Septal papillary muscles, similarly to other papillary muscles, are essential elements of the heart valvular system. Damage to their structure may lead to a considerable life risk. Of all the papillary muscles, the septal papillary muscles are characterized by the greatest topographical and morphological variability. However, information about these muscles is scarce and fragmentary. The objective of this study was to ascertain their occurrence and the region in which they are placed in the inter-ventricular septum. One hundred and eleven human hearts were examined. The hearts belonged to the

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) now enables precise visualisation of the mechanical state of the living human orbit, enabling inferences about the effects of mechanical factors on ocular kinematics. We used 3-dimensional (3D) magnetic search coil recordings and MRI to investigate the mechanical state of the orbit during vergence in humans. Horizontal convergence of 23 degrees from a remote to a near target aligned on one eye was geometrically ideal, and was associated with lens thickening and extorsion of the rectus pulley array of the aligned eye with superior oblique muscle relaxation and i

Using an iterative kinematics-driven nonlinear finite element model, relative efficiency of individual abdominal muscles in spinal stability in upright standing posture was investigated. Effect of load height on stability and muscle activities was also computed under different coactivity levels in abdominal muscles. The internal oblique was the most efficient muscle (compared with the external oblique and rectus abdominus) in providing stability while generating smaller spinal loads with lower fatigue rate of muscles. As the weight was held higher, stability deteriorated requiring additional f

Distraction osteogenesis is used to treat atrophic nonunion and focal osteomyelitis. It enhances blood vessel formation in the distracted callus and in the surrounding soft tissues. Long-term angiogenesis, however, is not well described. We hypothesized newly formed blood vessels persist in the surrounding muscles until the late consolidation period. We performed unilateral tibial lengthening in eight adult Beagles. Seven days after tibial osteotomy, we began lengthening for 30 days, following which consolidation was allowed to proceed for another 60 days. We took bilateral microangiograms of

The control of the scapulothoracic muscles trapezius (Tr) and serratus anterior (SA) has been examined in normal human subjects. Electromyographic recordings were made from the SA and Tr muscles (upper trapezius UTr, lower trapezius LTr) using surface electrodes placed bilaterally. Magnetic stimulation of the motor cortex and electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves were used to examine their descending and reflex control. The average optimal site of cortical stimulation was found to be the same for SA, UTr and LTr (an approximate centre of gravity of -0.6 cm, 3.7 cm where the centre of gra

A retrospective analysis was performed in a nine month period of the electrophysiological data, imaging and clinical findings of patients with monoradicular disc herniation compressing either the L5 or the S1 nerve root. The primary purpose of the analysis was to determine the distribution of pathological spontaneous activity in the medial paraspinal muscles on electromyographic examination in monoradicular L5 and S1 nerve root compression syndromes. Anatomically, the medial paraspinal muscles receive their innervation from a single root while the iliocostalis muscles and the longissimus muscl

The morphological events forming the body's musculature are sensitive to genetic and environmental perturbations with high incidence of congenital myopathies, muscular dystrophies and degenerations. Pattern formation generates branching series of states in the genetic regulatory network. Different states of the network specify pre-myogenic progenitor cells in the head and trunk. These progenitors reveal their myogenic nature by the subsequent onset of expression of the master switch gene MyoD and/or Myf5. Once initiated, the myogenic progression that ultimately forms mature muscle appears to b

Whereas the most powerful stimuli for bone formation is supposed to be a stretching of muscles, Frost HM classified the effect of muscle on bone mineral density (BMD) into various types: 1. age-related loss of bone mineral density (BMD) is partly due to loss of muscular wasting, 2. the increase of BMD in obesity is due to the increase in muscular power to support the increased body weight and 3. the decrease of BMD in chronic wasting disease is partly due to the decrease in muscular power. Likewise, the decrease in BMD in mandibular alveolar bones will be partly due to the decrease in the powe

BACKGROUND: Bupivacaine injected into animal muscles induces a cycle of myotoxicity, degeneration, regeneration and hypertrophy of muscle fibres, without adverse effects on other tissues. This induced hypertrophy can be harnessed to treat strabismus.
METHODS: Bupivacaine, 4.5 ml of a 0.75% solution, was injected into the right lateral rectus (RLR) muscle of a patient who had diplopia and who showed 14-prism-dioptres oesotropia.
RESULTS: RLR paresis persisted for 7 days. Then, the RLR regained its abducting ability, and progressive improvement of alignment to 4-prism-dioptres oesophoria occur

OBJECT: Although conducting cervical laminoplasty in patients with multisegmental cord compression provides good neurological results, it is not without shortcomings, including C-5 palsy, axial neck pain, and undesirable radiologically detectable changes. Postoperative kyphosis and segmental instability can cause neurological problems and are believed mainly to result from neck muscle disruption. The authors developed a new laminoplasty technique, with the aim of preserving optimal muscle function.
METHODS: The present technique is a modification of unilateral open-door laminoplasty. By using

OBJECTIVE: Measure the effects of cervical extensor muscle isometric contraction on cervical surface electromyographic spectral shift and balance in healthy subjects.
DESIGN: Experimental within-subject design.
BACKGROUND: Postural instability can be induced by mechanically stimulating cervical muscle spindles. Postural changes are also observed in individuals who suffer from chronic neck pain or whiplash injury. Furthermore these subjects appear to experience neck musculature fatigue more quickly, which in turn not only affects the neck function but also seems to affect the balance in a sta

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: To explain the effect of estrogen on skeletal muscle, the presence of estrogen receptor alpha mRNA (ERalpha mRNA) was investigated in human skeletal muscle.
METHODS: The highly sensitive technique of nested reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (nested RT-PCR) was applied on a variety of tissue samples of both sexes: women (deltoid, pectoral, and uterus muscles) (N= 3) and men (deltoid muscle) (N= 3). The total ribonucleic acid was isolated from each tissue sample, reverse transcribed in a thermocycler, and nested PCR was then performed with specific primers. T

Aberrant innervations of oculomotor muscles are a special group of clinical entities, the common sign of which is an abnormal innervation of the oculomotor muscles with nerve fibres which originally were not meant for this purpose. The majority of these anomalies develops during the embryonic period of lesions at the level of nuclei of cranial nerves or peripheral fibres. Congenital aberrations affect most frequently n. VI, less frequently n. III and rarely n. IV. Acquired affections are most frequent in n. III. Abnormal innervation connections concern not only oculomotor muscles but also musc

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The pathophysiology of anal incontinence may be elusive using current parameters. Our aim was to establish the role of the levator ani in anal continence.
METHODS: In 53 patients with anal incontinence, 30 with constipation as disease controls, and 15 healthy controls, we evaluated incontinence severity by a 0-12 scale, anorectal function by standard manometric tests, and levator ani contraction by a perineal dynamometer.
RESULTS: Patients with incontinence exhibited various physiologic abnormalities (3.2 +/- 0.3 per patient), but multiple regression analysis showed that l

Joint instability is one of the most common human afflictions, affecting not only the hip, knee, and shoulder but all joints of the body. Surgical repair for joint instability is done commonly, yet has not been able to restore function consistently. Pain, recurrence of instability, joint stiffness, muscle injury, and degenerative joint disease are all too common sequelae. Because the glenohumeral joint is most commonly dislocated, efforts have been directed to understanding shoulder instability. Study has included not only the static restraints (capsulolabrum, articular surfaces, intracapsular

Deep infiltrating endometriosis (deeper than 5 mm under the peritoneum) often takes the form of a nodular lesion (or 'adenomyotic nodule') consisting of smooth muscles and fibrosis with active glands and scanty stroma. Thus, among endometriotic lesions, a certain distinction is drawn between musculo-glandular lesions and glandular lesions composed of endometrial-like epithelium surrounded by a cell-producing (cytogenous) stroma. The aim of this study was to detect by immunohistochemistry, with a monoclonal antibody against muscle-specific actin, the presence of smooth muscles in 54 endometriot

The superior and inferior gemellus muscles were examined as to their forms and the patterns of nerve supply in 13 human cadavers (20 specimens). The superior gemellus muscle (Gs) was absent in 3 specimens, but showed no accessory slip or fusion with the internal obturator muscle (Oi). The nerve to the Gs originated from the nerve to the Oi (OiN) in 7, the nerve to the quadratus femoris muscle (QfN) in 4, or both in 6 specimens. The inferior gemellus muscle (Gi) was present in all, but fused with the Oi in 3 specimens. In one specimen, an accessory muscle bundle was observed between the Gi and

The afferent impulses from the tongue muscles are carried by the hypoglossal nerve, trigeminal nerve, and some of them by glossopharyngeal nerve. The main exit of afferent fibers constitutes the hypoglossal nerve. The location of the ganglion cells responsible for proprioceptive impulses are mainly in the spinal ganglia of the C1-C3 spinal nerves.

OBJECTIVES: Cervical spine disorders are common in the older population. The paravertebral muscles are essential to the support and stabilisation of the cervical spine but have been little studied. The aim was to determine whether pathological changes develop in these muscles in patients with severe cervical spine disease, which, if present, might contribute to the pathogenesis and symptomatology of their disorder.
METHODS: Open biopsies of superficial and deep paravertebral muscles were obtained during the course of surgical procedures to alleviate cervical myelopathy. Most of these patients
