Trichotillomania in Children.

BACKGROUND: Trichotillomania is an often underdiagnosed condition. Little is known about trichotillomania in childhood. We aimed to analyze the characteristics of children with trichotillomania to increase information on this condition. METHODS: A retrospective study of an electronic database was performed in a tertiary children's hospital. Information from patients with trichotillomania was systematically classified under the categories 'who', 'what', 'when', 'where', 'why', and 'how'. RESULTS: A total of 33 patients had a diagnosis of trichotillomania (28 females, 5 males; peak age between

Impulse control disorders in adults with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Little is known about impulse control disorders (ICDs) in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Although studies have examined ICD comorbidity in OCD, no previous studies have examined clinical correlates of ICD comorbidity in a large sample of individuals with a primary diagnosis of OCD. We examined rates and clinical correlates of comorbid ICDs in 293 consecutive subjects with lifetime DSM-IV OCD (56.8% females; mean age=40.6+/-12.9 years). Comorbidity data were obtained with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. ICDs were diagnosed with structured clinical interviews

Sapap3 and pathological grooming in humans: Results from the OCD collaborative genetics study.

SAP90/PSD95-associated protein (SAPAP) family proteins are post-synaptic density (PSD) components that interact with other proteins to form a key scaffolding complex at excitatory (glutamatergic) synapses. A recent study found that mice with a deletion of the Sapap3 gene groomed themselves excessively, exhibited increased anxiety-like behaviors, and had cortico-striatal synaptic defects, all of which were preventable with lentiviral-mediated expression of Sapap3 in the striatum; the behavioral abnormalities were also reversible with fluoxetine. In the current study, we sought to determine whet

Self-induced dermatoses: A great imitator.

The self-induced dermatoses represent about 2% of dermatology patient visits, and include the recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRB) (skin-picking or excoriation disorder, trichotillomania, onychophagia and onychotillomania), dermatitis artefacta, and features of other psychiatric disorders, for example, secondary to excessive grooming in body dysmorphic disorder, skin picking in delusional infestation, or secondary to self-harm in depressive disease. Among the BFRBs, onychophagia and onychotillomania are most likely to be associated with lesions that mimic other dermatologic condi

Poor oral habits and malocclusions after usage of orthodontic pacifiers: an observational study on 3-5 years old children.

BACKGROUND: Pacifier sucking habit has been associated in the literature with alterations of dental occlusion, and it could be a predisposing factor for other poor oral habits among children. Orthodontic pacifiers have been introduced in the market aiming to reduce these disadvantages caused by the conventional type of pacifiers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of poor oral habits and malocclusions, after usage of orthodontic pacifiers in children with primary dentition. METHODS: A sample of 198 pre-school children, aged 3-5 years, (96 males and 102 females) who had exclu

Higher order dimensions in the DSM/ICD obsessive-compulsive and related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders are rarely included in hierarchical dimensional models of psychopathology due to limited available data. The current study examined the higher order structure of the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) in the DSM/ICD. METHODS: Measures of OCRD severity were administered in community (N = 1110) and clinical (N = 690) samples. Confirmatory factor analyses were used to determine the optimal structure of OCRD symptoms, and structural regression models to explore association with indicators from the internalizing, externalizing and

An Examination of Impulsivity and Metacognitions in Adolescents with Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior Disorders.

Trichotillomania (TTM), skin-picking disorder (SPD), and nail-biting (NB) are classified as Body-Focused Repetitive Disorders (BFRBDs), which share characteristics with both obsessive-compulsive and impulse control disorders. This study aimed to compare impulsivity, metacognitions, and clinical characteristics across BFRBDs. Ninety adolescents (aged 10-18 years) with BFRBDs and 40 healthy controls (HC) completed the Revised Children's Anxiety and Depression Scale-Child Version (RCADS-CV), the Metacognitions Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (MCQ-CA), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-Br

Trichotillomania in childhood: case series and review.

Trichotillomania is a relatively common cause of childhood alopecia. We report our observations of 10 children with trichotillomania seen over a 2-year period at Texas Children's Hospital. Patient ages ranged from 9 to 14 years (mean: 11.3 years) with an equal gender ratio. The duration of hair-pulling ranged from 1 month to 10 years (median: 4.6 months). The scalp alone was affected in 8 cases, the scalp and eyelashes in 1 case, and the eyelashes alone in 1 case. The frontal scalp and vertex were the most common sites affected. Associated findings included nail-biting in 2 cases, "picking" of
