Histologic Investigation of the Female Vesicourethral Junction and Adjacent Tissues for Nerve-sparing Radical Cystectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the structures around the vesicourethral junction and to improve functional outcomes after nerve-sparing radical cystectomy with orthotopic urinary diversion for female patients, we histologically elucidated the fibromuscular construction and nerve distribution around the vesicourethral junction. METHODS: Pelvic specimens containing all the pelvic viscera were obtained from 33 donated female cadavers. Macroslices that included the urethra, the anterior wall of the vagina, and the inferomedial edge of the levator ani muscle were made and performed elastica Masson and i

Structural and Functional Changes in the Coupling of Fascial Tissue, Skeletal Muscle, and Nerves During Aging.

Aging is a one-way process associated with profound structural and functional changes in the organism. Indeed, the neuromuscular system undergoes a wide remodeling, which involves muscles, fascia, and the central and peripheral nervous systems. As a result, intrinsic features of tissues, as well as their functional and structural coupling, are affected and a decline in overall physical performance occurs. Evidence from the scientific literature demonstrates that senescence is associated with increased stiffness and reduced elasticity of fascia, as well as loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength

Interaction of perivascular adipose tissue and sympathetic nerves in arteries from normotensive and hypertensive rats.

The inhibitory action of perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) in modulation of arterial contraction has been recently recognized and contrasted with the prohypertensive effect of obesity in humans. In this study we demonstrated that PVAT might have opposing effect on sympatho-adrenergic contractions in different rat conduit arteries. In superior mesenteric artery isolated from normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY), PVAT exhibited inhibitory influence on the contractions to exogenous noradrenaline as well as to endogenous noradrenaline released from arterial sympathetic nerves during transmural el

Copper and zinc levels in peripheral nerve tissues of rats with experimental carbon-disulphide neuropathy.

Lukáš, E., Kotas, P., and Obrusník, I., (1974).British Journal of Industrial Medicine,31, 288-291. Copper and zinc levels in peripheral nerve tissues of rats with experimental carbon-disulphide neuropathy. By means of neutron activation analysis the levels of zinc and copper in peripheral nerve tissue of two groups of rats with carbon-disulphide neuropathy were estimated. The neuropathy (diagnosed electromyographically) was evoked by inhalation of 3·6 mg CS2/litre of air (variant 1) or 2·4 mg CS2/litre of air (variant 2). Stationary Zn levels were found in control and exposed animals in both o

Herpes simplex virus-host cell relationships in organized cultures of mammalian nerve tissues.

Studies on the replication of herpes simplex virus in organized cultures of rat central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) tissue demonstrated synthesis of intra- and extracellular virus, as determined by plaque assay on HEp-2 cells. Newly synthesized intracellular virus appeared 12 to 14 hr after inoculation of CNS, followed 10 hr later by the appearance of extracellular virus. In PNS cultures, where higher inputs of virus were introduced, intracellular virus appeared 6 to 8 hr after inoculation, followed by extracellular virus 12 hr later. Polykaryocyte formation was ob

Functional and Oncologic Outcomes Following Perinatal Tissue Allograft Placement During Nerve-Sparing Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy.

Despite advances in nerve-sparing techniques, recovery of erectile function and urinary continence after robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) often remains delayed. Emerging research has shown that perinatal tissue allografts can serve as an effective covering of the cavernous nerves during nerve-sparing RARP. The primary objective of this case series is to evaluate the feasibility and safety of placement of perinatal tissue allograft(s) as a covering and protective barrier around the cavernosal nerves during nerve-sparing RARP. Patients with biopsy-proven localized prostate cancer tr

A case of myositis associated with mixed connective tissue disease mimicking bilateral posterior interosseous nerve palsy.

Overlap myositis (OM) is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy characterized by proximal muscle weakness. However, atypical patterns of muscle involvement may also occur. We present a challenging case of OM mimicking bilateral posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) palsy. The patient presented with a gradual onset of bilateral finger drop over two years. Despite initial clinical suspicion of PIN palsy, electromyography revealed myopathic features. Laboratory assessments showed anti-ribonucleoprotein antibody positivity, with subsequent muscle biopsies supporting OM associated with mixed connective t

Association of Uterine Tissue Innervation and Peripheral Nerve Density with Adenomyosis Related Pain. A Systematic Review.

Adenomyosis is associated with dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain; however, the triggering mechanisms of painful stimuli and the role of uterine nerve fibers in the manifestation of pain remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was to systematically review the role of uterine nerve fibers' presence and density in the occurrence of pain in patients with adenomyosis. An electronic search was performed using the Embase, PubMed/Medline, and Cochrane databases. We included all studies from inception to November 2023. A total of ten studies that compared uterine biopsies samples of wo

Tissue-resident M2 macrophages directly contact primary sensory neurons in the sensory ganglia after nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: Macrophages in the peripheral nervous system are key players in the repair of nerve tissue and the development of neuropathic pain due to peripheral nerve injury. However, there is a lack of information on the origin and morphological features of macrophages in sensory ganglia after peripheral nerve injury, unlike those in the brain and spinal cord. We analyzed the origin and morphological features of sensory ganglionic macrophages after nerve ligation or transection using wild-type mice and mice with bone-marrow cell transplants. METHODS: After protecting the head of C57BL/6J mic

Peripheral nerve reconstruction with collagen tubes filled with denatured autologous muscle tissue in the rat model.

Conventional nerve conduits lack cellular and extracellular guidance structures critical for bridging larger defects. In this study, an exogenous matrix for axonal regeneration was provided by pretreated muscle tissue. In 24 rats, 14-mm sciatic nerve segments were resected and surgically reconstructed using one of the following methods: autograft (AG); bovine type I collagen conduit; (MDM) collagen tube filled with modified denatured autologous muscle tissue. For 8 weeks, functional regeneration was evaluated by footprint and video gait analysis. Evaluation was complemented by electrophysiolog

[Identification of high-risk patients after minor craniocerebral trauma. Measurement of nerve tissue protein S 100].

The indication for an initial cranial computed tomography (CCT) in minor head trauma (MHT) patients remains the subject of discussion. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a newly developed, rapid test system (ELECSYS S100, Roche Diagnostics) might allow a diagnostically valid, reproducible measurement of S 100 in MHT patients. Blood samples were drawn from 75 MHT patients, a CCT scan was performed, and those with a post-traumatic intracranial lesion counted as CCT+. Results were compared to a healthy control group (n=17). Of the 75 patients included in the study, 14 were stratifie

Up-regulation of ORL-1 receptors in spinal tissue of allodynic rats after sciatic nerve injury.

Nociceptin, acting through the opioid receptor-like 1 (ORL1) receptor, produces anti-nociception in several models of neuropathy. We examined the involvement of the ORL1 receptor system in the allodynia developed after sciatic nerve ligation. Allodynic rats were selected by the von Frey hair and treated intrathecally with nociceptin or morphine. The peptide induced dose-dependent anti-allodynic activities, while morphine was effective at the higher dose only. By the semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay, the two described ORL1 receptor isoforms were u

Peripheral nerve entrapment, occupation-related syndromes, sports injuries, bursitis, and soft-tissue problems of the shoulder.

In this review, three areas are highlighted: knee injuries due to athletic events, carpal tunnel syndrome, and shoulder problems, especially glenoid labral tears. In patients with chronic anterior cruciate ligament insufficiency, an increasing incidence of meniscal tears was seen. A Finnish study showed that athletes from all types of competitive sports are at a slightly increased risk of requiring hospital care because of osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, or ankle. A number of studies on the electrodiagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome were published, and some of these are reviewed. The shoulder

Cytogenetic analysis of soft tissue sarcomas. Recurrent chromosome abnormalities in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST).

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) are known to develop in patients with neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), thus providing an excellent model for the study of multistep carcinogenesis in genetically predisposed individuals. To determine the sites of gene(s) involved in such a process, we have performed cytogenetic analysis on 10 tumors. The patients were five males and five females ranging in age from 15 to 77 years. Nine patients had NF1. Karyotypic analysis of these tumors exhibited complex clonal abnormalities of several chromosomes. Recurrent abnormalities (numerical as well as struc

Total renal nerve activity is enhanced during renal venous congestion to maintain renal medullary tissue oxygenation.

Renal venous congestion is one of the most important hemodynamic factors driving renal dysfunction in patients with heart failure. However, the mechanisms whereby increases in renal venous pressure (RVP) impair renal function are not well understood. An anesthetized ovine model was used to test the hypothesis that elevations in RVP increase renal nerve activity and mediate impairments in renal hemodynamics and renal tissue oxygenation. The protocol was carried out in two groups: renal nerve intact (n = 8) and right unilateral renal denervated (n = 7) animals. During experimentally induced rena
