Influence of Sex and Gender on Musculoskeletal Conditions and How They Are Reported.

There is increasing evidence that musculoskeletal tissues are differentially regulated by sex hormones in males and females. The influence of sex hormones, in addition to other sex-based differences such as in anatomical alignment and immune-system function, impact the prevalence and severity of disease as well as the types of injuries that affect the musculoskeletal system and the outcomes of prevention measures and treatment. Literature specifically addressing sex differences related to the musculoskeletal system is limited, underscoring the imperative for both basic and clinical research on

Musculoskeletal morbidity following spinal cord injury: A longitudinal cohort study of privately-insured beneficiaries.

BACKGROUND: People living with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) experience motor, sensory and autonomic impairments that cause musculoskeletal disorders following the injury and that progress throughout lifetime. The range and severity of issues are largely dependent on level and completeness of the injury and preserved function. OBJECTIVE: High risk of developing musculoskeletal morbidities among individuals after sustaining a traumatic SCI is well known in the clinical setting, however, there is a severe lack of evidence in literature. The objective of this study was to compare the incidence of

Musculoskeletal pain in other body sites is associated with new-onset low back pain: a longitudinal study among survivors of the great East Japan earthquake.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a common health problem experienced after natural disasters. LBP is often concurrent with other musculoskeletal pain; however, the effects of preexisting musculoskeletal pain on the development of LBP are not clear. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the association of musculoskeletal pain in other body sites with new-onset LBP among survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE). METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted with survivors of the GEJE. The survivors who did not have LBP at the 3 year time period after the GEJE were followed up 1

Restriction in lateral bending range of motion, lumbar lordosis, and hamstring flexibility predicts the development of low back pain: a systematic review of prospective cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is an increasingly common condition worldwide with significant costs associated with its management. Identification of musculoskeletal risk factors that can be treated clinically before the development of LBP could reduce costs and improve the quality of life of individuals. Therefore the aim was to systematically review prospective cohort studies investigating lower back and / or lower limb musculoskeletal risk factors in the development of LBP. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to Februa

Effects of Hypoglycemic Agents on The Musculoskeletal System: A Comprehensive Review.

Human life expectancy increases with social development, which poses problems related to rapid population ageing. As a common disease among the elderly, the prevention and control of diabetes is an ongoing challenge. Diabetes is associated with decreased bone mineral density, increased incidence of fractures, and decreased muscle strength. Meanwhile, the effects and mechanisms of different hypoglycemic drugs on musculoskeletal health vary. Currently, there are limited studies on the effects of anti-diabetic drugs on musculoskeletal health. However, it is necessary to take into account the effe

Musculoskeletal Pain and Analysis of Postural Risk in Harmonium Players in India: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Harmonium, a commonly played instrument, requires repetitive movements, awkward playing postures, and intense practice routines which may place the musician at risk for injury. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and analyze the postural risk in harmonium players. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 80 harmonium players who received at least 7 consecutive years of formal training. A self-designed questionnaire comprising demographic profiles, playing characteristics, presence of musculoskeletal pain, and specific areas of pain was administered. Postural ri

The study of entheses: proposal of a standardised scoring method for twenty-three entheses of the postcranial skeleton.

Entheses are always visible on the bone, although with variable forms and degrees of expression. The term "robusticity" indicates the "normal" osseous markings at entheses, while "enthesopathy", indicates the presence of enthesophytes or osteolytic areas. A scoring method for enthesopathy development has already been proposed. In this paper, a standardised descriptive and photographic scoring method is proposed for the robusticity of 23 postcranial skeleton entheses. For each enthesis, 3 levels of development are described, corresponding, in general, to a weak-moderate expression (degree 1), s

Anomalous costochondral cartilage in fetal anencephaly.

Anencephaly is a human fetal malformation with absence of brain and calvarium superior to the orbits. The consequent absence of hypothalamus provides a unique model for studying human development, and therefore skeletal growth, in the absence of hypothalamic hormones and their regulatory functions. To assess the influence of hypothalamic insufficiency on cartilage development, we studied costochondral cartilage sections from eight anencephalic fetuses (18-22 weeks old) and seven controls (16-22 weeks old) with pathologies not directly related to skeletal growth. We found a previously undescrib

Genome-wide association study on pharmacological outcomes of musculoskeletal pain in UK Biobank.

The pharmacological management of musculoskeletal pain starts with NSAIDs, followed by weak or strong opioids until the pain is under control. However, the treatment outcome is usually unsatisfying due to inter-individual differences. To investigate the genetic component of treatment outcome differences, we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in ~23,000 participants with musculoskeletal pain from the UK Biobank. NSAID vs. opioid users were compared as a reflection of the treatment outcome of NSAIDs. We identified one genome-wide significant hit in chromosome 4 (rs549224715, P = 3.

Anxiety and Cognition in Cre- Collagen Type II Sirt1 K/O Male Mice.

INTRODUCTION: Using transgenic collagen type II-specific Sirt1 knockout (CKO) mice we studied the role of Sirt1 in nutritional induced catch up growth (CUG) and we found that these mice have a less organized growth plate and reduced efficiency of CUG. In addition, we noted that they weigh more than control (CTL) mice. Studying the reason for the increased weigh, we found differences in activity and brain function. METHODS: Several tests for behavior and activity were used: open field; elevated plus maze, Morris water maze, and home cage running wheels. The level of Glu- osteocalcin, known to

Systematic review of the association between isolated musculoskeletal hypermobility and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) affects 1-3% of the population, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. The coexistence of musculoskeletal hypermobility and scoliosis in many inherited syndromes raises the possibility that isolated musculoskeletal hypermobility may contribute to AIS development or progression. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of the evidence for a relationship between isolated musculoskeletal hypermobility and AIS. A meta-analysis was planned, but if not possible, a narrative evidence synthesis was planned. RESULTS: Nineteen studies met eligibility

Ontogenetic changes in jaw-muscle architecture facilitate durophagy in the turtle Sternotherus minor.

Differential scaling of musculoskeletal traits leads to differences in performance across ontogeny and ultimately determines patterns of resource use during development. Because musculoskeletal growth of the feeding system facilitates high bite-force generation necessary to overcome the physical constraints of consuming more durable prey, durophagous taxa are well suited for investigations of the scaling relationships between musculoskeletal growth, bite-force generation and dietary ontogeny. To elucidate which biomechanical factors are responsible for allometric changes in bite force and duro

Coll2-1 and Coll2-1NO2 as exemplars of collagen extracellular matrix turnover - biomarkers to facilitate the treatment of osteoarthritis?

Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis. However, there are no structure or disease-modifying OA drugs (DMOADs). Introducing personalized healthcare to patients and health-care practitioners is a high priority for the management of arthritic and musculoskeletal diseases. However, there are no biomarker tools that can be used for patient stratification, disease management, and drug development. Biomarkers are capable of diagnosing and prognosing some arthritic and musculoskeletal diseases. Cartilage-based biomarkers have the potential to be used in this context to

Biomechanical Model-Based Development of an Active Occupational Upper-Limb Exoskeleton to Support Healthcare Workers in the Surgery Waiting Room.

Occupational ergonomics in healthcare is an increasing challenge we have to handle in the near future. Physical assistive systems, so-called exoskeletons, are promising solutions to prevent work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Manual handling like pushing, pulling, holding and lifting during healthcare activities require practical and biomechanical effective assistive devices. In this article, a musculoskeletal-model-based development of an assistive exoskeleton is described for manual patient transfer in the surgery waiting room. For that purpose, kinematic data collected with an e
