The role of a regional bird collection in documenting avian diversity in a megadiverse country: The ornithological collection of the Natural History Museum of Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS-AV), Colombia.

Ornithological collections have long been of paramount importance in documenting the diversity and distribution of the avifauna of Colombia. Here, we summarize the taxonomic, temporal and spatial patterns of growth and coverage of the ornithological collection of the Natural History Museum of Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS-AV) for the period 1970-2024. UIS-AV houses 3253 bird skins of 550 species, representing almost 30% of Colombia's bird species, and 72% of the species historically collected in the Department of Santander. Most of the specimens in the collection were collected in t

Facial Bone Defects Associated with Lateral Facial Clefts Tessier Type 6, 7 and 8 in Syndromic Neurocristopathies: A Detailed Micro-CT Analysis on Historical Museum Specimens.

Lateral facial clefts are rare and often part of more complex syndromic neurocristopathies. According to Tessier's classification, they correspond to facial cleft numbers 6, 7 and 8. Using micro-computer tomography (micro-CT), we analyzed their underlying bone defects (resolution 50 and 55 µm/voxel) in the context of the known syndrome-specific genetic background. Lateral facial clefts were diagnosed in three severely affected museum specimens representing mandibulofacial dysostosis type Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS), acrofacial dysostosis syndrome of Rodriguez (AFD-Rod) and tetra-amelia syn

On two reports associated with James Wood-Mason and Alfred William Alcock published by the Indian Museum and the Indian Marine Survey between 1890 and 1891: implications for malacostracan nomenclature.

Two rare documents associated with the Indian Museum and the Indian Marine Survey for the administrative year April 1890 to March 1891 have been examined and found to have nomenclatural consequences for malacostracan crustaceans. Even though they constitute available published works according to the International Code for Zoological Nomenclature, these reports have rarely been cited. Dating these two publications is of importance as they make decapod scientific names available and, in a few instances, describe the same taxa. After searching the collections deposited in the Asian and African Ro

An updated and detailed taxonomical account of the large Branchiopoda (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Anostraca, Notostraca, Spinicaudata) from the Yale North India Expedition deposited in the Yale Peabody Natural History Museum.

We present an updated taxonomic account of a few of the large branchiopod species present in the collections of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. Our study shows that the Artemia species in the collections is not Artemia salina given the presence of spines at the base of the penis and its frontal knob morphology. This population cannot be assigned to any particular species due to lack of comparative material of other Artemia species and therefore, now reduces the authentic distribution record of Artemia salina to just one in the subcontinent. The morphology of eggs taken from the Str

[From otoscope to ophthalmoscope and back. The interwoven history of their invention and introduction into medical practice. Pictures from the history of otorhinolaryngology, illustrated by instruments from the collection of the Ingolstadt German Medical History Museum].

Friedrich Hofmann, medical officer in Burgsteinfurt, Westphalia, Germany, in 1841 described a concave mirror with a central aperture in it as the ideal instrument that allowed reflecting and focussing light into the external auditory canal and simultaneously inspecting the tympanic membrane without obstructing either the light or the view. He recommended his device also for the inspection of other concealed regions of the body. His invention was referred to by Martell Frank in his textbook of otology in 1845, but otherwise attracted no attention. Hermann Helmholtz, physiologist in Königsberg,

Monitoring airborne fine particles with biological and technological sensors for preventive conservation of cultural heritage sites.

Ambient particulate pollution in cities may lead to poor indoor air quality in cultural heritage (CH) institutions if preventive actions are not considered and implemented accordingly. This is one of the first studies to propose using technological and biological sensors to monitor both outdoor and indoor environments at CH sites. We studied particulate matter (PM) concentrations in real time using low-cost sensors in three Mexican museums and an archeological zone, where median PM2.5 concentrations exceed the 24-h Air Quality Guidelines level. Leveraging the biological sensor's ability (Tilla

[History of the tuning fork. I: Invention of the tuning fork, its course in music and natural sciences. Pictures from the history of otorhinolaryngology, presented by instruments from the collection of the Ingolstadt German Medical History Museum].

BACKGROUND: G. Cardano, physician, mathematician, and astrologer in Pavia, Italy, in 1550 described how sound may be perceived through the skull. A few years later H. Capivacci, also a physician in Padua, realized that this phenomenon might be used as a diagnostic tool for differentiating between hearing disorders located either in the middle ear or in the acoustic nerve. The German physician G. C. Schelhammer in 1684 was the first to use a common cutlery fork in further developing the experiments initiated by Cardano and Capivacci. For a long time to come, however, there was no demand for thi

[Treatment of acute and chronic laryngeal and tracheal stenoses in the 19th and beginning of the 20th century by tracheotomy, coniotomy, intubation and dilatation. Pictures from the history of otorhinolaryngology illustrated by instruments from the collection of the Ingolstadt Medical History Museum].

Although tracheotomy had been described in the Middle Ages and especially in the 17th century in writings (Fabricius d'Aquapendente 1620) and illustrations (Scultetus 1645), there was hardly any possibility of actually performing this operation as a life-saving intervention until the middle of the 19th century. It was only after suitable cannulae had been introduced by Trousseau in 1851 (double cannula with removeable insert) that tracheotomy became a routine procedure, and it was immediately carried out in a great many cases of diphtheria, croup, typhus, and lues, which often caused critical

Effectiveness of labels in digital art experience: psychophysiological and behavioral evidence.

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays museums make large use of digital materials (e.g., virtual tours) to attract visitors. Therefore, it is worthwhile investigating which variables affect the engagement with art outside the museum, and whether digital reproductions of artworks are as effective as museum originals in producing a satisfying aesthetic experience. METHODS: Here we tested the effectiveness of introducing additional informative materials on the artistic enjoyment of contemporary paintings presented on a computer screen. Naïve observers were exposed to essential and descriptive labels before vie

Pre-Hispanic Evidence of Cleft Lip and/or Palate in Mesoamerica.

In this letter, the authors present archeological evidence of the presence of cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) in pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica. During years 2016 and 2017, the authors visited 5 anthropology museums in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador, in search for pre-Hispanic archeological evidence of CLP, and 16 anthropomorphic figurines with evidence of CLP were identified; 9 at the Anahuacalli Museum, 6 at the National Anthropology Museum of Mexico, and 1 at the National Anthropology Museum of El Salvador. Fifteen of these ceramics originated from the shaft tombs (pre-Hispanic culture from wes

Prospecting for Zoonotic Pathogens by Using Targeted DNA Enrichment.

More than 60 zoonoses are linked to small mammals, including some of the most devastating pathogens in human history. Millions of museum-archived tissues are available to understand natural history of those pathogens. Our goal was to maximize the value of museum collections for pathogen-based research by using targeted sequence capture. We generated a probe panel that includes 39,916 80-bp RNA probes targeting 32 pathogen groups, including bacteria, helminths, fungi, and protozoans. Laboratory-generated, mock-control samples showed that we are capable of enriching targeted loci from pathogen D

Paleopathological interpretations of hypermobility syndrome in the art from ancient America.

Paleopathological representations of hypermobility syndrome were assumed in pre-Columbian artifacts from different ancient civilizations from America. Anthropomorphic sculptures from several museums and galleries visited on site or thru Internet show the human figure in contorted positions. These positions are only possible within well-trained individuals or persons with hyperextensibility of the joints.

Museotherapy as a method: an investigation into the emotional experiences of Chinese youth visitors.

Rising mental health challenges among Chinese youth necessitate new intervention models. This study explores the mechanisms of museotherapy workshops in regulating emotions and fostering self-discovery among university students, aiming to validate museums as therapeutic environments. Structured workshops were conducted at the Shanghai University Museum involving 81 students aged 17-22. By integrating Appraisal Theory and narrative therapy, the study employed a mixed-methods approach-utilizing text sentiment analysis (SPSSAU) and facial expression coding (FAST)-to evaluate participant responses

Syphilitic caries of the skull--the changing face of medicine.

This paper describes the specimens of caries sicca of calvaria due to syphilis in the collections of the Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The condition appears not to have been uncommon in the nineteenth century. The mechanism of bone destruction is discussed as is also the role of secondary infection and treatment with mercury.

A catalog of the types of Staphylinidae (Insecta, Coleoptera) deposited in the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales, Buenos Aires (MACN).

The type specimens (all current categories) of Staphylinidae deposited in this Museum are listed; names are recorded, most of them represented by name-bearing types (primary types). The specific and subspecific names are alphabetically ordered in a single list, followed by the generic names (and subgeneric ones, if they were stated) spelled as they were published; later combinations and/ or current binomina are mentioned insofar these are known to the authors. Two lists are added: 2. Specimens labeled as types of names not found in the literature and probably never published, or published as n

An evaluation of DNA extraction methods on historical and roadkill mammalian specimen.

Guidelines identifying appropriate DNA extraction methods for both museum and modern biological samples are scarce or non-existent for mammalian species. Yet, obtaining large-scale genetic material collections are vital for conservation and management purposes. In this study, we evaluated five protocols making use of either spin-column, organic solvents, or magnetic bead-based methods for DNA extraction on skin samples from both modern, traffic-killed (n = 10) and museum (n = 10) samples of European hedgehogs, Ericaneus europaeus. We showed that phenol-chloroform or silica column (NucleoSpin T
