Nevus lipomatosus cutaneus superficialis is a rare idiopathic abnormality characterized by isolated dermal collections of adipose tissue. The lesions usually are either congenital or present by the third decade of life and occur predominantly in the pelvic-girdle area. We saw a case that was unusual because the nodules present arose in the patient's fifth decade of life and were confined to the abdominal wall. Histopathologic examination of the nodules showed mature adipose tissue, perivascular mononuclear cell infiltrates, and numerous mast cells. By electron microscopy, we observed small mat

OBJECTIVE: To present a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis evaluating the oncological safety of autologous fat grafting (AFG).
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: AFG for breast reconstruction presents difficulties during follow-up radiological exams, and the oncological potential of grafted fat is uncertain. Previous studies confirmed that the fatty tissue could be transferred under a good condition suitable would not interfere with mammographic follow-up, although the issue of oncological safety remains.
METHODS: We reviewed the literature published until 01/18/2021. The outcomes

Fat-containing tumors of the salivary glands are uncommon. Their wide histological spectrum varies from pure lipomatous neoplasms similar to their cutaneous and soft tissue counterparts to mixed lipoepithelial lesions specific to the salivary glands. With few exceptions, these uncommon lesions affect mainly the elderly, with a mean age at presentation of ≥ 50 years and show a predilection for males. A few cases occur in childhood; some of them represent congenital lesions. In decreasing order of frequency, ordinary (soft-tissue type) lipoma, oncocytic lipoadenoma, non-oncocytic sialolipoma, an

Cachexia is an irreversible condition that involves a significant loss of body weight, muscle mass, and adipose tissue. It is a complex condition that involves a variety of metabolic, hormonal, and immune-related factors, with the precise mechanisms not yet fully understood. In this review, the prevalence of cachexia in different types of cancer as well as the potential risk factors was evaluated from literature retrieved from databases such as ScienceDirect, PubMed and Scopus. Potential risk factors evaluated here include tumor-related factors such as location, and stage of the cancer, as wel

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of cancer is growing daily. Oral cancer, which is primarily triggered by tobacco use, can have detrimental effects on facial appearance. Despite significant advances in the molecular underpinnings of cancer, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy have become standard cancer treatment methods. These treatments remove the tumor but can significantly alter patient's appearance, which can impact their physical and mental wellbeing. The soft tissue augmentation technique of autologous fat grafting (AFG), commonly referred to as lipofilling, is frequently used in cosmetic

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cancer cachexia results in the death of approximately 2 million people worldwide annually. Despite the impact of this devastating condition, there is limited therapy and no standard of care. Although multiple definitions exist, confusion remains as a true understanding of the biology has not yet been achieved and distinct phases of cachexia have not been examined. Research has mainly focused on weight loss and muscle wasting, but cachexia is increasingly recognized as a multiorgan disorder involving adipose tissue, liver, brain, gut and heart, with systemic inflammation a ce

BACKGROUND: Exerkines are all peptides, metabolites, and nucleic acids released into the bloodstream during and after physical exercise. Exerkines liberated from skeletal muscle (myokines), the heart (cardiokines), liver (hepatokines), white adipose tissue (adipokines), brown adipose tissue (batokines), and neurons (neurokines) may benefit health and wellbeing. Cancer-related cachexia is a highly prevalent disorder characterized by weight loss with specific skeletal muscle and adipose tissue loss. Many studies have sought to provide exercise strategies for managing cachexia, focusing on muscul

This article presents a comprehensive review of the use of quantitative measurements based on breast images to assess fat retention, breast aesthetics, and fat necrosis after autologous fat grafting. Breast volume measured from MRI and 3-dimensional surface images is widely used as a measure of fat retention. Breast aesthetics are assessed from a combination of anthropometric (distance and contour) measurements on breast surface images. Examination of radiologic images (ultrasonography, mammography, and MRI) is utilized to assess fat necrosis. The article discusses implementation guidelines fo

It is well established that breast cancer development and progression depend not only on tumor-cell intrinsic factors but also on its microenvironment and on the host characteristics. There is growing evidence that adipocytes play a role in breast cancer progression. This is supported by: i) epidemiological studies reporting the association of obesity with a higher cancer risk and poor prognosis, ii) recent studies demonstrating the existence of a cross-talk between breast cancer cells and adipocytes locally in the breast that leads to acquisition of an aggressive tumor phenotype, and iii) evi

A uterine leiomyoma with a focus of fatty and cartilaginous differentiation in a 58-year-old female is reported. The leiomyoma was located in the posterior uterine wall and had a maximum diameter of about 15 cm. A yellow hard nodule, about 5 cm in diameter, was found in the periphery of the leiomyoma and histologically was composed of cartilaginous tissue in islands with lipofibromyomatous tissue surrounding them. Generally so-called lipomatous lesions of the uterus include circumscribed or diffuse lipomatosis of a leiomyoma and pure lipoma. Although appearance of cartilaginous tissue in lipom

BACKGROUND: Hibernoma is an uncommon benign adipocytic neoplasm showing differentiation toward brown fat. Although it usually occurs in anatomical sites where residual brown adipose tissue persists, retroperitoneal involvement is particularly uncommon, with fewer than 60 cases reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old man was found to have a retroperitoneal mass incidentally during a routine physical examination. CT and MRI demonstrated a 15-cm homogeneous fat-containing lesion without radiological evidence of local invasion. Complete surgical excision was performed. Histopathological examin

Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is an uncommon form of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) characterized by a proliferation of predominantly megakaryocytes and granulocytes in the bone marrow that, in fully-developed disease, is associated with reactive deposition of fibrous connective tissue, extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH), and splenomegaly. Kidney involvement is rare and clinically presents with proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome, and renal insufficiency. Renal damage can be due to EMH and glomerulopathy. Renal EMH presents three patterns: infiltration of the interstitium with possible renal fail

Myoid hamartoma of the breast is an uncommon benign breast neoplasm. We describe an unusual example of an in-situ and invasive carcinoma arising in a myoid hamartoma. We also describe the unique molecular findings in the myoid hamartoma and review the pertinent literature. In radiology studies, the mammogram showed increased density/attenuation, and the ultrasound revealed a change in the overall echogenicity with hyperechoic and anechoic areas. The stromal compartment contained smooth muscle bundles and adipose tissue on microscopic examination. The stromal cells showed HMGA2 gene rearrangeme

Two cases with the co-existence of micronodular thymoma and lymphoma are presented. The patients are two female patients 54 and 60 years of age who presented with symptoms of chest pain, general malaise, cough, and dyspnea. Diagnostic imaging demonstrated the presence of an anterior mediastinal mass. Initial biopsy was interpreted as an epithelial neoplasm compatible with thymoma. Surgical resection took place demonstrating the presence of micronodular thymoma in both cases. In addition, in both cases the lymphoid proliferation infiltrated surrounding adipose tissue. However, in one case the l

Myofibroblastoma is a rare, benign stromal tumor with a diverse morphologic spectrum. Mammary-type myofibroblastoma (MTMF) is the extra-mammary counterpart of this neoplasm and its occurrence throughout the body has become increasingly recognized. Similar morphologic variations of MTMF have now been described which mirror those seen in the breast. We describe a case of intra-abdominal MTMF composed of short fascicles of eosinophilic spindle cells admixed with mature adipose tissue. The spindle cells stained diffusely positive for CD34, desmin, smooth muscle actin, and h-caldesmon by immunohist

A 74-year-old postmenopausal woman visited our gynecology clinic complaining of a palpable abdominal mass. Physical and radiological evaluation indicated that the mass exhibited features of a left ovarian neoplasm showing heterogeneous enhancement. Surgical resection was performed to confirm this suspicion. During surgery, a mass was observed only in the left ovary with no invasive growth, but adhesions to the surrounding peritoneum were seen. Given the patient's age, large mass size, and accompanying uterine myoma and right ovarian cyst, total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oo

Intussusception in adults is rare and more common in the paediatric population. Clinically, most adult patients have chronic non-specific symptoms due to partial obstruction. In contrast, most paediatric patients present with the classic triad of abdominal pain, vomiting and blood in stool. Adult intussusception is commonly associated with an organic aetiology, most likely a benign or malignant neoplasm as a lead point of intussusception. We describe a case of a 29-year-old woman with subacute presentation due to ileoileal intussusception secondary to a polypoid submucosal angiolipoma. Angioli
