Oculocutaneous oncocytic tumors: clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of 2 cases with literature review.

Oculocutaneous oncocytic tumors (OCOTs) are uncommon neoplasms that have been reported only rarely in the dermatopathology literature and whose immunophenotypic profile has not been well characterized. The clinical, histologic, and immunophenotypic features of 2 cases seen by the authors were assessed, and relevant publications in the literature were reviewed. Both patients with OCOTs were adult women with gradually enlarging, asymptomatic lesions involving the caruncle; they were locally excised. Histologically, the tumors were well-circumscribed nodules comprised of large oxyphilic cells arr

Myxoid Glomus Tumors Showing CD34 Expression: A Series of Eight Cases.

Background: Myxoid glomus tumors (mGTs) are an uncommon histologic pattern of glomus tumors, characterized by prominent myxoid stromal changes that may mimic a wide range of soft tissue neoplasms. Recent reports of unexpected CD34 expression in some cases have further complicated their differential diagnosis. Objectives: This study aimed to characterize the histopathological, immunohistochemical, and clinical features of cutaneous mGTs, with particular emphasis on CD34 expression. Methods: We analyzed 8 histologically confirmed cases of cutaneous mGTs underwent to a comprehensive evaluation of

Peripheral tumor and tumor-like neurogenic lesions.

Neoplasms of neurogenic origin account for about 12% of all benign and 8% of all malignant soft tissue neoplasms. Traumatic neuroma, Morton neuroma, lipomatosis of a nerve, nerve sheath ganglion, perineurioma, benign and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNST) are included in this group of pathologies. Clinical and radiologic evaluation of patients with neurogenic tumors and pseudotumors often reveals distinctive features. In this context, advanced imaging techniques, especially ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance (MR) play an important role in the characterization of these lesions.

PET detection of solitary distant skeletal muscle metastasis of esophageal adenocarcinoma.

A 67-year-old man with progressive dysphagia was recently diagnosed with a gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma. Contrast-enhanced CT scans of the abdomen and pelvis reported a large GE junction tumor without evidence of metastatic disease. FDG positron emission tomography revealed intense tracer accumulation in the soft tissue mass at the GE junction consistent with the primary neoplasm. In addition, PET scan also identified a solitary focus of intense FDG accumulation at the musculotendinous junction of the right gluteus minimus muscle. Subsequent MRI demonstrated mild enhancement and co

Renal angiomyolipoma: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and follow-up study of 46 cases.

We reviewed 46 cases of renal angiomyolipoma covering the period from 1977 to 1997. Eight cases were associated with tuberous sclerosis and one with lymphangiomyomatosis. Histologically, the lesions were most often classic with the three usual components, i.e., mature adipose tissue, thick-walled blood vessels, and smooth muscle. Seven cases were particularly misleading: three cases were entirely adipose mimicking liposarcoma: two cases had an exclusively smooth-muscle component, one mimicking lymphangiomyomatosis and one with epithelioid cells; another case had a monophasic epithelioid pleomo

Imaging of the lesions in the lateral muscle compartment of the forearm, alias mobile wad of Henry: Demographics, radiological anatomy and surgical relevance.

INTRODUCTION: Mobile wad of Henry (MOH) is a preferred surgical term used to describe the lateral compartment muscles of the forearm consisting of brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis. The lesions in this compartment are uncommon. In this paper, we describe the largest series of the MOH lesions including their demographics, imaging appearances and importance of surgical anatomy whilst managing MOH lesions via radiological or surgical interventions. METHODS: A retrospective search of oncology database for lesions in MOH at our tertiary orthopaedic oncology institute was p

Data science meets FTIR Imaging: a promising probe to improve the diagnosis of human uterine muscle lesions.

Uterine smooth muscle tumors include a broad range of neoplasms, from benign leiomyomas (LMs) to malignant leiomyosarcomas (LMS), as well as intermediate forms classified as Smooth Muscle Tumors of Uncertain Malignant Potential (STUMP). An accurate diagnosis of these tumor types is essential for their appropriate clinical management; however, it remains challenging due to possible overlapping of histological features. In this study, a multidisciplinary approach combining Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging (FTIRI) spectroscopy, a label-free and non-destructive analytical technique, with histolo

[Vascular tumors of the skin and soft tissue. Overview of newly characterized entities and variants].

This review summarizes vascular tumours of skin and soft tissues that have been characterised in recent years. Although most of them are very rare, knowledge about their reproducible clinicopathological features is important to avoid diagnostic pitfalls. These lesions include: bacillary angiomatosis, a vasoproliferative, pseudoneoplastic infection of immunocompromised patients caused by Rochalimaea henselae; tufted angioma, a variant of lobular capillary haemangioma characterised by a "cannon-ball" distribution of multiple lobules composed of packed capillaries and pericytes; microvenular haem

Surgical Resection and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction of a Rapidly Progressive Desmoid Tumor: A Case Report.

Desmoid tumors (DTs) are rare, locally invasive soft tissue neoplasms characterized by fibroblastic proliferation and a lack of metastatic potential. Despite their histologically benign nature, their infiltrative behavior and unpredictable progression present significant therapeutic challenges, particularly when located in the abdominal wall, where resection and reconstruction may be necessary. We present the case of a 37-year-old woman with a rapidly enlarging, painful mass in the right rectus abdominis muscle. Imaging and biopsy confirmed desmoid-type fibromatosis. After a period of surveill

Cardiac embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in a domestic shorthair cat.

Rhabdomyosarcomas (RBMs) are rare neoplasms arising from striated muscle tissues in domestic animals and are exceptionally uncommon, affecting the heart of domestic cats. A case of cardiac embryonal RBM was detected in a two-year-old female domestic shorthair cat. The cat exhibited dyspnea, anorexia, pericardial and pleural effusions, ultimately succumbing to severe respiratory arrest. Gross post-mortem examination revealed a firm yellow-tan mass measuring 2.5 × 1.5 cm protruding from the right atrium, along with metastatic nodules of various sizes dispersed throughout the liver, spleen, and l

Malignant Cutaneous Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumour with Rhabdomyosarcomatous Differentiation (Triton Tumour) in a Domestic Cat.

Divergent differentiation is encountered frequently within human malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (MPNSTs). The new component is often a rhabdomyosarcoma, but in animals this specific form of divergent differentiation within MPNSTs has only been reported once (in a dog). Incisional wedge biopsy of a locally extensive, ventral abdominal wall mass, which extended from the dermis to the subcutis, from a 12-year-old female domestic shorthaired cat, was performed. The tissue was examined with routine haematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemical methods. A malignant neoplasm with

Primary pleural leiomyosarcoma with rapid progression and fatal outcome: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcomas are neoplasms of smooth muscles that most commonly arise from the uterus, gastrointestinal tract, or soft tissue. Primary pleural leiomyosarcoma is extremely rare. To the best of our knowledge, only nine cases have been published to date. Because of the rarity of pleural leiomyosarcoma and its similarity (clinical and histological) to other pleural neoplasms, particularly sarcomatous mesothelioma, diagnosis is often difficult. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old North African man was admitted with complaints of dyspnea and chest pain to our hospital. Chest computed

[Clinical aspects, diagnosis and therapy of space-occupying tumors of the orbit].

In the presence of obvious, diffuse tissue proliferation in the retrobulbar space coupled with pain, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate and a good response to corticosteroid administration, it is safe to assume, in consultation with an ophthalmologist and without doing a biopsy, that the lesion is a pseudotumour. For all other proliferative processes in the orbit and around the medial and inferior rectus muscles histological verification is indicated. The surgical approach is dictated by the site of the tumour in relation to the optic bulb and nerve. Computer tomography does not provide

Minor salivary gland neoplasm in children.

In this article, we present a review of the literature, and we focus on 2 particular cases of cancer of the salivary glands accessory in pediatric patients The accessory parotid is the site of congenital and acquired lesions. In adults, the acquired lesions are often neoplastic and are usually similar to those seen in the main parotid gland. The disorders in children are less well defined, as only a few cases have been reported. The accessory parotid gland, or accessory parotid, is a nodule of normal salivary tissue separated from the main parotid gland, located on the masseter muscle, to which

Laryngeal rhabdomyoma in a dog.

A 3-year-old, female spayed Australian Shepherd dog was presented to Veterinary Healthcare Associates in Winter Haven, FL with a history of respiratory stridor, difficulty swallowing, and a change in bark for approximately 3 months. Radiographs revealed a soft tissue mass caudal to the epiglottis. Oral and computerized tomographic (CT) examinations were performed under general anesthesia and revealed a small firm mass in the caudal larynx on the right side. Cytologic evaluation of a fine-needle aspirate of the mass revealed cells consistent with a rhabdomyoma, oncocytoma, or granular cell tumo
