Acantholysis is a microscopic finding describing the breakdown of desmosomes of keratinocytes and the formation of intraepithelial clefts after the loss of cohesion of keratinocytes. Cytologic smears of a Warthin's tumor (WT) typically consist of sheets of oncocytic (oxyphilic) cells and scattered lymphocytes. Reparative foci within this neoplasm can occur, which may give rise to exfoliated, malignant-appearing, squamous-like cells. A false-positive diagnosis of squamous carcinoma can occur when these atypical cells dominate the cytologic aspirate. Histochemical and immunoperoxidase stains may aid in diagnosing an atypical WT when the usual cytologic features are absent.

Mature cystic teratoma is the most common type of ovarian germ cell neoplasm, but occasionally, it can undergo malignant transformations, especially in postmenopausal women. A 74-year-old transgender female presented with urinary difficulty and a painful lesion at her neo-vagina, 47 years after undergoing gender-affirming vaginoplasty. Initial biopsy reported Low-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion (LGSIL), while MRI revealed no inguinal or pelvic lymphadenopathy. Three black women were found to have granular-cell tumors on the vulva; in one, there were several additionally in other cutaneous sites. Although this benign neoplasm is uncommon on the vulva, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of nodular lesions on the vulva. Granular-cell tumors in multiplicity occur frequently and are not a sign of metastatic disease. This lesion has predilection for blacks. Pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia occurs typically in overlying squamous epithelium and may be misinterpreted as squamous-cell carcinoma.

The presence of amylase in normal and neoplastic salivary gland tissue was investigated by immunoperoxidase techniques. Apart from normal and inflamed parotid glands, different kinds of tumours were studied with regard to amylase: acinic cell tumours, adenocarcinomas, adenoidcystic carcinomas, salivary duct carcinomas, mucoepidermoid tumours and squamous cell carcinomas. Amylase could be seen in acinic cell tumours, but not in other neoplasms. The results were discussed with respect to the diagnostic implications.
