Impact of post-traumatic stress disorder on clinical outcomes following lumbar interbody spinal fusion.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and adverse clinical events following lumbar interbody fusion surgery. METHODS: A multi-institutional electronic medical record database was queried for patients undergoing lumbar interbody fusion surgery. The primary cohort of interest consisted of adult patients with a pre-operative diagnosis of PTSD. Propensity score matching was performed using demographics and comorbidities to generate matched controls. Patients with spine neoplasms, trauma, osteomyelitis, and inflammato

Paraplegia Caused by Spontaneous Spinal Hemorrhage in a Patient Undergoing Rivaroxaban Therapy.

BACKGROUND Spinal hematomas can be post-traumatic, iatrogenic, or spontaneous. A spontaneous spinal hematoma is a rare finding, but one with very serious clinical implications. There are some risk factors linked to its occurrence, e.g. arteriovenous malformations, lumbar puncture, coagulopathy, neoplasms, or therapeutic anticoagulation. At present, only a few cases of spontaneous spinal hematoma (SSH) associated with new oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have been described, three of which were linked with rivaroxaban. CASE REPORT We report the case of an 82-year-old Caucasian woman with persistent

Profiles of risk and protective factors of women with breast cancer after 18 months: A latent profile analysis.

The present study aimed to identify profiles of women diagnosed with breast cancer 18 months postdiagnosis based on a combination of risk and protective factors. Additionally, the study aimed to examine various potential early predictors at 3 and 6 months postdiagnosis to determine their association with the identified profiles at 18 months postdiagnosis. The sample of the study consisted of 499 women with breast cancer from four oncology centers located in Finland, Portugal, Italy, and Israel. Women completed self-report questionnaires at three time points postdiagnosis: 3, 6, and 18 months.

Posttraumatic stress disorder and breast cancer: Risk factors and the role of inflammation and endocrine function.

A breast cancer diagnosis can be a life-changing and stressful experience that can lead to chronic mental health conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Greater than one-third of patients initially diagnosed with PTSD after a diagnosis of breast cancer continue to have persistent or worsening PTSD symptoms after 4 years. An emerging body of literature has indicated several key environmental and biological risk factors for PTSD among survivors of breast cancer. Well-recognized risk factors include having a history of childhood trauma, being nonwhite, obesity, younger age at the

Protocol for the psychotherapeutic group intervention for facilitating posttraumatic growth in nonmetastatic breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer can be perceived as a traumatic event with disturbing effects on psychological domains such as depression, anxiety, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. In contrast, growing evidence has shown that posttraumatic growth can occur as a result of coping with breast cancer. Challenging the assumptive world, deliberate rumination, and emotional disclosure are recognized as strong predictors of posttraumatic growth. Group interventions may also increase social support, distress disclosure, and posttraumatic growth. The aim of this study is to evaluate how group-based interven

Long-term positive and negative psychological late effects for parents of childhood cancer survivors: a systematic review.

Increasing survival rates in childhood cancer have yielded a growing population of parents of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). This systematic review compiles the literature on positive and negative long-term psychological late effects for parents of CCSs, reported at least five years after the child's diagnosis and/or two years after the end of the child's treatment. Systematic searches were made in the databases CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and PubMed. Fifteen studies, published between 1988 and 2010, from 12 projects were included. Thirteen studies used quantitative methodology, one quantita

[Post-traumatic alpha-and mu-wave-foci (author's transl)].

28 patients with an activated focus (8-12 c/s focus) in the central region were examined for mu-wave-activity utilizing visual and calculation of the coherence function. Over 60% (18 patients) of these foci were mu-wave-foci. This type of mu-waves was decidedly less sensitive to change in vigilance than physiological mu-waves. Seven foci were alpha-foci and three foci could be classified as neither alpha- nor mu-wave-foci since they did not react to sensory and sensomotoric stimuli. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the pathological mu-waves and the pathological alpha-waves were very simil

Post-traumatic stress disorder, stress burden, and quality of life among caregivers of children with cancer in Egypt.

Caregivers of children with cancer frequently endure considerable psychological distress. The challenging nature of caregiving, combined with the emotional burden of witnessing a child's illness and treatment, can impact the quality of life and lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in these caregivers. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of PTSD among caregivers of pediatric cancer patients and to identify the risk factors contributing to its development. Additionally, it examined the stress burden on caregivers and its impact on their quality of life.

Styles of Delivering News About a Child's Cancer and Parents' PTSD Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Receiving a child's cancer diagnosis is a highly traumatic experience for parents, often leading to significant psychological distress, including symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The way healthcare professionals deliver this news can affect the severity of parents' reactions. While some research examines communication style's impact on patients, few studies focus on its effects on parents. AIMS: This study explores the relationship between the communication style used by oncologists when delivering a child's cancer diagnosis and the subsequent levels of PTSD symp

[Contribution of nuclear medicine to the diagnosis of silent adrenal masses].

The role of adrenal scintigraphy in the noninvasive characterization of silent adrenal masses was investigated in 40 patients. The mass had been detected by US or CT performed in the evaluation of non-malignant extra-adrenal diseases (25 cases) or during staging or follow-up of a malignant extra-adrenal neoplasm (15 cases). In all cases radio-cholesterol scintigraphy (74 MBq i.v. of 131I-6 beta-iodomethylnorcholesterol in 19 cases; 11 MBq i.v. of 75Se-6 beta-selenomethylnorcholesterol in 21 cases) was performed; in 7 cases also 131I-MIBG scan (18.5-37 MBq i.v.) was carried out. C2 nerve root sectioning in C1-C2 arthrodesis: a single-surgeon series of 31 patients.

PURPOSE: C1-C2 instability can result from trauma, degenerative changes, neoplasms, or congenital abnormalities. Atlantoaxial stabilization is a complex surgical procedure due to the unique anatomy of C1 and C2 and the wide range of motion of this segment. This study evaluates the safety and utility of C2 nerve root sectioning to facilitate visualization of the C1 screw entry point, reducing the risk of intraoperative neurological and vascular injury. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a single-surgeon (CM) series of 31 patients undergoing C1-C2 arthrodesis between 2009 and 2025, with intra

Associations of Cancer-Related Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Gender With Health Behaviors Among Caregivers of Adult Patients With Colorectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: The life-threatening nature of cancer can precipitate posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in family caregivers. PTSS can lead to unhealthy coping and maladaptive health behaviors. AIMS: We explored the extent to which PTSS are associated with health behaviors of caregivers and the moderating role of gender. METHODS: Spousal caregivers (N = 144) of patients who were newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer were enrolled. The sample was comprised of mostly Hispanic, middle-aged, and female caregivers. Four types of cancer-related PTSS (intrusions, avoidance, negative alterations in

Bridging the gap: a systematic cultural adaptation of the Surviving Cancer Competently Intervention Program (SCCIP) for Chinese families using the ADAPT-ITT framework.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial interventions are essential for families of children with cancer. The Surviving Cancer Competently Intervention Program (SCCIP), an evidence-based intervention (EBI) has effectively improved the negative emotions of American children and their families. Due to the national and cultural differences, it is not suitable to apply it to China directly. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to culturally adapt the SCCIP for Chinese families of children with cancer and to pilot test it in improving Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) and anxiety. METHODS: The adaptation process fo

Development and validation of a risk prediction model for post-traumatic stress disorder among Chinese breast cancer survivors.

This study thoroughly assesses the factors affecting the posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in patients with breast cancers from a multidimensional perspective according to the theory of unpleasant symptoms (TOUS). Additionally, it develops a nomogram prediction model tailored for this group. A cross-section analysis involving seven major hospitals in northern Anhui Province was performed to collect data from 1135 breast cancer survivors. The self-reported Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C) was applied to evaluate PTSD. Multiple logistic regression analysis was
