension balance of the upper eyelid following ptosis repair is crucial to a successful postoperative outcome. To improve on existing surgical techniques, the authors developed a new refined frontalis muscle flap suspension (FMFS) for severe ptosis repair and explored the balancing effect between the orbicularis muscle and frontalis muscle following surgery. METHODS: Forty-three patients (47 eyes) with a mean age of 6.07 ± 2.55 years old were diagnosed with severe congenital ptosis and underwent refined FMFS with complete orbicularis preservation between January 1, 2010 and Dec

Hamstring tightness and Scheuermann's disease a pilot study.

The lateral radiographs of the dorsal spines of 20 patients presenting with mainly low back pain are studied. These patients had clinically evident loss of flexion in the low dorsal spine and very tight hamstring muscles. 85% of them showed definite evidence of previous Scheuermann's Disease. The possibility that tight hamstrings may be an important factor in the aetiology of this disease is discussed, and a further large scale study is proposed.

[Electromyographic study of mentalis muscle reaction to pain].

Three types of muscular reaction to pain were distinguished. Type I--a defensive reaction to a noxious stimulus, type II--muscular guarding at the site of pain, type III--suffering expression. The third type includes reaction of facial muscles discernible only at high pain intensity in subjects with hypersensitivity to pain. In a search for this reaction in all pains electromyographic investigations of the mentalis muscle were carried out since their connection with nociceptive stimulation is made use of in the sign of Marinesco-Radovici. In 18 out of 20 patients with sciatic pain spontaneous

[Congenital muscular dystrophy].

Four patients with typical signs of congenital muscular dystrophy (C.M.D.), as described in the literature, are reported. In two young sisters born from consanguineous parents the presenting signs were severe congenital hypotonia in one and hypotonia with arthrogryposis in the other. The two other cases were adult patients with a long standing disease, the onset haring been marked by a transient neonatal hypotonia in one and by a congenital torticollis in the other. All 4 patients had progressively increasing muscle retractions, with absent reflexes in three. C.P.K. was moderately increased in

Evidence for nitric oxide mediation of contractile activity in isolated strips of the human Fallopian tube.

Endogenously produced nitric oxide (NO) induces relaxation in smooth muscle in various organs. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a NO-mediated relaxation system exists in the human Fallopian tube. To study contractility, the isthmic portion of the tube was obtained from 23 fertile women during operations due to benign non-tubal diseases. Tubal smooth muscle strips were mounted in tissue chambers containing HEPES buffer and connected to a Grass transducer for the isometric registration of contractile activity. By adding L-arginine (the substrate for NO synthesis) or N-nitro-L

[Ultrasound imaging of the urethral sphincter].

The integrity and functional capacity of the urethral sphincter is one of the important prerequisites of urinary incontinence in women. Urodynamic investigations revealed repeatedly that the maximum closure pressure in the median portion of the urethra corresponds to the maximal thickness of the external urethral sphinctor (rhabdosphincter urethrae). This striated muscle is adapted to maintain a relatively steady tonus which assists the closure mechanism of the urethra [4]. In the submitted study the authors focused attention on the ultrasonic visualization of the internal urethral sphincter i

Increased muscle activity during sleep and more RBD symptoms in H1N1-(Pandemrix)-vaccinated narcolepsy type 1 patients compared with their non-narcoleptic siblings.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is characterized by unstable sleep-wake and muscle tonus regulation during sleep. We characterized dream enactment and muscle activity during sleep in a cohort of post-H1N1 NT1 patients and their siblings, and analyzed whether clinical phenotypic characteristics and major risk factors are associated with increased muscle activity. METHODS: RBD symptoms and polysomnography m. tibialis anterior electromyographical signals [long (0.5-15 s); short (0.1-0.49 s)] were compared between 114 post-H1N1 NT1 patients and 89 non-narcoleptic siblings. Acute Effect of Physio-logic® Exercises on Muscle Tone and Stiffness in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients: A Preliminary Study.

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional structural deformity of the spine characterized by lateral curvature, vertebral axial rotation, and alterations in sagittal physiological curves. Physio-logic® exercises have been reported to correct deformity in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients by reducing the degree of trunk rotation. The purpose of this preliminary study was therefore to examine the acute effect of Physio-logic® exercises on muscle tone and stiffness of trunk muscles in patients with idiopathic scoliosis. Five patients diagnosed with AIS, with a mean age of 16.2 years and a mea

The comparison between vocal facilitating techniques, manual circumlaryngeal therapy, and combined voice therapy in teachers with muscle tension dysphonia: a randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Although voice therapy (VT) has been known effective in muscle tension dysphonia (MTD), it is not obviously clear which VT approach is more effective. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of Vocal Facilitating Techniques (VFTs), Manual Circumlaryngeal Therapy (MCT), and combined VT in teachers with MTD. METHODS: This study was a double-blind parallel randomized clinical trial. Thirty elementary female teachers with MTD were divided into three treatment groups including VFTs; MCT, and combined VT. In addition, vocal hygiene was presented to all groups. All participants receiv

Efficient Actor-Critic Reinforcement Learning With Embodiment of Muscle Tone for Posture Stabilization of the Human Arm.

This letter proposes a new idea to improve learning efficiency in reinforcement learning (RL) with the actor-critic method used as a muscle controller for posture stabilization of the human arm. Actor-critic RL (ACRL) is used for simulations to realize posture controls in humans or robots using muscle tension control. However, it requires very high computational costs to acquire a better muscle control policy for desirable postures. For efficient ACRL, we focused on embodiment that is supposed to potentially achieve efficient controls in research fields of artificial intelligence or robotics.

Current evidence on the unit equivalence of different botulinum neurotoxin A formulations and recommendations for clinical practice in dermatology.

BACKGROUND: The unit equivalence between the two main Botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNTA) preparations, Dysport (Ipsen Ltd., Slough, Berkshire, UK) and BOTOX (Allergan Inc., Irvine, CA), is a matter of discussion. The UK assay used to test Dysport is more sensitive than the U.S. assay used for BOTOX, resulting in a different efficacy per unit in both formulations. Ratios ranging from 6:1 to 1:1 can be found in the literature, but the more recently published literature suggests that 1 unit of BOTOX is equivalent to approximately 2 to 4 units of Dysport (ratio 2:1-4:1). OBJECTIVE: Because the number
