Divergent Egg-Rejection Strategies Between Laying and Incubation Periods in the Green-Backed Tit (Parus monticolus).

Egg recognition and rejection constitute essential host defenses against brood parasitism, with rejection decisions reflecting evolutionary adaptations shaped by cost-benefit trade-offs. Although long-term studies have established correlations between egg rejection behavior and parasitism risk, it remains unclear whether hosts can dynamically adjust their defenses in response to stage-specific parasitic threats across different breeding periods. We investigated temporal variation in egg recognition and rejection latency in the green-backed tit (Parus monticolus), analyzing both seasonal patter

Effects of early life adversity on acute metabolic outcomes during neonatal development.

Early life adversity has lasting effects on neuroendocrine function and increases risk for psychopathology and metabolic disease. Stress and metabolism are closely intertwined, with critical periods for early life stress overlapping those for metabolic programming. Early life adversity models in rodents have the potential to affect development through multiple pathways, including nutrition, parental behavior, and direct physical stress. In the current study, we investigate how a limited bedding and nesting material (LBN) postnatal environment affects maternal behavior, milk composition, and ac

The Nucleus Accumbens CRH-CRHR1 System Mediates Early-Life Stress-Induced Sleep Disturbance and Dendritic Atrophy in the Adult Mouse.

Adverse experiences in early life have long-lasting negative impacts on behavior and the brain in adulthood, one of which is sleep disturbance. As the corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH)-corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor 1 (CRHR1) system and nucleus accumbens (NAc) play important roles in both stress responses and sleep-wake regulation, in this study we investigated whether the NAc CRH-CRHR1 system mediates early-life stress-induced abnormalities in sleep-wake behavior in adult mice. Using the limited nesting and bedding material paradigm from postnatal days 2 to 9, we found that earl

Ether Lipid Deficiency in Mice Produces a Complex Behavioral Phenotype Mimicking Aspects of Human Psychiatric Disorders.

Ether lipids form a specialized subgroup of phospholipids that requires peroxisomes to be synthesized. We have previously detected that deficiency in these lipids leads to a severe disturbance of neurotransmitter homeostasis and release as well as behavioral abnormalities, such as hyperactivity, in a mouse model. Here, we focused on a more detailed examination of the behavioral phenotype of ether lipid-deficient mice (Gnpat KO) and describe a set of features related to human psychiatric disorders. Gnpat KO mice show strongly impaired social interaction as well as nestlet shredding and marble b

Long-term alterations in the maternal behavior of neonatally undernourished rats.

The effect of early food and sensory deprivation on the maternal responsiveness of female rats was investigated. Animals that were neonatally undernourished by daily mother-litter separation (involving both food and sensory deprivation) showed significant deficits in maternal care, consisting of a reduction in nest rating, nursing time, and retrieving responses. Moreover, they exhibited exaggerated grooming and circling movements in comparison with the controls. Dams neonatally undernourished by the nipple-ligation of their mothers (a method that minimizes sensory deprivation) displayed less a

An evaluation of ethological criteria and methods in the assessment of well-being in sows.

The literature on behaviour of sows under different management systems was reviewed to evaluate ethological criteria and methods in the assessment of wellbeing. Daily activity time seems of little value in the assessment of wellbeing when housing systems are compared. It is low in confined sows, especially those that are tethered or otherwise restricted. Lack of exercise, however, has well-documented adverse effects in tethered and restricted sows. A number of well-known responses to conflicts and frustration have been observed in confined sows, but the effect of tethering and restriction vari

Paraganglioma of the posterior mediastinum diagnosed by immunohistochemical staining.

Paraganglioma of the mediastinum are rare neoplasms. To date, no definitive morphologic criteria exist that correlate with the clinical outcome of these tumors. We have encountered a case of paraganglioma in which biological behavior was assessed by immunohistochemical staining to determine whether supplementary postoperative treatment was needed. A 28-year-old man came to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow on a radiogram of the chest. He had no symptoms. Hematological findings were unremarkable. Diagnostic imaging suggested a neurogenic tumor. Surgical resection was performed in Septe

Interactions between the Avian Parasite, Philornis downsi (Diptera: Muscidae) and the Galapagos Flycatcher, Myiarchus magnirostris Gould (Passeriformes: Tyrannidae).

An incidental observation of the fly Philornis downsi parasitizing a Galapagos Flycatcher (Myiarchus magnirostris) nest has revealed new insights into the searching behavior and biology of this invasive fly parasite and its interactions with endemic landbirds in the Galapagos Islands. Observations suggest that P. downsi relies on olfactory cues, or olfactory cues combined with the activity of adult birds, to locate nests and that flies continue to visit nests when chicks are >3 d old. At least 200 eggs were laid by P. downsi in different parts of the nest and >40 early-instar larvae were found

Human ApoE ε4 alters circadian rhythm activity, IL-1β, and GFAP in CRND8 mice.

Disruptions to daily living, inflammation, and astrogliosis are characteristics of Alzheimer's disease. Thus, circadian rhythms, nest construction, IL-1β and TNF-α, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were examined in a mouse model developed to model late-onset Alzheimer's disease-the most common form of the disease. Mice carrying both the mutated human AβPP transgene found in the CRND8 mouse and the human apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (CRND8/E4) were compared with CRND8 mice and wildtype (WT) mice. Circadian rhythms were evaluated by wheel-running behavior. Activity of daily living was me

Effect of ambient temperature on serum prolactin and luteinizing hormone levels during the reproductive life cycle of the female turkey (Meleagris gallopavo).

An ambient temperature of 30 degrees C compared to 18 degrees C accelerated the increase in serum prolactin (Prl) level induced by photostimulation of female turkeys. The contribution of reproductive stage and nesting behavior to this serum Prl elevation was assessed by housing adult female turkeys in individual wire cages while allowing other females free access to nests on the floor. Birds of both groups were exposed to 10 degrees C, 24 degrees C or 30 degrees C beginning 4 wk prior to photostimulation and continuing throughout the reproductive phase. Lapsed time between the onset of photost

Nest-founding paper wasps aggregate in "social leks" and decrease aggression during partner selection.

Many animals live in cooperative social groups. The success of social animals is thought to be influenced by both an animal's own characteristics and by the characteristics of its social partners. As a result, some social animals may devote substantial time and energy to assessing potential partners. Here, we study the process of social group formation in Polistes fuscatus paper wasps. Prior to founding nests, wasps engage in extended social partner sampling where they synchronously "shop" for co-foundresses. We quantify wasp behavior during partner sampling using day censuses and recording ag

Role of communally nesting ardeid birds in the epidemiology of West Nile virus revisited.

Although herons and egrets in the family Ardeidae frequently have been associated with viruses in the Japanese encephalitis virus serocomplex, communal nesting colonies do not appear to be a focus of early season and rapid amplification of West Nile virus (WNV) in California. Evidence for repeated WNV infection was found by testing living and dead nestlings collected under trees with mixed species ardeid colonies nesting above in an oak grove near the University of California arboretum in Davis and in a Eucalyptus grove at a rural farmstead. However, mosquito infection rates at both nesting si

Malignant Esophageal Glomus Tumor With CARMN::NOTCH2 Fusion: An Additional Tumor Underscoring the Frequent Tendency of Esophageal Glomus Tumors for Aggressive Behavior.

Malignant glomus tumors are rare tumors of pericytic origin with a propensity to develop in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Hereby we demonstrate a tumor of a 20-year-old man, who presented with dysphagia and an exophytic esophageal mass. Histologic examination of the resected mass revealed a multinodular tumor in the esophageal wall composed of epithelioid cells showing nesting and monomorphic atypia, staghorn vessels and scanty stroma. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive for SMA, and H-caldesmon, while desmin was negative. Collagen IV and laminin decorated a dense int

Comparing the Effects of Reading Intervention Versus Reading and Mindset Intervention for Upper Elementary Students With Reading Difficulties.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the effects of providing mindset intervention in addition to reading intervention compared with only reading intervention for fourth graders with reading difficulties. Reading intervention was provided daily in 45 min sessions throughout the school year. Mindset intervention occurred in small groups for 24-30 min lessons. Multilevel structural equation modeling (SEM) via n-level SEM was used to account for the latent variable representation of constructs, and the complex nesting and cross-classification structure of the data. Students in the rea

Trait specific modulatory effects of caffeine exposure on compulsive-like behaviors in a spontaneous mouse model of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by recurring intrusive thoughts and repetitive compulsive behaviors, ultimately interfering with their quality of life. The complex heterogeneity of symptom dimensions across OCD patient subgroups impedes diagnosis and treatment. The core and comorbid symptomologies of OCD are thought to be modulated by common environmental exposures such as consumption of the psychostimulant caffeine. The effect of caffeine on the expression of obsessions and compulsions are unexplored. The current study utilized mouse strains (HA) wi

Molecular form identification of anterior pituitary gland-secreted prolactin in chicken.

Endocrine changes during bird reproduction are well documented. Prolactin (PRL) exhibits a strong relationship between incubation and broody behavior. The molecular forms of PRL in the anterior pituitary gland during the reproductive cycle have already been previously identified but not those in the secreted form. To identify the molecular forms of secreted PRL during the reproductive cycle, we thus monitored the physiological status and incubation behavior of 10 Silkie hens by a video recording system over 1-2 years. Nine out of ten mature hens exhibited incubation behavior multiple times dur

Influence of ω3 fatty acids on maternal behavior and brain oxytocin in the murine perinatal period.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal women often experience mood disorders and postpartum depression due to the physical load and the rapid changes in hormone levels caused by pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. When the mother's emotions become unstable, their parental behavior (maternal behavior) may decline, the child's attachment may weaken, and the formation of mother-child bonding can become hindered. As a result, the growth of the child may be adversely affected. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ω3 fatty acid deficiency in the perinatal period on maternal behavior and the

Forebrain implants of estradiol stimulate maternal nest-building in ovariectomized rabbits.

In rabbits, estradiol and progesterone (P) stimulate digging a maternal burrow while P withdrawal promotes straw-carrying. To investigate where such hormones act to regulate those activities, ovariectomized rabbits were implanted with estradiol benzoate (EB; Experiment 1) in the nucleus accumbens (ACC), the principal nucleus of the medial preoptic area or the dorsal hippocampus. Implants were combined with s.c. P injections. In Experiment 2, P (in crystals or dissolved in oil) was implanted in the same regions as in Experiment 1, combined with s.c. injections of EB. Implants of EB into the ACC

Dispersed male networks in western gorillas.

Although kin-selection theory has been widely used to explain the tendency of individuals to bias beneficial behaviors towards relatives living within the same social group, less attention has focused on kin-biased interactions between groups. For animal societies in which females emigrate, as is the case for mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei), encounters between males in different groups often involve aggressive displays that can escalate to physical violence and fatal injuries. However, recent findings on the little-studied western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) indicate that interacti

Cognitive deficits in Tsc1+/- mice in the absence of cerebral lesions and seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is characterized by brain lesions, epilepsy, increased incidence of mental retardation and autism. The causal link between lesion load and epilepsy on cognitive disabilities has been debated, and these factors explain only part of the intelligence quotient variability. A Tsc2 rat model of the disease provided evidence that the TSC genes are directly involved in neuronal function. However, these lesion- and epilepsy-free animals did not show learning deficits, leaving open the possibility that the presence of brain lesions or epilepsy is a prerequisit
