Research Progress and Management Strategies for the Common Mycotoxin Contamination of Traditional Chinese Medicines.

With rapid globalization and the increasing demand for traditional Chinese medicines, quality and safety has become a critical priority for both domestic and international markets. However, traditional Chinese medicines are susceptible to contamination by pathogenic microorganisms during the process of cultivation, growth, processing, storage, and transportation, which can lead to mycotoxin contamination that adversely affect the quality and safety of traditional Chinese medicines, and may pose potential threats to human health. This review summarizes mycotoxin contamination, the common detect

Real-time CO2 monitoring for early detection of grain spoilage and mycotoxin contamination.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the use of real-time CO2, temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) sensors as indicators of stored grain quality management, specifically for early detection of mould activity and mycotoxin contamination. Initial experiments were conducted using mini-silos containing naturally contaminated wheat grain (1.5 kg) stored at different moisture contents of 15-30% (water activity, aw = 0.78 to 0.98), to evaluate their effects on grain respiration. RESULTS: Respiration rates and dry matter losses increased with grain moisture content. A larger-scale, nine-mon

Computer-aided design of enzyme-polyelectrolyte complexes for mycotoxin degradation at acidic pH.

The growing efforts towards preparation and investigation of supramolecular complexes formed by proteins and other polymers are determined by their promising biochemical and physical properties. In the current work, interaction of 6 enzymes, catalyzing transformation of various mycotoxins, with 8 polymers of variable structure and length was simulated to predict the best possible complex composition. The localization and portion of occupied areas on the enzyme surface varied widely, thus allowing the selection of those enzyme-polymer pairs for maximal retention of enzyme activity. Glucose oxid

Effects of a Phytogenic Mycotoxin Detoxifier on Oxidative Status, Health, and Performance in Dairy Sheep.

Mycotoxins are common feed contaminants that can affect the health, immune function, and productivity of ruminants by causing oxidative stress and organ dysfunction. In this field study, the effects of a phytogenic multicomponent mycotoxin detoxifier on oxidative status, liver function, udder health, and productive parameters were investigated in dairy ewes. One hundred clinically healthy ewes were randomly assigned to either a control group or a treatment group, with the latter receiving 1.5 kg/ton of the detoxifier over a 90-day period during lactation. The detoxifying agent contained adsorp

Negative Effects of Occurrence of Mycotoxins in Animal Feed and Biological Methods of Their Detoxification: A Review.

Secondary metabolic products of molds, called mycotoxins, negatively affect animal health and production. They constitute a significant problem in veterinary and medical sciences, and their presence has been confirmed in feed all over the world. Applying appropriate agricultural practices and ensuring proper storage conditions significantly reduces the contamination of agricultural products with mycotoxins. However, this does not guarantee that raw materials are completely free from contamination. Many detoxification methods are currently used, but their insufficient effectiveness and negative

Urinary Biomarkers of Mycotoxin Induced Nephrotoxicity-Current Status and Expected Future Trends.

The intensifying world-wide spread of mycotoxigenic fungal species has increased the possibility of mycotoxin contamination in animal feed and the human food chain. Growing evidence shows the deleterious toxicological effects of mycotoxins from infants to adults, while large population-based screening programs are often missing to identify affected individuals. The kidney functions as the major excretory system, which makes it particularly vulnerable to nephrotoxic injury. However, few studies have attempted to screen for kidney injury biomarkers in large, mycotoxin-exposed populations. As a r

Application of plant derived compounds to control fungal spoilage and mycotoxin production in foods.

Food decay by spoilage fungi causes considerable economic losses and constitutes a health risk for consumers due to the potential for fungi to produce mycotoxins. The indiscriminate use of synthetic antifungals has led to the development of resistant strains which has necessitated utilization of higher concentrations, with the consequent increase in toxic residues in food products. Numerous studies have demonstrated that plant extracts contain diverse bioactive components that can control mould growth. The metabolites produced by plants are a promising alternative because plants generate a wid

Occurrence of estrogenic mycotoxin - Zearalenone in aqueous environmental samples with various NOM content.

Zearalenone is a mycotoxin produced by some Fusarium species in food and feed. Toxicity of ZEA and its metabolites is related to the chemical structure of the mycotoxins, similar to naturally occurring estrogens. Currently, there is increasing awareness of the significance of fungi and their toxic metabolites in water. Thus it was considered essential to determine the concentration of estrogenic toxin in surface waters, groundwater and wastewater in Poland. The application of ZearalaTest immunoaffinity columns for zearalenone determination by HPLC method in water samples characterized by diffe

In vitro transformation of the Fusarium mycotoxins deoxynivalenol and zearalenone by the normal gut microflora of pigs.

The biotransformation of the Fusarium mycotoxins deoxynivalenol and zearalenone by the normal bacterial gut flora of pigs was examined in this in vitro study. For that purpose, suspensions of intestinal contents (duodenum, jejunum, caecum, colon, rectum) of porcine origin were incubated anaerobically with deoxynivalenol (DON) or zearalenone (ZEA). DON and ZEA were degraded by the flora of the caudal segments (caecum, colon, rectum) of the gut--particularly the colon content--whereas the microorganisms of the cranial segments (duodenum, jejunum) exhibited no transforming activity. DON was showe

Central effects of the neurotropic mycotoxin fumitremorgin A in the rabbit (I). Effects on the spinal cord.

Effects of a potent neurotropic mycotoxin, fumitremorgin A (FTA), on the spinal cord were studied, using rabbits lightly anesthetized with urethane and chloralose. Spontaneous discharges of L7 spinal ventral roots and common peroneal nerves were increased after intravenous injection of 100-200 micrograms/kg of FTA. Their abnormal discharge pattern represented the convulsive effect of FTA. Spinal monosynaptic reflexes became irregular in amplitude, with a slight predominance of smaller reflexes. Polysynaptic reflexes were inhibited in many cases. These FTA-induced changes in ventral root discha

Climate change amplifies global mycotoxin exposure: Emerging risks and sustainable solutions.

Climate change intensifies mycotoxin contamination through rising temperatures, elevated CO2, and altered precipitation. Global surveys reveal a high and widespread prevalence of major mycotoxins in staple cereals, with low-income countries bearing the greatest burden. This escalating contamination poses a growing threat to global food security, compromising both food availability and safety. To mitigate these risks, we propose four actions: establish a predictive global surveillance system integrating climate-crop-fungal models, deploy field-ready biosensors, scale up climate-resilient agricu

Application of Metal-Organic Framework-Based Electrochemiluminescence Sensors for Mycotoxin Detection in Food.

Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by filamentous fungi, which extensively contaminate agricultural products such as grains and nuts. Common mycotoxins, including aflatoxin B1, ochratoxin A, and deoxynivalenol, can induce liver cancer, kidney damage, neural tube defects, and immune suppression, necessitating highly sensitive detection methods to ensure food safety. Conventional techniques are limited by complex procedures and insufficient sensitivity. Electrochemiluminescence (ECL), owing to its high sensitivity, low background signal, and rapid response, has emerged as a prom

Comparing the Effects of Glyphosate and Mycotoxins in the Human Follicular Microenvironment: An Exploratory Exposome Study.

Background: Exposure to anthropogenic and/or natural (e.g., herbicides or mycotoxins) endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been linked to several reproductive disorders. Glyphosate (GLY), a common agricultural agent, is a potential element of the exposome that bioaccumulates and has potential endocrine and oxidative stress-related effects. However, data on its presence in the human ovarian microenvironment remain limited. Our study examined GLY levels in follicular fluid (ff) and serum and their relationships with oxidative stress markers, reproductive hormones, and stress hormones in wom
