Musical hallucinations associated with acquired deafness.

Two patients with auditory hallucinations beginning after a long history of progressive bilateral hearing loss were studied. The hallucinations included both unformed (tinnitus and irregular sounds of varying pitch and timbre) and formed (instrumental music, singing and voices) components, and were repetitive. They were affected by ambient noise levels; their content and speed were influenced by attentional and intentional factors. There was no evidence of global dementia, nor of epileptogenic or psychiatric disturbance. A combination of peripheral and associated central "disinhibition" may be

Body maps of the sensation of musical groove.

Rhythmic music often leads to an urge to move the body in time with the music. This urge to move can be a pleasurable experience. In psychology, we define the pleasurable wanting to move to music as groove. Here, we investigate where in the body these two groove components-movement and pleasure-are felt and whether the embodied sensations depend on the musical genre. Using a body sensation map paradigm, we found that the funk genre, which elicited high levels of groove, increased sensations across the whole body, including in the head, shoulders, upper chest, abdomen, arms, hands, hips, legs,

A Life with Cytokines, Accompanied by Friends and Music.

"I appeared as a dewdrop, and disappearing as it is. All of my beloved Naniwa (Osaka) is just a dream of dreams." This quote is the funeral ode of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who is regarded as a "Great Unifier of Japan" for his role before the Tokugawa Shogunate. Even though he was born into an extremely poor farming family, Toyotomi rose to the top nonhereditary position in the emperorship, called the kanpaku, or chief advisor to the emperor, at the end of the sixteenth century. I personally do not like the man because of the bloody dictatorships he represents, but this ode touches my heart; he must

The neuroscience of music perception: a narrative review.

The present review article explores the neuroscience of musical perception, examining the roles of specific brain regions in decoding and interpreting music. Musical perception engages multiple cortical and subcortical areas that work in an integrated manner to process musical elements such as melody, harmony, and rhythm. The paper reviews the current knowledge about the brain circuits involved, as well as pathological conditions that result in abnormalities of musical perception. In addition, the relationship between musical perception and neurological conditions such as epilepsy and Alzheime

[The sound and musical preferences of tympanic chord].

The tympanic chord is a part of the 7th cranial nerve (facial nerve), from which it branches off, runs through the middle ear and then joins the lingual nerve, a part of the 5th cranial nerve (mandibular nerve/trigeminal nerve). Despite its course through the ear, the tympanic chord does not carry auditory fibers, but rather sensory and parasympathetic fibers to the front part of the tongue and to the salivary glands. The cranial nerves V and VII have a common phylogenetic origin, establishing a close relationship between auditory and gustative sense. In German language "Geschmack" means both gu

A case of musical hallucinations induced by tramadol.

AIM: Although tramadol has been suggested to have a higher risk of producing hallucinations than other opioids, reports of musical hallucinations are extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old woman came to our department complaining of auditory hallucinations. She had been diagnosed with lumbar spinal canal stenosis associated with herniated and slipped disks. Due to persistent back pain, tramadol was started, and the dose was increased to 300 mg/day. The next day, she began to hear nursery rhymes, songs of the Ministry of Education, and folk songs. The musical auditory hallucinations

Congenital amusia-pathology of musical disorder.

Amusia also known as tone deafness affects roughly 1.5% population. Congenital amusia appears from birth and lasts over life span. Usually, it is not associated with other diseases. Its link to hearing impairment has been definitively excluded. Neurobiological studies point to asymmetrical processing of musical signals in auditory cortex of left and right brain hemispheres. The finding was supported by discovering microlesions in the right-side gray matter. Because of its connection with asymmetry, amusia has been classified to disconnection syndromes. Alternatively to the neurobiological expl

Music as an Adjunct to Opioid-Based Analgesia.

Epidemic increases in opioid use in the USA and globally highlight the need for effective adjunctive therapies to opioid-based analgesia. Given the shortcomings of behavioral adjuncts to opioid-based pain treatment, an urgent need exists for pain-related behavioral interventions that resonate with broad patient populations, can be delivered confidentially in any environment, and can incorporate new content automatically. Understanding the potential for automated behavioral therapies like music therapy in modulating the experience of pain may unlock methods to transition patients to lower doses

Neural correlates of specific musical anhedonia.

Although music is ubiquitous in human societies, there are some people for whom music holds no reward value despite normal perceptual ability and preserved reward-related responses in other domains. The study of these individuals with specific musical anhedonia may be crucial to understand better the neural correlates underlying musical reward. Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that musically induced pleasure may arise from the interaction between auditory cortical networks and mesolimbic reward networks. If such interaction is critical for music-induced pleasure to emerge, then those i

Historical perspectives on music as a cause of disease.

The relationship between music and medicine is generally understood in the benign context of music therapy, but, as this chapter shows, there is a long parallel history of medical theories that suggest that music can cause real physical and mental illness. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the idea of music as an expression of universal harmony was challenged by a more mechanistic model of nervous stimulation. By the 1790s, there was a substantial discourse on the dangers of musical overstimulation to health in medicine, literature, and etiquette books. During the nineteenth cen

Reported herein is a case of obsessive-compulsive disorder with persistent and distressing musical obsessions along with other symptoms. Advanced source analysis of electroencephalographic data indicated high spectral power over the bifrontal region. The musical symptoms were resistant to pharmacotherapy but there was some reduction in frequency and duration of musical obsessions with thought-stopping technique.

Current advances in the cognitive neuroscience of music.

The study of music perception and cognition is one of the oldest topics in experimental psychology. The last 20 years have seen an increased interest in understanding the functional neuroanatomy of music processing in humans, using a variety of technologies including fMRI, PET, ERP, MEG, and lesion studies. We review current findings in the context of a rich intellectual history of research, organized by the cognitive systems underlying different aspects of human musical behavior. We pay special attention to the perception of components of musical processing, musical structure, laterality effe

Musical alexia with recovery: a personal account.

I describe the experience of an acute loss of ability to read music and play the piano accurately and expressively following an embolic infarct of the right angular and supramarginal gyri in a setting of chronic migraine. Other parietal deficits included a small visual field defect, visual hallucinations, prosopagnosia, topographical disorientation, disturbance of perception of velocity of moving objects and dyscalculia. Recovery began within a month of the ictus after instituting a regular practice routine. The ability to read and play polyphony recovered before the ability to read homophonic

[Musical memory preserved in an amnesic syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: In amnesic syndromes, it's usually to see dissociation between episodic, semantic and procedural memory. However, a few reports have been found about musical memory's processing and the relation with classic memory systems. AIM: To describe the musical's abilities preserved in a patient with amnesic syndrome and discuss possible neuropsychological and neurobiological bases implicated. CASE REPORT: A 28-years-old woman presenting with amnesic syndrome is reported. Following a carbon monoxide encephalophaty and subsequent hypoxia she remained in coma for 10 days with evidence of

Musical hallucinations in patients with Lyme disease.

Musical hallucinations are poorly understood auditory hallucinations that occur in patients with otologic or neurologic diseases. We report the first cases of musical hallucinations in two patients with neurologic Lyme disease. Both subjects were women with clinical and laboratory evidence of chronic Lyme disease, progressive neurologic dysfunction, and abnormal magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. There was no evidence of hearing loss in either case. Musical hallucinations had a sudden onset and took the form of patriotic or operatic music. The auditory hallucinations disappeared with int

Quetiapine for hypnogogic musical release hallucinations.

Musical release hallucinations are complex auditory phenomena, affecting mostly the deaf geriatric population, in which individuals hear vocal or instrumental music. Progressive hearing loss from otosclerosis disrupts the usual external sensory stimuli necessary to inhibit the emergence of memory traces within the brain, thereby "releasing" previously recorded perceptions. Responses to conventional antipsychotic agents have been variable and extrapyramidal and other side effects have limited their use. We report the first case of hypnogogic release hallucinations successfully treated with the
