Corneal abrasions result from cutting, scratching, or abrading the thin, protective, clear coat of the exposed anterior portion of the ocular epithelium. These injuries cause pain, tearing, photophobia, foreign body sensation, and a gritty feeling. Symptoms can be worsened by exposure to light, blinking, and rubbing the injured surface against the inside of the eyelid. Visualizing the cornea under cobalt-blue filtered light after the application of fluorescein can confirm the diagnosis. PURPOSE: To highlight an unusual organism causing a unilateral endophthalmitis by transplacental spread.
METHOD: We report a case of Plesiomonas shigelloides endophthalmitis, presenting in a newborn, with co-existing septicaemia and meningitis. There was a significant maternal history of diarrhoea associated with the ingestion of oysters 2 weeks prior to delivery.
RESULT: The endophthalmitis was treated with parenteral antibiotics and topical mydriatics with complete resolution, although subsequent assessment of the affected eye suggests a poor visual outcome.

BACKGROUND: Rifabutin is a new semisynthetic rifamycin which is approved in Germany for clinical application since 1/15/95. The drug is used for prophylaxis and treatment of Mycobacterium avium intracellulare (MAI) infection in patients with AIDS. In 1994 it was reported that rifabutin can cause anterior uveitis. Two infants, aged three days and six weeks, respectively, presented with dense extensive persistent pupillary membranes as sporadic isolated findings. A clear central pupillary aperture was unable to be achieved with mydriatic agents. The patients were treated by surgical removal of the membranes at age five days and six months respectively. METHODS: This prospective study involved 80 consecutive high myopia patients undergoing implantation of a V4c ICL. Tuberculous uveitis usually appears as chronic anterior uveitis or disseminated choroiditis. From 1982 to 1989, we conducted a retrospective study of 23 patients with presumed tuberculous uveitis. All patients had a positive tuberculin purified protein derivative skin test. The diagnosis was based on history, positive skin test, and physical examination. The mydriatic action of sympathomimetic eyedrops after a therapeutic dose of ergotamine was measured in migraine patients with and without histories of long-term ergotamine abuse. Mydriasis induced by the postsynaptic alpha 1-agonist phenylephrine was similar in both groups of patients tested, whereas pupillary dilation caused by the release of noradrenaline tyramine was markedly greater in patients with histories of ergotamine abuse. Mydriatic responses to eyedrops containing the indirect acting sympathomimetic amines tyramine, hydroxyamphetamine, and pholedrine have been compared in 10 healthy subjects. Pholedrine, the n-methyl derivative of hydroxyamphetamine, at a concentration of 1% had effects similar to those produced by 0.5% hydroxyamphetamine itself.
