Pediatric generalized joint hypermobility with and without musculoskeletal complaints: a localized or systemic disorder?

OBJECTIVES: Children with generalized hypermobility of the joints and musculoskeletal complaints frequently visit pediatric clinics, but many show no currently known collagen or other possibly related diseases. Whether the symptoms are confined to the musculoskeletal system is unknown. We assessed whether such children have detectable differences in laxity of connective tissue present in organ systems other than joints. We also assessed whether children with generalized joint hypermobility and musculoskeletal complaints have more profound systemic changes in connective tissue of various organ

Effect of electrical stimulation on musculoskeletal systems; a meta-analysis of controlled clinical trials.

This study was a meta-analysis to examine whether electrical stimulation has specific effects in the healing of musculoskeletal repair process and in the diminution of symptoms with bone and joint disorders. Using MEDLINE (1966-1999) and EMBASE (1985-1999) a search for articles was carried out with four medical subject headings. Data were extracted from all the accessed articles and additionally collected from appropriate journal lists. A total of 20 randomized controlled trials on bones was identified which assessed healing of fractures, bone graft, and other conditions; and 29 randomized con

[Infections of the musculoskeletal system with chronic polyarthritis during a combination therapy with Methotrexate and Leflunomide].

AIM: The long-term results of rheumatoid arthritis are unsatisfactory despite the mono or combination therapy of conventional "disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs". Therefore in the recent past the administration of a combination of Methotrexate with Leflunomide takes place more frequently. To what extent the perioperative infection rate is influenced by the individual immune-modulating drugs, is still disputed and should quantified on the basis the rheumatism orthopaedic patient collective of an orthopaedic university clinic. METHOD: The clinical progresses of patients after operative trea

Health Systems Strengthening to Promote Access to Care for Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases Globally.

Musculoskeletal health is essential to health, well-being, and independence across the life course. Musculoskeletal conditions including inflammatory joint diseases, osteoarthritis, back pain, osteoporosis, and fragility fractures are among the greatest causes of disability globally imposing a major burden on health and social care and economic impact also through lost productivity. Despite effective ways of preventing, treating, and rehabilitating these problems, lack of priority results in avoidable disability and costs. We consider how the expert community, through lived and learnt experien

Sequentially coupled musculoskeletal multibody and finite element simulation for biomechanical modeling of the human masticatory system.

INTRODUCTION: Finite element (FE) models of the mandible are widely used for biomechanical analysis and preoperative planning in craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, their predictive reliability depends on a realistic representation of geometry, material properties, boundary conditions, and muscular loading, for which no clear consensus currently exists. Therefore, we developed a sequentially coupled computational framework that integrates boundary conditions from a validated inverse-dynamic, scaled-generic musculoskeletal multibody simulation (MMBS) of the human masticatory system under unil

Temporomandibular Disorders Beyond Orofacial Pain: A Narrative Review of Musculoskeletal, Headache, and Central Nervous System Implications.

Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), bruxism, and occlusal dysfunction have traditionally been managed as localized orofacial conditions. Emerging evidence suggests, however, that the stomatognathic system may interact with broader neuromusculoskeletal and central pain-processing networks, with potential systemic and neurological implications. Methods: A structured narrative literature search was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, with the final targeted search performed in June 2026. Original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and relevant

Current Landscape of Short-T2 Imaging Techniques in the Musculoskeletal System: The Past, Present and Future.

Conventional MRI is limited in imaging tissues with short T2 relaxation times, such as bone, ligaments, and cartilage, due to their rapid signal decay. This limitation has spurred the development of specialized MRI techniques designed specifically for short-T2 tissue imaging. Traditional pulse sequences, including three-dimensional gradient echo (3D-GRE), susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI), and Fast Field Echo Resembling a CT using Restricted Echo-Spacing (FRACTURE), initially addressed some of these challenges but often lacked sufficient resolution or contrast differentiation. Recent advan

An Innovative Technique in Local Antibiotic Delivery Method in Open Infected Wounds of the Musculoskeletal System.

Bone and soft tissue infections are difficult problems in orthopedic surgery. Infections resulting in chronic osteomyelitis if established are difficult to eradicate. The delivery of local antibiotics for the treatment of open infected wounds of the musculo skeletal system is a more logical approach to treat these infections. Antibiotics given systemically are unable to achieve minimum inhibitory concentration in areas of infected wounds which are ischemic or relatively avascular. And also these antibiotics given over a prolonged period lead to significant toxicity and side effects and emergen

Functional and morphological divergence in the forelimb musculoskeletal system of scratch-digging subterranean mammals (Rodentia: Bathyergidae).

Whether the forelimb-digging apparatus of tooth-digging subterranean mammals has similar levels of specialization as compared to scratch-diggers is still unknown. We assessed the scapular morphology and forelimb musculature of all four solitary African mole rats (Bathyergidae): two scratch-diggers, Bathyergus suillus and Bathyergus janetta, and two chisel-tooth diggers, Heliophobius argenteocinereus and Georychus capensis. Remarkable differences were detected: Bathyergus have more robust neck, shoulder, and forearm muscles as compared to the other genera. Some muscles in Bathyergus were also f

Molecular structure and differential function of choline kinases CHKα and CHKβ in musculoskeletal system and cancer.

Choline, a hydrophilic cation, has versatile physiological roles throughout the body, including cholinergic neurotransmission, memory consolidation and membrane biosynthesis and metabolism. Choline kinases possess enzyme activity that catalyses the conversion of choline to phosphocholine, which is further converted to cytidine diphosphate-coline (CDP-choline) in the biosynthesis of phosphatidylcholine (PC). PC is a major constituent of the phospholipid bilayer which constitutes the eukaryotic cell membrane, and regulates cell signal transduction. Choline Kinase consists of three isoforms, CHKα
