Primary paratesticular ganglioneuroma: a rare case in an adult.

Ganglioneuroma is a benign tumor, affecting the central nervous system, commonly seen in children and young adults. Non-cranial ganglioneuromas are seen predominantly in the posterior mediastinum and retroperitoneum. Paratesticular neoplasms are extremely rare and are susceptible to clinical misinterpretation as malignancy. Tumors of nerve origin are a rarity in the paratesticular region, with a few cases of schwannoma and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor being reviewed in the literature. A rare case of ganglioneuroma involving the paratesticular region in an adult is presented.

[Neurofibromatosis type 1 - description of clinical features and molecular mechanism of the disease].

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) called also von Recklinghausen's disease is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder with a  complex clinical course. Clinical signs and symptoms concern mainly skin (with pigmentation abnormalities- café au lait macules, axillary/groin freckling and neurofibromas) and central nervous system (cognitive impairment, epilepsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and gliomas). However, pathologic changes may also affect other organs and systems, including skeletal system (scoliosis, hypostature, osteoporosis, pseudoarthrosis and sphenoid wing dysplasia) or cardiov

Nonneoplastic causes of death in neurofibromatosis 1: A cohort study with long-term follow-up.

PURPOSE: Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is associated with reduced life expectancy due to malignancies; however, the risk of nonneoplastic causes of death is less well characterized. METHODS: A total of 1622 persons with NF1, identified through either the Danish National Patient Registry or a clinical database, and 15,856 matched comparators born between 1951 to 2002 were followed from either age 20 or NF1 diagnosis. Death causes were from the Danish Cause of Death Register. Cumulative risks of different causes of death were compared between persons with and without NF1, and years of life lost (YL

Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm (BPDCN): 2025 Update on Diagnosis, Pathophysiology, Risk Assessment, and Management.

OVERVIEW: Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare, aggressive hematologic neoplasm that involves multiple organs, including the skin, bone marrow and blood, lymph nodes, and central nervous system. Violaceous tumors or plaques appearing in sun-exposed areas are characteristic and present in most patients. The disease typically affects adult men aged 60-70 years, although children and younger adults may also be affected. DIAGNOSIS: Diagnosis is based on biopsy of an involved site and is typically based on the identification of blastoid cells displaying the classical immu

Diffuse Ganglioneuromatosis of the Colon in a Patient with Neurofibromatosis 1.

Ganglioneuromas are rare, benign neurogenic tumors characterized by a proliferation of ganglion cells, nerve fibers, and support cells of the nervous system. They have been classified into three groups: solitary, polyposis, and diffuse. The diffuse type has several syndromic associations including multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2B and, less commonly, neurofibromatosis type 1. We report a case of diffuse ganglioneuromatosis in the colon of a 49-yearold male with a history of neurofibromatosis type 1. Gastrointestinal neoplasms associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 are reviewed.

Intraoperative uses of ultrasound in the pediatric neurosurgical patient.

Ultrasound imaging has become a common method for intraoperative evaluation of the central nervous system. Real-time monitoring aids in guidance for aspiration of fluid collections and placement of catheters as well as the localization and evaluation of masses, and confirmation of their complete removal. Color Doppler is useful in the evaluation of blood flow in arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, and neoplasms. Consultation among the ultrasound staff, neuroradiologists, and neurosurgeons before the operative procedure maximizes the usefulness of ultrasound, thus aiding in the success of s

Choroid plexus carcinoma. Report of a case with cytopathologic differential diagnosis.

The cytopathologic features of choroid plexus carcinoma in the cerebrospinal fluid of a 13-month-old male infant were reviewed and compared with those of other small-cell malignant neoplasms of childhood and young adulthood involving the central nervous system. The cytologic features of the choroid plexus carcinoma (tight spatial clusters and isolated anaplastic cells with striking nuclear lobulation) were distinct from those of lymphoma, leukemia, neuroblastoma, ependymoma and pineal germinoma. However, the cells had a striking resemblance to those of anaplastic ependymoma and metastatic aden

Atypical and polymorphic angioblastic tumors of the central nervous system.

Five central nervous system (CNS) polymorphic angioblastic tumors have been studied. Four were located in the posterior fossa and one involved the temporal lobe. In reviewing the literature, the authors point out the rarity of the supratentorial locations and of malignant hemangioblastomas. The clinical and anatomopathological peculiarities are discussed, as is the uncertain classification of two cases. The discrepancy between histology and outcome is focused upon in the other three cases. Finally, the diagnostic, prognostic, and nosographic difficulties posed by CNS angioblastic neoplasms are

Cutaneous paraganglioma of the vertex in a child.

Paraganglioma is a neuroendocrine neoplasm that may develop at various body sites, including the head, neck, thorax, and abdomen. Approximately 85% of paragangliomas develop on the abdomen, 12% develop on the chest, and only 3% develop on the head and neck. These tumors are found in locations that parallel the sympathetic chain ganglion in the thoracolumbar regions and parasympathetic nervous system in craniosacral regions, and all head and neck paragangliomas arise from the parasympathetic nervous system. Although the skin has a rich neural network, it is devoid of ganglia. There has been onl

Cerebral pleomorphic liposarcoma: Clinicopathologic findings.

Pleomorphic liposarcoma is the rarest subtype of liposarcoma. Involvement of the central nervous system by pleomorphic liposarcoma is exceptional. We present a 62-year-old woman with an intraparenchymal mass involving the left frontoparietal lobes. Histologic examination demonstrated a mesenchymal neoplasm with a dense reticulin network and pleomorphic lipoblasts. Immunohistochemical stain for adipophilin highlighted intracytoplasmic vacuoles. MDM2 immunostain was negative. A diagnosis of pleomorphic liposarcoma was made. There was no evidence of an extracranial primary neoplasm by imaging or

Cerebellar liponeurocytoma.

Cerebellar liponeurocytoma is a rare neoplasm with distinctive morphologic features. It typically involves the cerebellar hemispheres of middle-aged to older adults. The tumor is composed of a uniform population of neurocytic cells possessing round to oval nuclei and pale to clear cytoplasm. A variable degree of lipidization of the tumor cells is present, lending a resemblance to mature adipose tissue. Immunohistochemistry serves to confirm the neurocytic differentiation of the tumor cells. In the 2007 revision of the World Health Organization classification of central nervous system tumors, c

A 31-year-old male with a plasmacytoid dendritic blast cell neoplasm.

Plasmacytoid blast dendritic cell neoplasm is a rare subtype of acute leukaemia that represents less than 1% of haematologic neoplasms. It is characterised by skin involvement and leukaemic dissemination in the rest of the body. The immunophenotype is represented by the expression of CD4, CD56 and CD123. Due to its low incidence, there is no standardised treatment. For most authors, acute lymphoblastic leukaemia) regimens with or without consolidation with allogeneic transplantation seem to be the most appropriate. We present the case of a 31-year-old male with a history of von Willebrand's di

Intravascular central nervous system T-cell lymphoma in a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) with cerebral infarction.

Lymphoid and haematopoietic neoplasms are rare in cetaceans. This report describes intravascular lymphoma in an adult common dolphin that presented with neurological signs prior to stranding. Intravascular lymphoma is a rare neoplasm previously recorded in humans, dogs, a cat and a horse. The condition is characterized by intravascular neoplastic lymphocytic proliferation, the sequelae of which are dependent on the organ affected. Key pathological findings in this case included multifocal cerebrocortical malacia secondary to vascular occlusion associated with intravascular neoplastic lymphocyt

Leptomeningeal lymphoma in a child with acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Primary non-Hodgkin lymphoma of the central nervous system is rare in pediatric AIDS patients. We report a seven-year-old HIV-infected boy, in stage C3 of the disease, who developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the central nervous system with a leptomeningeal location. The patient started with signs and symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, impaired consciousness and then became blind. The diagnosis was based on brain biopsy, immunophenotypic studies of B cells, and Epstein-Barr virus serology of the cerebrospinal fluid. The boy was treated with intrathecal and systemic chemotherapy. Fifteen

Intramedullary spinal cord tumors in neurofibromatosis.

Neurofibromatosis (NF) describes the most commonly inherited disorders affecting the nervous system. These autosomal dominant, neurocutaneous syndromes are associated with multiple tumors of the nervous system, including neurofibromas, schwannomas, meningiomas, and intracranial gliomas. Spinal cord involvement in NF is typically from extramedullary growth of spinal nerve root tumors. Intramedullary spinal cord tumors in NF have been reported as scattered, single cases in literature. However, this association has not been clearly defined as have other nervous system neoplasms that are typically

Malignant Ependymoblastoma Mimicking a Benign Pilocytic Astrocytoma.

Ependymoblastoma is an uncommon, exceedingly malignant brain neoplasm that adversely influences children's quality of life. Ependymoblastoma represents a subtype of primitive neuroectodermal tumors, categorized as grade IV, according to the 2007 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of central nervous system tumors. Ependymoblastomas are often located in the supratentorial zone and often associated with the ventricular system. Histopathological sections of the tumor revealed uniform, primitive, small blue cells, with multi-layered rosettes, accompanied by abundant mitoses. The clinica

Brainstem astroblastoma with MN1 translocation.

Astroblastoma is a rare glial neoplasm that occurs mostly in the cerebral hemisphere of children, adolescents and young adults. Although astroblastic perivascular pseudorosettes are unique histopathology of this neoplasm, diagnosis is usually challenging. Recently, it was discovered that the meningioma 1 gene (MN1)-altered pediatric central nervous system high-grade neuroepithelial tumors are actually astroblastomas. This case report presents a rare brainstem astroblastoma, with an unusual immunoprofile: negative for glial fibrillary acidic protein and oligodendrocyte transcription factor 2, b

A carcinoid tumor of the middle ear masquerading as a glomus tympanicum presenting with temporal lobe hemorrhage in a 70-year-old woman: Case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas in the central nervous system account for 0.6% of all head and neck neoplasms, with glomus tympanicum being the most common middle ear tumor. Carcinoid tumors are neuroendocrine tumors, representing less than 1% of neuroendocrine neoplasms in the middle ear. Misdiagnoses have been reported in the literature regarding glomus and carcinoid tumors, however, none have been in the central nervous system or middle ear. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 70-year-old female with a history of left temporal lobe tumor underwent unsuccessful resection due to intraoperative bleeding at an out
