The Influence of Modernization and Disease on the Gastric Microbiome of Orang Asli, Myanmars and Modern Malaysians.

The present study explored the differences in gastric microbiome between three distinct populations of Southeast Asia. These include the isolated Orang Asli population and modern Malaysians, as well as patients from Myanmar, the least developed country in the region. All 79 subjects recruited in this study had Helicobacter pylori infection. Based on alpha diversity analysis, Orang Asli had the richest and most diverse gastric microbiome, followed by Myanmar and modern Malaysian groups. Beta diversity analysis revealed significant separation of samples between different populations. These obser

The clinical characteristics of adults with rheumatic heart disease in Yangon, Myanmar: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a major cause of premature death in low and middle-income countries. The greatest barrier to RHD control is neglect of the disease in national health policies and a lack of prevalence data that might inform control efforts. Myanmar is making remarkable progress against many infectious diseases, but there are almost no data to define the clinical burden of RHD in the country. This prospective audit was performed in an adult medical ward of a tertiary-referral hospital in Yangon, to gain an insight into the prevalence of RHD in Myanmar. PRINCIPAL FIN

Use of Rapid Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays for Serological Screening of Melioidosis in Myanmar.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, the etiologic agent of melioidosis, is an important but under-recognized cause of disease in the tropics. Although first described over a century ago as a septicemic illness associated with morphine addicts in Rangoon, Burma, there is little information regarding the incidence of melioidosis in present-day Myanmar. To address this issue, we used two recently developed and validated serological assays to detect B. pseudomallei-specific antibodies in 124 serum samples obtained from febrile patients in the delta region of Myanmar. Using cutoff values derived from cultur

Malaria epidemiology in central Myanmar: identification of a multi-species asymptomatic reservoir of infection.

BACKGROUND: The spread of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum is a global health concern. Myanmar stands at the frontier of artemisinin-resistant P. falciparum. Myanmar also has the highest reported malaria burden in Southeast Asia; it is integral in the World Health Organization's plan to eliminate malaria in Southeast Asia, yet few epidemiological data exist for the general population in Myanmar. METHODS: This cross-sectional, probability household survey was conducted in Phyu township, Bago Region (central Myanmar), during the wet season of 2013. Interviewers collected clinical and

Chronic Cystoisospora belli infection in an immunocompetent Myanmar refugee - microscopy is not sensitive enough.

BACKGROUND: Cystoisosporiasis is an opportunistic infection seen more commonly in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Although uncommon, Cystoisospora infection can occur in immunocompetent individuals but tend to be benign and self-limiting. Chronic infection however, has been described but diagnosis can often be challenging and requires a high clinical index of suspicion. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of delayed diagnosis of Cystoisospora belli (C. belli) in an immunocompetent 28-year-old refugee from Myanmar. She had a history of chronic diarrhea where exhaustive inves

Therapeutic responses of Plasmodium vivax malaria to chloroquine and primaquine treatment in northeastern Myanmar.

Chloroquine-primaquine (CQ-PQ) continues to be the frontline therapy for radical cure of Plasmodium vivax malaria. Emergence of CQ-resistant (CQR) P. vivax parasites requires a shift to artemisinin combination therapies (ACTs), which imposes a significant financial, logistical, and safety burden. Monitoring the therapeutic efficacy of CQ is thus important. Here, we evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of CQ-PQ for P. vivax malaria in northeast Myanmar. We recruited 587 patients with P. vivax monoinfection attending local malaria clinics during 2012 to 2013. These patients received three daily do

Unilateral Linguofacial Trunk of the External Carotid Artery: A Cadaveric Case Report From Myanmar.

BACKGROUND The external carotid artery (ECA) supplies major extracranial structures of the head and neck and typically gives rise to 8 branches. Among its ventral branches, the lingual and facial arteries normally arise independently; however, they may occasionally share a common origin, known as the linguofacial trunk (LFT). Recognizing these variants is crucial for surgeons and radiologists to prevent surgical errors and ensure effective treatment. CASE REPORT During a routine cadaveric dissection in the Department of Anatomy, University of Medicine 1, Yangon, Myanmar, we systematically exam

Enhancing Primaquine Adherence for Plasmodium vivax Malaria: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial in Myanmar.

The rising prevalence of Plasmodium vivax (P. vivax) malaria challenges elimination efforts, particularly in the Greater Mekong Subregion, although adherence to the required 14-day primaquine (PQ) regimen remains a major obstacle. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a family-administered, directly observed treatment intervention in improving adherence to PQ among patients with confirmed P. vivax from October 2022 to March 2023. A cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted in five intervention villages and five control villages in Kachin State, Myanmar. A total of 427 patients in t

Molecular epidemiological surveillance of respiratory syncytial virus infection in Myanmar from 2019 to 2023.

To evaluate genetic changes in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) between 2019 and 2023, we analyzed RSV strains from Myanmar before and after the COVID- 19 pandemic. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) positive samples from children presenting with acute respiratory infections at outpatient clinics in Yangon were sequenced to determine the genotype. Phylogenetic and molecular evolutionary analyses were conducted using the Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to construct the time-scale Maximum Clade Credibility tree. Of 1127 samples, 104 (9.2%) RSV-A and 233 (20.7%) RSV-B were pos

Malaria care-seeking behaviours and infection prevalence among short-term Myanmar migrants in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: The recent resurgence of malaria in western Thailand has coincided with increased cross-border migration from Myanmar following political unrest. As short-term migrants from endemic areas may contribute to sustained local transmission, this study examined their malaria care-seeking behaviours and infection prevalence. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted during March-April 2025 in six malaria-endemic villages of Tha Song Yang District, Tak Province, western Thailand. A structured questionnaire was administered, including a nine-item section on care-seekin

Active Tuberculosis Screening via a Mobile Health App in Myanmar: Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: A mobile app that calculates a tuberculosis (TB) risk score based on individual social and pathological characteristics has been shown to be a better predictor of the risk of contracting TB than conventionally used TB signs and symptoms (TBSS) in Myanmar, where the TB burden is high. Its cost-effectiveness, however, has not yet been assessed. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the incremental costs of this mobile app and of chest x-rays (CXRs) in averting disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) among missed cases of active TB in the population being screened. METHODS: Elemen

Prevalence and molecular analysis of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Chin State, Myanmar.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is caused by X-linked recessive disorderliness. It induces severe anemia when a patient with G6PD deficiency is exposed to oxidative stress that occurs with administration of an antimalarial drug, primaquine. The distribution of G6PD deficiency remains unknown while primaquine has been used for malaria treatment in Myanmar. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of G6PD deficiency and its variants in Chin State, Myanmar. Among 322 participants, 18 (11 males and 7 females) demonstrated a G6PD deficiency. Orissa variant was dominant in

Comparison of Latent Tuberculosis Infections among General versus Tuberculosis Health Care Workers in Myanmar.

Health care workers (HCWs) in high tuberculosis (TB) prevalence countries have to care for many cases, thus increasing their risk of infection. The objective of the study was to compare the prevalence of latent TB infection (LTBI) between general HCWs and TB HCWs, and also to explore the associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar from September 2019 to January 2020. Staff working at two general hospitals were recruited. Those allocated for TB care were classified as TB HCWs, while the remaining were classified as general HCWs. Participants were interviewe
