Extramedullary plasmacytoma: rare neoplasm of parotid gland.

A 45-year-old man presented with left-sided facial swelling. Initial excisional biopsy was done somewhere else without prior imaging and it came out to be pleomorphic adenoma; local imaging after biopsy showed mass over the left parotid gland with ipsilateral lymphadenopathy. On examination, there was a well-circumscribed mass with signs of left facial nerve palsy. He underwent left radical parotidectomy with ipsilateral modified radical neck dissection, and per operatively, it came out to be neoplastic lesion. Final histopathology was plasma cell neoplasm of the parotid gland. After surgery,

Recurrent multilocular mandibular giant cell granuloma in neurofibromatosis type 1: Evidence for second hit mutation of NF1 gene in the jaw lesion and treatment with curettage and bone substitute materials.

Giant cell granuloma (GCG) of the jaw is a rare, well-known feature of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), an inborn multisystem disorder. Recently, the development of GCG in NF1 was attributed to second hit mutations in the NF1 gene. The treatment of GCG is pragmatic with a preference for local curettage of lytic osseous areas. This report describes the surgical therapy of an NF1-affected female with multilocular mandibular GCG and hypodontia who additionally suffered from a brain tumour and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Although local recurrence of GCG was noted, augmentation of the curetted cavities

Local resection for ampullary tumors. Is there a place for it?

Two of 14 patients with adenomas were without disease 25 and 43 months after ampullary resection. Two patients with an initial diagnosis of malignant neoplasm had no recurrence at 75 and 40 months; one underwent pancreatoduodenectomy at 8 months because of recurrence. Six of nine patients with initial diagnoses of villous adenoma were without disease at 1, 2, 16, 23, 46, and 51 months; three underwent conversion to pancreatoduodenectomy because of invasive carcinoma. Frozen-section studies revealed adenocarcinoma in two patients with villous adenoma but failed to show invasion in one patient.

Retroperitoneal Hemangiopericytoma in a young woman. Case report and literature review.

UNLABELLED: Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a primary tumor with mesenchymal vascular origin that represents 1% of all vascular neoplasm. HPC develops from the Zimmerman's pericytes around capillaries venules and it is possible to observe it frequently in the extremities, pelvis, retroperitoneum, head, neck and meninges. The only definitive parameter of malignancy is the development of recurrence or distant metastases. This report describes a case of symptomatic retroperitoneal HPC in a young female patient treated by surgical complete removal of the mass, and literature review. Despite the relati

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma of the tonsil and its treatment.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare neoplasm affecting mainly the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. We describe an unusual case of HCCC involving the tonsil and its successful management. A 67-year-old Hispanic woman was discovered to have an asymptomatic right tonsillar mass on routine clinic visit that revealed HCCC on biopsy. A right radical tonsillectomy was performed and pathology confirmed HCCC with positive deep surgical margins. She declined the recommended adjuvant radiation therapy. A follow-up CT of the neck with contrast done a year later revealed a suspicious

Angioleiomyoma of the Foot: Clinical and Functional Outcomes of Surgical Treatment in a Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Angioleiomyoma is a benign soft-tissue tumor that arises from the smooth muscle cells in the tunica media of the blood vessels. Although the most common location for these neoplasms is the uterine wall, they can also originate from lower limbs. Altogether, these neoplasms account for 0.2% of all those located in the foot and ankle region. Signs and symptoms of foot angioleiomyoma can be a localized pain, swelling, and functional impairment. To date, only case reports and case series with small populations have been reported in the literature to describe the clinical picture of thes

Ameloblastoma of the mandible with intracranial metastasis. A case study.

Ameloblastoma is an aggressive locally recurring neoplasm of odontogenic epithelium. We describe a case of a mandibular ameloblastoma with a 17-year history of local recurrences followed by two metachronous intracranial metastases. Central nervous system metastasis without pulmonary involvement is previously unreported in a living patient with ameloblastoma. The behavior of this tumor qualifies it as a malignant ameloblastoma.

Hidradenocarcinomas: a brief review and future directions.

Hidradenocarcinomas are rare, aggressive skin adnexal tumors of sweat gland origin that demonstrate a high potential for local recurrence, metastasis, and poor outcome. These neoplasms can derive from preexisting clear cell hidradenomas but more commonly appear de novo, with the molecular events responsible for the pathogenesis currently unknown. Historically, diagnosis has been difficult because of the few cases, inconsistent nomenclature, variable morphology of cells that compose the neoplasm, and confusion with other visceral metastatic tumors. Presentation is generally benign with an indol

Recurrence after complete resection and selective use of adjuvant therapy for stage I through III Merkel cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare cutaneous neuroendocrine neoplasm whose natural history is poorly understood. Here, the authors describe their experience with a large cohort of patients who were treated at a single institution to describe patterns of recurrence after curative therapy. METHODS: Review of a prospective database was performed. Patient-related, tumor-related, and treatment-related variables were recorded, and the site and timing of initial recurrence were recorded. Factors associated with receipt of adjuvant therapy and recurrence were determined. RESULTS: In t

Goblet cell carcinoid of the appendix.

BACKGROUND: Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the appendix is a rare neoplasm that share histological features of both adenocarcinoma and carcinoid tumor. While its malignant potential remains unclear, GCC's are more aggressive than conventional carcinoid. The clinical presentations of this neoplasm are also varied. This review summarizes the published literature on GCC of the appendix. The focus is on its diagnosis, histopathological aspects, clinical manifestations, and management. METHODS: Published studies in the English language between 1966 to 2004 were identified through Medline keyword s

Penile hybrid verrucous-squamous carcinoma associated with a superficial inguinal lymph node metastasis.

A 62-year-old Japanese man who presented with penile carcinoma is reported. The initial exophytic neoplasm excised from the coronal sulcus and prepuce on the abdominal side of the penis was diagnosed histologically as verrucous carcinoma. Twenty-six months after the primary operation, an epithelial neoplasm recurred within the scar of the primary operation. The neoplasm histologically showed verrucous carcinoma and multiple invasive foci of conventional squamous cell carcinoma in the advancing edge of the tumor, as such representing a hybrid verrucous-squamous carcinoma. A lymph node metastasi

Recurrent craniofacial dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: long-term prognosis after close surgical removal.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a low-grade malignant neoplasm of the dermis that rarely manifests in the craniofacial area. In this retrospective analysis, we investigated the long-term survival of 7 patients with recurrent craniofacial DFSP. This study includes all patients in our department with recurrences of DFSP between 1989 and 2006. All patients were treated by radical surgery with 1-cm free safety margin in every direction and remained in routine long-term follow-up for tumor patients. Two of the 7 patients showed a local recurrence, which was again successfully treated surg

[Extensive basal cell cancer of the scalp - case reports].

Basal-cell canceris a slow growing, rarely metastasizes, locally malignant skin cancer. Patients with this neoplasm usually have excellent prognosis. Potentially, in some cases, a good prognosis cause a delay in therapy. Delay or withdrawal from treatment might lead to higher local extension of tumour with the destruction of the surrounding tissue. In this article we are presenting two patients with extensive basal cell cancer. The first patient underwent plastic surgery for extensive basal-cell carcinoma located in the parietal and temporal area. The second patient was observed due to recurre

Paratesticular fibrous pseudotumor: a report of five cases and literature review.

Paratesticular fibrous pseudotumor is a rare benign tumor that originates from intrascrotal tissue, such as tunica vaginalis, epididymis, or spermatic cord. Five cases of fibrous pseudotumor in our hospital were reviewed retrospectively, and the clinical manifestations were analyzed. Three cases of unilateral nodules, comprising one case located in the tunica vaginalis and two cases located in the epididymis, underwent local excision of the unilateral nodule. Two cases of diffuse incrassation in the tunica vaginalis underwent right radical orchiectomy. Postoperative pathological examination sh

[Therapeutic and histological features of basaloid squamous cell carcinoma].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma s a rare, highly malignant carcinoma variant typically situated in the tongue base, supraglottis and pyriform sinus. It is usually only diagnosed at a very advanced stage due to its tendency towards submucosal growth, deep infiltration and early local and distant metastases. PATIENTS/METHODS: The case described involves a 39-year-old man with the clinical and histopathological findings typical for this neoplasm. RESULTS: In contrast to simple squamous cell carcinomas, the basaloid variant with its very poor prognosis calls for therap

Primary Epithelioid Trophoblastic Tumor of the Vagina: A Case Report and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Primary vaginal epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is an exceptionally rare malignant gestational trophoblastic neoplasm. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman presented with irregular vaginal bleeding and elevated serum β-hCG levels. Examination revealed a vaginal wall mass, and local excision confirmed the diagnosis of ETT. The patient completed seven cycles of chemotherapy and was under regular surveillance thereafter. One year later, local recurrence was detected at the primary tumor site. Definitive surgical intervention was then performed, comprising subradical hystere

Rare granular cell tumor affecting a 13-year-old boy.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare soft-tissue neoplasm, first described in 1926. GCT often manifests as a single, painless nodule that shows a slow enlargement in the cutaneous, subcutaneous, or submucosal tissues. It is commonly reported in adults in the third to sixth decade of life. This case report is of an incidental finding in a young boy, who was radiologically examined for orthodontic treatment purpose and found to have a radiolucent lesion in the mandible. The lesion was later diagnosed as GCT. Central GCT is rare, and the presentation in a child is even rare. Although GCT is report

A Case of Dedifferentiated Laryngeal Liposarcoma With Metachronous Transformation Into a Neoplasm With Myxofibrosarcomatous Elements.

Liposarcomas are rare mesenchymal tissue tumors and are divided into subtypes based on their histopathological characteristics. They are mostly well-differentiated neoplasms with the tendency to recur locally. Lymph node involvement or distant metastases have been reported as extremely rare. Common manifestations are progressive dyspnea, dysphagia, choking, and stridor. Surgical excision of laryngeal liposarcomas is considered the gold standard treatment modality for disease eradication. In persistent or recurrent cases, a total laryngectomy should be performed. There is much controversy regar
