Occipital condyle fracture in a patient with neck pain.

BACKGROUND: Occipital condyle fractures (OCF) are rare traumatic injuries and are of critical clinical importance because of the anatomic considerations of the occipitoatlantoaxial joint complex. OCF can be a diagnostic challenge because of the inability to diagnose this injury with plain radiographs. This is especially true in the emergency department (ED) setting. A high degree of clinical suspicion and careful investigation of the craniocervical junction is warranted in patients presenting to the ED with head and cervical trauma. FINDINGS: We present a case of a 45-year-old male who presen

Evaluating the head posture of dentists with no neck pain.

INTRODUCTION: Dentistry is one of the professions that requires a high degree of concentration during the treatment of patients. There are many predisposing factors, affecting dentists when working on the patient's teeth, including neck flexion, arm abduction and inflexible postural positions, which may put them at the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders related to the neck. Although dentists with long records of service show different levels of pain and discomfort in their necks, there is no evidence regarding whether younger dentists report neck pain before the onset of an abnormal

Tornwaldt cyst: a cause of neck pain and stiffness.

BACKGROUND: Between 75 and 89% of residents living in long-term care facilities have limited mobility. Nurses as well as other licensed and unlicensed personnel directly involved in resident care are in a key position to promote and maintain the mobility of care-dependent persons. This requires a certain level of competence. Kinaesthetics is a training concept used to increase nursing staff's interaction and movement support skills for assisting care-dependent persons in their daily activities. This study aims to develop and test an observation instrument for assessing nursing staff's competen

Is it time for a population health approach to neck pain?

OBJECTIVE: Neck pain and its associated disorders (NPAD) cause significant health burden in the general population and after road traffic and occupational injury. Individual-level health care treatments have been well studied, but population-health approaches to this problem have not. We used a best-evidence synthesis to examine population-level approaches to the prevention and control of NPAD. METHODS: The systematic review examined studies published between 1980 and 2006 that addressed the incidence, prevalence, risk factors, prevention, cost, assessment and classification, interventions, a

Anterior discectomy and fusion for the management of neck pain.

STUDY DESIGN: Data were collected prospectively on 38 patients who underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for neck pain with no symptoms or signs of radiculopathy or myelopathy. OBJECTIVES: To determine the changes in pain and function after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for nonradicular neck pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There is considerable controversy regarding the role of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion for neck pain in the absence of radiculopathy or myelopathy. Although no studies have addressed this specific and common problem, it is known that anteri

A pain in the neck in pregnancy: cervical spinal tuberculosis.

This paper describes a case of spinal tuberculosis diagnosed at 29 weeks' gestation in a primigravid Indian woman. The report illustrates the primary problems in suspecting disease, recognizing the diverse clinical presentations and initiating investigations to confirm the diagnosis. In most cases, M. tuberculosis, once recognized and appropriately treated, should result in an excellent prognosis.

Neck pain in the elderly: common causes and management.

Neck pain is common in the elderly. An outline of the relevant anatomy and pathological conditions which affect the cervical spine and an approach to diagnosis are presented. Intrinsic causes of pain arise in the vertebral column itself--arthritis, discogenic disorders, trauma, tumors, and infection; in the cervical musculature--myofascial pain syndrome, torticollis, and whiplash; and in the spinal cord from tumors. Differentiation of these causes from extrinsic causes of neck pain will enable the appropriate management protocols to be implemented. Many of these problems can be treated effecti

Factors predicting pain reduction in chronic back and neck pain after multimodal treatment.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether treatment related pain reduction on the short- and long-term is predicted by different baseline variables, and with different accuracy, in patients with chronic low back pain as compared with those with chronic neck pain. DESIGN AND METHODS: A single blinded prospective cohort study based on patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain in the lower back (N = 167) or the neck (N = 136) who completed a 4-week multimodal rehabilitation program. At admission, each patient was evaluated on 17 potential predictors, including pain characteristics and physical, sociodem

Headache, not neck pain, primarily influences the extent of pain in the neck region in symptomatic office workers. Cross-sectional and longitudinal evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Neck pain and headache are common among office workers and lead to a significant personal, societal and economic burden. Whether the area of pain or pain extent (PE) obtained from pain drawings by the office workers themselves can be explained and predicted by clinical outcomes such as pain intensity, frequency or disability is the aim of the current study. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether clinical outcomes related to neck pain and headache can explain the PE in the head and neck region at baseline (cross-sectional analysis), and predict the PE at follow-up (longitudinal analysis) i

Systemic Symptoms as Potential Predictors of Chronic Neck Pain on Initial Examination: Can Systemic Symptoms Act as a Predictor of Neck Pain?

BACKGROUND: Neck pain is a prevalent musculoskeletal disorder that can cause other additional misalignments and other misalignment-induced chronic musculoskeletal diseases. Although numerous risk factors for chronic neck pain have been researched, systemic symptoms have not received the same level of investigation. The aim of this study was to analyze the link between subjective systemic symptoms and neck pain based on initial holistic interviews, with the objective of identifying potential predictive factors for neck pain. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included patients h
