This article presents an ecologically valid transdiagnostic framework regarding narrative identity disturbances in psychopathology. Problems with self and identity are distressing, disruptive to everyday functioning, and central to theoretical models of recovery. Yet these problems are sorely understudied, in part due to differences in concepts, theories, and measurement models across disorder-specific literatures. Disorder-specific theories are useful for understanding the etiology of disturbances to self and identity. However, while root causes may vary across disorders, their effects on exp

OBJECTIVES: Psychologists frequently deliver indirect psychological interventions in mental health inpatient settings to support staff to reflect upon and improve their clinical practice. However, research into these interventions is sparse. Therefore, this study aimed to undertake a systematic review and narrative synthesis of the indirect psychological interventions used in mental health inpatient settings.
METHODS: MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Embase were searched for eligible studies and forward-citation searching was undertaken. A narrative synthesis was undertaken to synthesize results. The qu

This article describes a process of creating an ethnographic comic about injection drug use and hepatitis C, based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Norway. The project and the graphic publication titled The Virus were a collaboration between a social anthropologist, a graphic artist, and individuals who inject illegal drugs and are aimed at reducing bodily, social, and narrative harms related to drug use. The article argues that structurally informed interventions, such as this project, which account for the social, economic, and epistemological inequalities, benefit from taking phenomen

The conspicuous absence of personal articulations of miscarriage in mainstream discourses attests to the stigmatised nature of the experience. Notably, there exists a growing body of infertility comics which foreground the authors' lived realities of miscarriage. In a close reading of select graphic memoirs such as Jenell Johnson's Present/Perfect, Paula Knight's The Facts of Life, Phoebe Potts' Good Eggs, and Diane Noomin's Baby Talk, this article examines how the authors use comics to foreground their predicament. In so doing, the essay argues that these narratives attempt to accord a cultur

This essay recounts the author's journey with her father during his prolonged decline due to dementia. The experience pushed her to break out of the confines of conventional scholarly research in her academic field of architectural history to a multi-disciplinary consideration of nineteenth-century environmental, sensory and horticultural therapies for the mentally ill. During her father's illness, she discovered the tangible therapeutic benefits of momentary engagements with his environment through his five senses and through the emotional filter of poetry. This reorientation to sensory and p

Antimicrobial resistance is a common iatrogenic complication of modern life and medical care. One of the most demonstrative examples is the exponential increase in the incidence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) production among Enterobacteriaceae, which is the most common human pathogens outside of the hospital settings. Infections resulting from ESBL-producing bacteria are associated with devastating outcomes, now affecting even previously healthy individuals. This development poses an enormous burden and threat to public health. This paper aims to narrate the evolving epidemiology o

Post-traumatic stress disorder represents a substantial global mental health burden, particularly in the face of cumulative violence, forced migration, and structural inequities. Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET) configures a brief trauma-focused intervention that supports the reconstruction of autobiographical memory by the chronological narration of life events. By integrating fragmented traumatic experiences into a coherent narrative, NET facilitates emotional processing and restores continuity to disrupted life stories. This regional case series examines the integration of NET into the ment

Beriberi outbreaks in the São João de Deus Asylum, 1897-1904, are presented, focusing on studies by legist physician Nina Rodrigues. The goals were: to trace the steps of the original investigation of an unknown disease; to understand the purpose of excluding mentally ills in an asylum institution. Methodology encompassed occurence narration and qualitative analytical procedures for the documental interpretation of voluntary and involuntary testimonies, combined with statistical treatment of measurable data. Frequent and progressive outbreaks of beriberi have caused two-thirds of the asylum de

The article argues that Beckett's Trilogy stages the effects of a lobotomy operation on a potentially politically subversive writer, and that the consequences of the operation can be traced in both the retreat of the narrator(s) of the Trilogy into the mind and into comatose mental states and in the detail of the operation itself, based on the 'icepick' lobotomies performed by neurologist Walter Freeman in the late 1940s and early 1950s. To write about extreme psychiatric situations in the post-war period is necessarily to invoke the political uses of psychosurgery with which this article enga

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by memory loss and cognitive impairment. Phonological, syntactic, semantic and discursive aspects of language may also be affected. Analysis of micro- and macrolinguistic abilities of discourse may assist in diagnosing AD. The aim of this study was to identify changes in the discourse (lexical errors and syntactic index) of AD patients.
METHODS: 121 elderly subjects narrated a story based on a seven-figure picture description.
RESULTS: Patients with AD presented more word-finding difficulties, revisions and repetitions, and the syntactic

Haemoglobinopathies are a series of hereditary genetic diseases which, if left untreated, usually prove fatal. The present paper discusses how one of the most important of these, beta-thalassaemia, afflicted the island of Cyprus in the last century and almost threatened to eliminate the whole population. In narrating the medical facts of the disease we point out the moral dilemmas which medical personnel, the state and the church had to deal with before they embarked on a program for the treatment and prevention of beta-thalassaemia. After careful study of the program we conclude that, althoug

Background : This study sought to predict time to patient hemodynamic stabilization during trauma resuscitations of hypotensive patient encounters using electronic medical record (EMR) data. Methods: This observational cohort study leveraged EMR data from a nine-hospital academic system composed of Level I, Level II, and nontrauma centers. Injured, hemodynamically unstable (initial systolic blood pressure, <90 mm Hg) emergency encounters from 2015 to 2020 were identified. Stabilization was defined as documented subsequent systolic blood pressure of >90 mm Hg. We predicted time to stabilization

Despite reading being an essential and almost universal skill in the developed world, reading proficiency varies substantially from person to person. To study why, the fMRI field is beginning to turn from single-word or nonword reading tasks to naturalistic stimuli like connected text and listening to stories. To study reading development in children just beginning to read, listening to stories is an appropriate paradigm because speech perception and phonological processing are important for, and are predictors of, reading proficiency. Our study examined the relationship between behavioral rea

OBJECTIVE: This video tutorial identifies key anatomic landmarks useful in identifying the path of the most commonly encountered pelvic nerves in benign gynecologic surgery.
DESIGN: This is a narrated overview of commonly encountered pelvic nerves during benign gynecology, their origin, sensory, and motor function, as well as sequelae related to injury.
SETTING: The unintended injury of pelvic neural connections can be a complication of any pelvic surgery, however, surgery for malignancy or endometriosis may increase the likelihood of encountering these nerves. The majority of focus surround

Patients suffering from severe aphasia have to rely on non-verbal means of communication to convey a message. However, to date it is not clear which patients are able to do so. Clinical experience indicates that some patients use non-verbal communication strategies like gesturing very efficiently whereas others fail to transmit semantic content by non-verbal means. Concerns have been expressed that limb apraxia would affect the production of communicative gestures. Research investigating if and how apraxia influences the production of communicative gestures, led to contradictory outcomes. The

The primary goal of this study was to determine whether expressive language skills contribute to adaptive behavior (e.g., socialization and daily living skills) in children, adolescents, and young adults with Down syndrome (DS) whilst controlling for age and nonverbal cognitive ability. Expressive language was assessed using the psychometrically validated Expressive Language Sampling (ELS) conversation and narration procedures. The language produced was transcribed and analyzed to yield measures of expressive vocabulary, syntax, and intelligibility. Socialization and daily living skills of par
